I had a probem streaming video on this site and tried changing many settings and downloading many players and codecs. My poking finally paid off when I found out it was my router the whole time. Turns out that the newest firmware version 1.52.02 for my Linksys wireless router has a bug or something that messes with the streaming video. I just kicked it back a few revisions to version 1.50.14 and my video works perfectly now. I even tried going back to the newest firmware after getting it going and it kills it every time. Hope this helps someone.BowtieII

I need to know how to do that?

Use your router's support site about reverting to previous firmware.

[QUOTE="Jerell_rast"]This solution can also be added to the first post. Apparently, some Firefox users are missing a certain plug-in that prevents them from streaming a video. I found this suggestion here. Hope this has helped:).V4LENT1NE
It works and my firefox now plays WMP here, woot!! Thanks a lot dude.

Your welcome. But after nearly one month, it hasn't been added to the first page:P.

Hello. This thread has helped me before with the WMP not connecting and that worked, now I have another problem. Whenever I try to stream a video through firefox, an error occurs and has to shut down FF. This doesn't happen on other sites that uses WMP and I can get videos to stream on WMP from Gamespot with IE. I have installed the newest version of WMP, installed the plug in from the link, and the 2 other FF plugins. It still crashes when I try to stream with Firefox. Can anyone help?

There's no sound for the Highlights op the Super Paper Mario Marathon. Tried 3 different systems and all have the smae problem, no sound. Other video's do have sound (tried On The Spot and some user vid's). I guess the problem isn't me, but the video ?

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but here goes.

For the last few months, I have had the same "Ready" problem with trying to stream videos. After flipping through the forums in search of an answer, when I found that none of the advice helped, I descided to do my own poking around and I think I have found a solution.

I am using the latest version of firefox and what I found helped was to go into "Tools" and "Options" click on the "Content" tab and under the category File Types, click "Manage". This is where I scrolled down to the AVI extension files and changed the action from "Use Windows Media Player" to "Save to Disk", contrary to what it says, this has actually allowed me to stream the files normally.

I think that I have found a solution to my video streaming problem.

Whenever I restarted my computer and tryed to view video through Gamespot, I would get the dreaded 'ready' message both with IE and Firefox. I was able to temporarily fix this by going into another site and viewing a video through Windows Media Player. However, the problem would return everytime I would restart my computer.

I have found a solution that seems to provide a more permanent fix, which I will describe below:

1) Go to www.abc.net.au. This is an Australian News site.

3) Click on the Video on Demand icon.

4) Click on the ABC News icon.

5) Once the News video commences click on the change player settings, and change the player settings to Real Player, and start watching the video again.

6) Then click on change player settings again and select Windows Media Player and start watching the video again.

After I take these steps, I am able to immediately watch Gamespot Videos even after I restart the computer (using either IE or Firefox).

A couple of times over the past 2 months, the problem has returned. However I have been able to fix it everytime by taking the above steps. I have no idea why this works. I have tried replicating the above steps on other sites, but it didn't work.

I hope this helps someone else.

I was having the same problem with only getting the dreaded "ready" as well. I managed to find a solution to it by simply canceling my gamespot unlimited account. You see by doing that i no longer had to waste money and I just went to other sites. Sorry gamespot but If you dont seem to care about me then I see no reason to care about you. Besides hasn't anyone else noticed that you pay for "HD" video but they still look like garbage when you compare them to the real HD videos on GameTrailers.com which are free? I may change my mind when they finally decide to switch to a flash player. I have no problem watching any of the user created videos. And i have to say that I do like to video reviews. Sorry for my ranting but I'm just fed up at this point. It should not be the end user responsibility to troubleshoot what appears to be a quite popular problem that has a quite simple fix that will make everyone happy. SWITCH TO FLASH PLEASE !

PS I realize this is not very helpful to anyone but I hope it does wake everyone up and realize something needs to be done about this ASAP.

I have to say that I agree with you. Surely these forums must be monitored by someone within gamespot. If so, I think that it is poor form that they don't care enough to even comment on the problem.

I agree that there are other alternatives elsewhere.

I waited almost 13 days for a moderator to reference me to this thread...ugh.

My issue is pretty simple: I can normally watch most videos in stream, but 9/10 times (that's me being optimistic) it'll continuously retry to buffer the stream.  I never had this issue before a couple months ago.  I've tried off several computers, several Internet connections with the same result.

I can download, however, the same high def videos at ~700kb/sec without the annoying pauses and blips of lag during re-buffering process.  Again, this is a recent problem as seems to be the case.

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25554888&msg_id=287503452#287503452

This link is my thread discussing the issue(s) I've been having if anyone can offer any advice.

Thanks

No official answer or reason = no surprise.  I guess I'll cancel my paid subscription and keep IGN's since I don't have any issues with them.

Truly sad.

EDIT: Done.  It was fun while it lasted.

All I can recommend is you to install a third-party sound codec.

Yea, my problem is annoying too. I had to reformat my computer and watching videos worked before. Now whenever i try to watch a movie on GS it just says connecting to media. Then my computer slows down huge and it takes me about 10 mins to close the window. I think it might be WMP but i reinstalled it and it still doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I've just started encountering this problem. No streaming video just "buffering...ready" with a black screen.

Media player 11, divX, k-lite all installed.

No idea how to fix this but if I there isn't a resolution posted soon I'm gonna cancel my subscription as well... aboslutely infuriating.

What's more it seems that the video frame embedded in the web page streams video fine. (e.g. http://www.gamespot.com/videos/index.html?tag=nav-top;videos&navclk=videos).

However the "Gamespot Video Player" that is used to stream videos doesn't play anything.

The viedo loads up and then stops I tryed everything you said, and it still stops for some reason. I tryed pressing play, but it still goes back to connecting , then stop.

Error message, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

My problem that I cannot figure out for the life of me.. is that every time I load a video hosted by gamespot ( the ones that bring up the window, FE: when you click to watch a review ) the video loads, it starts playing. Great! But then I get a Don't Send error every single time, no matter what. ANY IDEAS, please?

I use Firefox / Windows XP

My apologies that you are experiencing all these problems.  With elusive problems, your router may be the culprit.  Please rollback to an earlier verson to see if that fixes the problem.

FYI, the new Flash video player will be released in about two weeks!!!!

I have tried all of the workarounds for streaming video and none of them are working.

I get to see AND hear all the advertisements - BUT I still cannot get any audio for the featured stream. This is seriously making me angry. I spend alot of time here looking, reading and researching.  It is very frustrating not being able to hear the streaming videos, especialy the exclusive developer interviews, previews, etc..

Please please figure this out soon. I dont want to go to IGN.com.

I finally solved the problem! I do not know what the cause was, but I uninstalled XP :( and it works. My thoughts as to why is:

1.) I reinstalled my sound card software. I believe this my be the culprit, because "Say the Time" did not say the time and now it does.

2.) Gamespot in my previous install just open a tabbed window not a popup and I think the popup is need. I will test this theory when I run Firefox to night.

PS To Web staff can you add XP,Gamespot and Firefox to the dictionary

Same problem with gamespot programs when watching not live. you see a couple of seconds and then it loads and so on. The old program you had did not have these problems? My connections are good 1M/512 and I use internet explorer. So please fix your player. It was awesome to see E3 live after dreaming to get there so many years. Thanks !!!

Ok iv checked a serveral of them but it seems that none of the WMV videos will stream in 700k All i get is a small little video that looks like 100k or somthing. yep im a paid subscriber and i am using WMP 11. Also firefox borser. 760mb of ram. with a 1.5mbs dsl internet connection. I dont really no what to do. It is not just this site oh. All WMV on any site streams in a small video.

Same here. E3 Live works in 700 through the Event Player, but trying to watch MS press conference and it's stuck on 300K. 56K, 100 and 700 settings have no effect.

Somehow the live videos started working again and I never did anything but try occasionally to see if it worked. Can't explain it, sometimes it will play, sometimes it won't. Unfortunately I missed all the live press conferences.

When I attempt to stream live video here, it comes up, says "connecting to media" then "ready." I've tried everything, I used Firefox, and IE, both have the same problem. I click on "error details" after right clicking on the WMP interface and it says:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:").

Has anyone had this same/similar problem?
