.:: F1PU Predictions Championship 2011 ::.

It's back, and it's bigger than ever!

Welcome to the Predictions Championship, F1PU's seasonal game which enters its sixth year. The game originally started out as the Vision Championship in 2006, but in 2008 became the Predictions Championship - a more in-depth version of the original game, allowing for more creativity and a much larger points tally.

Last year was a eventful season, seeing numerous race winners but one thing remained - eventual champion wombat26 took the lead of the championship at the Spanish GP and never looked back after - but only just took the crown after being pushed and pushed to the very end by KimisApprentice, whose comeback efforts ended up with him falling short by only two and a half points.

The win put wombat26 in to the Hall of Fame alongside Redders1989, bloodling, mjk1 & Aloushi87, and now it's time to find out who will join them for 2011 - or will we finally have our first double champion?

The points system for 2011 has now changed, so make sure you take a good look and get ready - the season is almost upon us!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is how the game is played:

For each GP:
- Each person selects 4 teams, each ranked 1-12 and the total must come to a MINIMUM of 27. Ranking is as follows:
1 - Red Bull
2 - McLaren
3 - Ferrari
4 - Mercedes
5 - Lotus Renault
6 - Williams
7 - Force India
8 - Sauber
9 - Scuderia Toro Rosso
10 - Team Lotus
11 - Hispania Racing Team
12 - Marussia Virgin Racing

- Of those 4 teams, the player chooses one driver from each to score their points for them in the race (I.E. Toro Rosso, Team Lotus, Hispania & Virgin Racing, and the player chooses Alguersuari, Kovalainen, Karthikeyan and D'Ambrosio). Points will be discussed later on.

- Extra points are available for correctly predicting who will have the fastest lap time in practice, the GP and who will hold pole. There are also points for who will be on the podium too. Every driver is available for selection, not just the drivers chosen earlier.

- Players may also select the Best constructor (the team with the best result in the weekend) and the Worst Constructor (the worst overall result).

POINTS

- For each constructor chosen (so both drivers from the 4 teams chosen), points are scored as follows:
1st: +25
2nd: +18
3rd: +15
4th: +12
5th: +10
6th: +8
7th: +6
8th: +4
9th: +2
10th: +1
All other cars running at finishing flag: +0.5
Cars not running at finishing flag: -10
Cars failing to qualify: -15

Front row starting position on the grid: +5

- For the 4 drivers chosen, points score as follows:
1st: +25
2nd: +18
3rd: +15
4th: +12
5th: +10
6th: +8
7th: +6
8th: +4
9th: +2
10th: +1

All other cars running at finishing flag: +0.5

- For the 4 drivers chosen, for each position they move up the grid, they score an extra 3 points. E.G. a driver starts 18th and finishes 16th, the driver scores 6 points. No points are lost if they go backwards.

- The last load of points are scored as follows:
Correct Driver for fastest Practice lap: +3 pts
Pole Position: +3 pts.
Fastest race lap: +3 pts.
Podium finish: +3 pts.
OR
Correctly predicted podium place: +5 pts.
If all three in correct predicted places: +5 pts. extra (making 20 in total)
Best Constructor: +5 pts.
Worst Constructor: +5 pts.

Predictions should be made in the way as the example post below:

EXAMPLE POST
TEAMS: Toro Rosso, Team Lotus, HRT, Virgin
DRIVERS: Alguersuari, Kovalainen, Karthikeyan, D'Ambrosio
FASTEST PRACTICE LAP: di Resta
POLE POSITION: Maldonado
PODIUM: Sutil, Trulli, Glock
FASTEST RACE LAP: Kobayashi
BEST CONSTRUCTOR: HRT
WORST CONSTRUCTOR: Red Bull

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall scores can be found in the post below. Results from each race will be posted here as scores are calculated as well.

AUSTRALIAN GP RESULTS

  1. mavediss (129 pts.)
  2. tony205 (91 pts.)
  3. bloodling (89.5 pts.)
  4. Rayrota (89.5 pts.)
  5. nravasi (87.5 pts.)
  6. Avenger1324 (86 pts.)
  7. SadPSPAddict (76 pts.)
  8. KimisApprentice (61 pts.)
  9. Zeller-- (57.5 pts.)
  10. Redders1989 (57 pts.)
  11. Garfield360UK (40.5 pts.)
  12. wombat26 (34 pts.)
  13. XSamFisherX (20.5 pts.)
  14. SadPS3Addict (5.5 pts.)
  15. Bigcol1611 (-17.5 pts.)
  16. Racky_rules (-33 pts.)

The new points system certainly has shaken things up. mavediss takes the first win of 2011 with a pretty big win from tony205. In a not so good day for the challengers last year, champion wombat26 can only take 12th, whilst KimisApprentice finishes 8th.

mavediss has a 38 point lead.

mavediss still tops the leaderboard, but is joint leader with the race-winning Rayrota. tony205 drops one place whilst Redders1989 climbs a stonking six places up the board! Defending champion wombat26 gets himself in to the top 10, and poor Racky_rules is still in negatvie points!

  12. Zeller-- (43 pts.)
  13. Racky_rules (40 pts.)

Sorry it's late folks, it's exam time again.

A race dominated by Sad Addicts! SadPS3Addict takes the top step of the podium, and SadPSPAddict - completely unrelated, of course - takes second, followed behind by Rayrota just one point further back. Unlucky days too for tony205, wombat26 and mavediss, who all narrowly missed out on the perfect podium call with Hamilton's pass on Vettel right near the end of the race. Poor, poor Racky_rules, once again, comes last.

These results mean Rayrota is now the stand-alone leader of the championship race, 29.5 points clear of mavediss. SadPSPAddict moves up three places to 4th, whilst SadPS3Addict moves up five places to 10th. In good news for Racky_rules, he's finally in the positive points!

I bet you are secretly cursing that guy (or girl), dam them for taking your top spot? Am I right? ;)

Also, Redders, catching you up now :P -should I be worried that you will somehow block me on the next one like if the lights went out but you "forgot" to go at the start of the race?

TURKISH GP RESULTS

  1. Garfield360UK (132 pts.)
  2. mavediss (132 pts.)
  3. Rayrota (121 pts.)
  4. wombat26 (119.5 pts.)
  5. Racky_rules (95.5 pts.)
  6. XSamFisherX (93.5 pts.)
  7. SadPSPAddict (92 pts.)
  8. Avenger1324 (88 pts.)
  9. Redders1989 (85.5 pts.)
  10. SadPS3Addict (79 pts.)
  11. tony205 (74.5 pts.)
  12. Bigcol1611 (68.5 pts.)

Huzzah! About time these came along!

It's a joint win for Garfield360UK and mavediss, with only a British driver in their 2nd place on the podium (both of which were wrong) being the difference between the two! However of worthy note, credit goes to SadPS3Addict who becomes the first person since 69ANT69 in Bahrain last year to correctly guess all three podium positions correctly, joining only an elite few to have accomplished this!

In the race for the crown, mavediss now sits only 19 points behind championship leader Rayrota, whilst Garfield360UK and wombat26 both climb two places up to 5th and 7th respectively. In good news for Racky_rules, he not only doesn't finish last, but he also gets himself off the foot of the championship table!

SPANISH GP RESULTS

  1. mavediss (158.5 pts.)
  2. Rayrota (155.5 pts.)
  3. wombat26 (155.5 pts.)
  4. Garfield360UK (152.5 pts.)
  5. SadPSPAddict (147 pts.)
  6. Redders1989 (144.5 pts.)
  7. tony205 (93 pts.)
  8. Avenger1324 (85 pts.)
  9. Bigcol1611 (85 pts.)
  10. SadPS3Addict (84 pts.)
  11. XSamFisherX (77.5 pts.)
  12. 69ANT69 (72.5 pts.)
  13. Racky_rules (52.5 pts.)

It's like the end of the 2010 season - except it's started really early this time!

mavediss takes win number three of the season, ahead of Rayrota and defending champion wombat26. It truly was a race helped by picking Vettel and Heidfeld together.

Rayrota's lead, just like wombat26's last year, is slowly being eaten at by the second place guy - this time mavediss - and is now only 16 points. Behind that though, it's a mega scramble for third - with current third place SadPSPAddict already 90.5 points behind mavediss after just five races - it's going to be a tough one, folks. tony205, despite scoring well, takes an almighty tumble and drops 4 places from 3rd to 7th!

MONACO GP RESULTS

  1. Bigcol1611 (131 pts.)
  2. tony205 (130 pts.)
  3. Avenger1324 (118 pts.)
  4. Garfield360UK (109.5 pts.)

  11. Racky_rules (64 pts.)
  12. XSamFisherX (57 pts.)
  13. 69ANT69 (55 pts.)

Bigcol1611 blindsights everybody and steals the win away from tony205 by just a single point! Life can be cruel sometimes...

It's more bites out of the lead for mavediss - now just 11.5 points behind leader Rayrota - how will he respond? 93.5 points behind mavediss is an epic battle for third - five people all within 31.5 points of each other! The chop-and-change section now sees Garfield360UK heading the way, ahead of SadPSPAddict who drops a place, tony205 who climbs two, and then wombat26 and Redders1989 who both drop a place. 69ANT69 gets himself off the foot of the table and up in to 14th place.

Apologies, once again. Just when you're free of Uni and you think you're free to rest, along come more jobs to do...

...however, I can say they'll be done within the next 24 hours. Basically because I'm heading out and plan to do it once I get back in a few hours. If I don't fall alseep first.

Thats cool man, its no rush I just wandered if you had an ETA on them.

I mean its appriciated all the work you do around here, I stay around basically due to the content here (I have had a union cull and F1 was one of the ones I feel like I want to stick around at as long as its possible).

Patience, Garfield. There is plenty of time for Redders to post our rubbish results.

Not that I'm moaning ( well a little I guess ) but it is taking some of the fun away not seeing the results after each race - equally seeing the result can influence the next pick. I feel justified in saying something since I offered to temporarily take over the "number crunching" some weeks/months ago to which I didn't even get a polite "no thank you" - I was just ignored!!!!

If this is the case, then I offer my genuine apologies as I must have missed it, or it was during a busy period for me. I honestly do really need a new number cruncher, it is quite time consuming (and sadly a friend who attempted making a spreadsheet was unsuccessful due to its complexity). Forgoing yet more unforseen circumstances (I'd like to avoid having to give more witness statements to the police...), I do - somewhat - finally have the time to get round to it.

Your points are all valid, and again, I do apologise for how long this has been taking this year. Long gone are the days where I could calculate immediately after the race...

I could attempt to make a rudimentary spreadsheet that should calculate the scores for teams and drivers (not overtakes because I don't know how you like to calculate that) based on starting and finishing position. It would take a while but I think could be do-able given I had enough time and motivation.

Okay - a spreadsheet has been made, I'll just do a quick test with one of my predictions that are yet to be calculated and then 1 that has been calculated and see how well it works

The spreadsheet is working - to an extent - can you explain to me this bit here Redders?

- The last load of points are scored as follows:
Correct Driver for fastest Practice lap: +3 pts
Pole Position: +3 pts.
Fastest race lap: +3 pts.
Podium finish: +3 pts.
OR
Correctly predicted podium place: +5 pts.
If all three in correct predicted places: +5 pts. extra (making 20 in total)
Best Constructor: +5 pts.
Worst Constructor: +5 pts.

Most especially the OR bit. Do they get one or the other or both and how do you prefer to calculate them? I ask because after completing what I've got I'm missing 30 points from Bigcols score for Monaco - that said I've not added these last few bonus points because I'm not 100% sure how you score them.

The podium positions - say if the positions were VET, WEB, ALO:

The player picks:

HAM, BUT, VET (VET in wrong podium place): 3 pts.
VET, HAM, BUT (VET in correct podium place): 5 pts.
BUT, VET, WEB (VET & WEB in wrong podium place): 6 pts.
VET, HAM, WEB (VET in correct podium place, WEB in wrong): 8 pts.
VET, WEB, BUT (VET & WEB in correct podium place): 10 pts.
VET, ALO, WEB (VET in correct podium place, ALO & WEB in wrong): 11 pts.
VET, WEB, ALO (All three in correct podium place): 20 pts. (15 as it's 5 per driver, plus an extra 5 bonus for having all three correct).

With regards to points for teams and chosen drivers, does the chosen driver effectively score twice for you?

POINTS

- For each constructor chosen (so both drivers from the 4 teams chosen), points are scored as follows:
- For the 4 drivers chosen, points score as follows:RULES

So as an example if Vettel wins and Webber finishes 5th:

Red Bull choice scores you 35 (25 + 10 )

Choosing Vettel would give you 60 (35 + 25)

Choosing Webber would give you 45 (35 + 10)

Other factors such as places gained would only be for your chosen driver, and not part of the team score, but podium points appear to score twice - is that right?

I also made a start on trying to put this into a spreadsheet that takes away much of the manual calculation, but it's trying to get all the little extras in that makes it more complicated - as I'm sure you know :)

Another clarification:

Points gained from finishing higher than the start grid

does this apply to those that fail to finish?  So Liuzzi starts 24th, and is the 4th retirement from the race, so officially ends up with 21st position.  Do we award him 0 gain, or 9 points for the 3 places he finished higher?

For what I'm working on I've assumed he scores no points from the gain as he failed to finish.

What programs do you have installed to run / view any spreadsheets?

I'm using Excel 2007, so have the option of saving as .xlsx (2007 / 2010 mode) or as .xls (2003 and earlier).  I'll assume .xls as that is atleast viewable by all versions of Excel, and hopefully other freebie options such as Open Office.

I'm not using any Macros, so those shouldn't be an issue. Limited Conditional formatting, so again that shouldn't be much of an issue.

Cheers for clearing that up, I guess it would be down to the bean counter at the end to make a judgement on those podium points.

Okay I think I have a working spreadsheet that should do most of the calculations.

I've uploaded it to sendspace -  http://www.sendspace.com/file/7jug6r

The file is only 64KB and I've set the description to F1PU stats v1.0

If you want it hosted somewhere else, or want it emailed, PM your details and I will send it.

I have written notes on how to use it on the Notes tab, but if you have any questions let me know and I will try to answer them.

It's setup to allow you to copy and paste the results from the BBC website into the table. Then you only need to update drivers that DNF or DNQ. The penalties for those will be applied. 0.5 points for finishing is in. Bonus for front row qualifying is in. Bonus points for gaining places from the start is in. Fastest Practice, Pole Position, Fastest Race lap, Best / Worst Constructor need to be set once per race and will then transfer points across all player stats.

Player stats need to be entered, and I have included a validation to ensure team selection is 27 points or more.

Crucially for Redders - please test this against your manual calculations in case I have done something in the logic that is different to how you are working things out.

Download it, have a look, and let me know what you think - any input is welcome. Hopefully this will make calculating the stats faster and less painful :)

That is a mighty impressive spreadsheet Avenger, far less labour intensive than mine. Is there any way that it can be hosted on google docs or something similar and a group of us could fill it in. Even if the scores didn't work out quite right I think there shouldn't be any arguments when I say it's all relative - all the formula are the same for everyone so no one would gain an unfair advantage. That was the issue when putting together my own, due to misunderstanding of the scoring plus limitations of excel and my skills lead to a score 9 points different yet that effect may well effect everyone the same.

Well, anyway I'm rambling, what I'm getting is at is can it be shared amongst a small team who are responsible for inputing the data and posting the scores.
