Title says it. What do you keep seeing again and again in games? It's not too hard to figure out.
I'll start with one:
When you're about to have a big enemy endeavor, the door that you enter through closes and locks. Seen mostly in stuff like Zelda.

Texted cutscenes. I've sat through much, much texted dialogue, even with recent stuff (Super Paper Mario makes me really appreciate voice acting).

speaking of voice acting, it reminded me of another.
soap opera acting conversations in WRPGs. (you know, just look at each other and have the most boring conversation you can think of)
I can go on and on but then I would get suspended for taking up too much space on these threads. :P J/K
But the biggest thing I absolutely despise about certain niche JRPGs are cat girl characters. I hate them! I loathe them! I hate them so much that I don't even buy the game if there's a cat girl! Brave Story Traveller is one example. Another is Shining Tears. There's one in Stella Deus. And another. And another....AAAAARGH!!!! Enough already!
Damn I hate it when they meow everytime they talk. Makes me want to break the game disc.

?????????????????????????????
How could you? How can you "like" cat-girls? :P
Seriously, I hate them. They're just really annoying and they kill the story. They seem so out of place.

They are awesome.
They give that extra perk to personalities of characters with odd stuffs they do.
Also they are so exotic.
There was actually a thread like this in the PC forum recently...anyway...here is what I think.......
- The theme of the lone futuristic soldier/mercenary/fighter who is able to single-handedly take on an entire army of aliens/demons/cyborgs when all of Earth's armies and technology has failed.
- Along the way futuristic soldier mentioned above will aquire a pistol, a machine gun, a shotgun, an energy weapon, grenades, a sniper rifle, and a finally rocket launcher right when the going gets real tough.....in that exact order.
- Western RPGs usually only taking place in a Tolkien-esque fantasy setting....there are so many other great settings that would be perfect for RPGs that are either underused or never used.
- Women in videogames having the body dimensions that would shock a pornstar, and even though all hell is breaking loose around them rather then wear some logical protective gear they wear the skimpiest most revealing outfit possible.
-Enemies (aliens, foreign terrorists, demons) who speak english...to each other...in very bad accents....when they logically shouldn't be.
- You're this super hero that can take on anything, can survive a ton of damage, and have the best items and weapons known to man in your possession.....yet your path is blocked by a crate or some other mundane object any 5-year-old could climb over.
- Also, for all your advanced weaponry or spells, a simple locked wooden door is impenetrable.
- The "Evil Awoken" theme.....ie....in the process of searching some ancient location (it's always someplace ancient) for some ancient artifact / advanced weapon / advanced technology, etc....you (or someone else) managed to unleash some evil force....and now only you can single-handedly stop it.
- Exploding barrels, and groups of enemies who will gladly stand next to them in a firefight.
- People will gladly leave gold/money/credit/weapons/healing items in random barrels on the street for any stranger to find.
- Your best friend / ally / sidekick turns against you and in the second to last boss you fight in the game.
hmm....
-Fight who's supposedly the last boss only to find that there's one more boss after defeating him.
-In regards to the above point, the second to the last boss ends up being easier than the earlier ones.
-There's always cheesy english voice acting when a Japanese title is brought to America.
-First person shooters having melee attacks that are stronger and more useful than the actual guns.
-No matter what, if it's based on a movie it'll likely turn out bad using the popularity of the movies for a poor excuse for sales.
-Guns that overheat
-The meaning of "realistic" only seems to mean "2 shots and you're dead" and "these guns exist in real life". Everything else is fictional on a different level.
-Everyone wants to be sniper.
-Overpowering sniper rifles.
-Super evil bad guy that wears a dark robe.
-They always make the magic look WAY better than weapons.
-The hero has no idea what's going on, yet he saves the world.
-At some point, you lose contact with everyone else.
-The typical group of enemies consist of weak enemies, slightly better and more equipped enemies, big badass enemies, and then a super badass enemy once in a while. And once you reach a certain point, you'll see more of what was then harder to defeat.
sorry if named before
-crates are everywhere, in the middle of the street, on someones yard, etc
-All doors are locked, except for the one you're supposed to go into
-Old men are the best people to ask for information
-A princess is kidnapped
-One person in a supersuit can take on a whole army with minimal assistance
-A rocket launcher next to you when a hostile helicopter comes, how convenient
-Zombies are slow

LOL the cat girl in brave story was originally a fat chick because they didn't wanna make her with skimpy cloths in the movie!
The most annoying cliche I can think of is having a cool almost cold character as a hero or an emo like they say because I hate characters like that. I can't connect with them.
- you can enter in any house, and even if it has 5 people in it, you can examine every thing in the house and they wont even care...
- people standing next to a save point saying "you can save at this save point", even though they arent suposed to know it exists
- you can take loads of damage for 1 hour or more and still wont die...
- you can be a mage who can destroy the entire planet and still you cant open a damn wooden door...
- you can be the most badass person in the world, and still you'll need the help of a small kid to climb to the roof of a building...
- the world is gonna end, everyone is gonna die, and pizza will be gone, yet you can take your time playing card games...

Aren't all these in RE4? :P and it's selling like crazy that they're making a phone version now?
Here's one:
You walk in a room. What you're looking for is right in front of you. You walk up to it and-
Oh no, you have to fight someone.
Generic badass saving the world from aliens. COUGH HALO3 GEARS OF WAR not that there's anything wrong with that.NaiKoN9293Yes, I agree with that. Same thing aplies to Crysis, Resistence, and to a certain extent Metroid, but there is nothing wrong with them, they are just generic, but still fun.
How about the RPG story starring a youth with amnesia that eventually is given the task, with the help of their childhood friend/love interest/pet/magical weapon to eventually save the world.
When a game tries to advertise "choice" to you and you're only give polar opposite decisions: The unbelievably good or the diabolical evil choice.
Western Games - A bald middle aged strong Rambo who has every weapon at his disposle to kill all, he's so strong that he can literally jump out in the middle of open-fire and kill all the enemies while he won't die!
Japanese Games - Some average teenager with striaght hair that almost covers his eyes, who is the master of a sword even though he usually uses the same attack over and over!
All Regions - A female who is pretty always has really big boobs and wears skimpy outfits!
threethings that really piss me off
1 RPGs where you and your enemy hit each other 51682 times with swords and neither of you die
2 stories where you start off with a perfect life then some evil force comes and kills your hometown and you start off on a quest
3 one seemingly average guy picks up a sword and all of a sudden he can kill ancient evils
How about when you have to walk through a door but right before you get there it slams shut and you have to spendan hour or so going around.
I hate when there is a sign that says something like "Do not dig here" or "Fishing is prohibited" and it really means that you are supposed to dig or fish. It's so annoying.Ellimist314
Yeah, that's really bad. It's even worse in Nintendo games where it'll even embolden the key part of the phrase, like 'Maybe we should fish here?'
WRPG: Hello, I'm the strong and intelligent female lead who slowly falls in love with the main character yet continues to deny it untill the end of the game where I proclaim my love right before the final boss at which point I either die dramatically or turn out to have been a traitor all along.
JRPG: Liek, tehee, I'm the cutesy female lead who's like totally random and adorable lol! I serve little to no purpose plot wise and do very little other than say catchy one-liners and wear next to no clothing, and if I am wearing clothing, it's strange beyond all belief and serves no practical purpose other than to be sooOOooo adorable!
Doesn't apply to em all of course, but they're common enough stereotypes that annoy me greatly whenever I see em in games.

Though RE4 is a victim of many of the cliches I mentioned, at the same time RE4 is one of the few games that went against many of the other cliched trends I mentioned.
In RE4 the protagonist is in an isolated situation.....he's alone and fighting almost by himself in a situation few in the outside world are even aware of.
Another biggie...in RE4, the enemies actually speak in the native tongue of where the game takes place.
The women in RE4 arent of unrealistic proportions....and there is a reason Ashley is wearing a school outfit in the game...she was kidnapped from school.
As for weapons....even though in RE4 you do get your standard pistol, shotgun, machine gun, etc....what made RE4 stand out above many other shooters is the ability to upgrade each weapon, so that even earlier weapons, like a pistol, could become more powerful with enough upgrades then a later weapon like an machine gun.

Well I made a blog about it :P too late!
Go check to see the point. And Ada doesn't have ridiculous propotions? A pink dress?
Most of these come from RPGs, but a few of them probably apply to other games as well:
- Monsters/enemies you encounter are almost always slightly more powerful than the one's before, but never get too powerful that you can't defeat them, thus letting you know where you're "supposed" to be in a game based on the relative difficulty of the enemies.
- Weapons, armor, and items also seem to progress on this linear scale...you can also generally tell which equipment is better based on the cost.
- Gaining new skills/powers simply by beating up random enemies...I fail to see how I learned Fire 2 by physically attacking hordes upon hordes of imps and goblins.
- Having equipment/weapons/armor make more of a difference in how well you do than your own personal abilities/skill.
- Likable, heroic protagonists.
- The main hero of the story must accomplish something that "cannot be done" or "has never been done before"
- The hero of the story survives in the end.
- Characters with "secret identities" (especially royalty who somehow can masquerade as normal people for half of your journey without anyone noticing that they're the missing prince/princess/king/etc)
- Characters starting out with sideplots and then having those sideplots slowly dwindle as the game focuses more and more on just the main storyline.
 this thread is great
all the ones i was gonna post ive allready seen posted, but one other still came to mind
ALL RPGS-
at some point in the story you will be captured/arrested and thrown in a dungeon/jail, at which point you managed to escape and if your weapons/itemswerent left on you even tho your imprisoned, youll be able to walk down the hall and retrieve them all
