I'll be borrowing these two from friends because they keep bugging me about them, but I must say that I have rather low expectations for both. We'll see though. Perhaps these low expectations will pay off and I'll be pleasently sruprised.
Good question, considering that so far this year these were the two most hyped games (soon to be outdone by GTAV and Watch Dogs).
Both games were equally as good, but not quite as good as they are hyped.
Infinite no doubt was magnificient with its unique, creative visuals. But when it came to the actual gameplay, it became too familiar. . . just another Bioshock game.
Last of Us no doubt had engaging storytelling. But it also became overly familiar (oddly the story was similar to Bioshock Infinite in some ways; "man reluctantly escorts mysterious girl through ravaged cities."). Gameplay weighed a bit too much on scripted events that led to trial error for my tastes. As for "man escorts girl through zombie land" games are concerned, I still liked Telltale's The Walking Dead better, albeit by a small margin.Â

Why do people feel the need to compare every single popular game, they're totally different
Qixote
I've dug about as deep as I wish to, and it's a silly comparison.
They aren't even the same genre, not even close to a similar setting, not even close to a similar combat/gameplay structure, different relationships between the characters...but oh, they both have a male protagonist with a female companion, they're the same!
Bioshock wins it for me, though It's for entirely personal reasons. Though neither of them "win" me over as a video game. Don't get me wrong I praised Bioshock and TLOU, but the one glaring flaw both games have is that neither offers much innovation in terms of being an actual video game. Yes the gameplay in both games are polished, balanced, refined, and any other journalistic buzz word you can think of to use as a positive spin, but It's nothing that hasn't been done before.
Both of these games primary praises came from their story and production. Which is fine, I can enjoy many different kinds of games for many different reasons. However, making a game feel like an interactive movie doesn't make it a better game, it just makes it more like a movie.

They're both big-budget games praised for their stories and worlds. That's why they're being compared.
WHAT ! :| Bioshock Infinite was far from Balanced ! I've only played infinite, but last of us seems a little better. Infinite mainly benefits from its themes and atmosphere, but in the end, it felt like an incomplete game. The ending felt too rushed, I would have probably prefered it to be delayed again. I feel like a jerk for expecting a game to be perfect, but I just had high expectations for infinite. I still had lots of fun, but I felt craving more.
Infinite is a lot better. The setting actually feels like it involves creativity and is just begging to be explored. There's something strangely magical about the art style, kind of like the old Hollywood movie magic, where it has a great mix between reality and fantasy, which is very welcome in an era of games that focus so hard on being super realistic.
I love the sci-fi story of Infinite, and being able to care about the characters makes it a lot better than the same old zombie story of The Last of Us. Overall I find myself coming back to Infinite for another playthrough and find it difficult to play The Last of Us over again.
Note, I don't hate The Last of Us, but considering it took about halfway through for it to get fun I kind of got bored with it at times and wondered why I preordered and got it day 1.
I'm going with Infinite. Both games emphasise telling a story and wowing the player with visuals over having remotely good gameplay, but Infinite is more of just a really boring, repetitive slog that's pretty straightforward and easy. The Last of Us is a boring, repetitive slog that's also a tedious trial and error disaster.

Thank you.
I got too bored with Bioshock infinite to finish it, whereas I'm on a second run through TLoU.Â
Since I didn't beat Bioshock, I can't speak to its quality overall, but the storytelling between the two games is night and day. Bioshock Infinite feels the need to bludgeon the player over the head with all its narrative threads, while TLoU introduces them and lets the player decide how to react to them. Bioshock's story was just too heavy-handed and preachy for me to really give a shit after the initial wow wore off from seeing how amazing Columbia looked. After looking through my twentieth rotoscope player or whatever they are, I was like, "Okay, the guy that founded Columbia is a religious wackjob I GET IT." The game sort of parades that around like some kind of medal that I felt was supposed to interest me but I didn't give a shit. It just seemed to think its story was much, much better than it was, to be honest.Â
Moreover, while Bioshock Infinite's gunplay felt fine to me, it didn't have as much of a visceral feel as TloU. Also, one need only play Uncharted 3 again after playing TloU to see how much Naughty Dog worked on the mechanics. Uncharted 3's gunplay is almost unplayable to me after playing TLoU. Perhaps it is a case of managed expectations in this regard, but since I went into TLoU expecting shitty gunplay, I was pleasantly surprised to see how wonderful the game's combat felt.Â

Not true, actually. I find it the pinnacle of third-person shooting controls and gameplay.[QUOTE="Pffrbt"][QUOTE="Shame-usBlackley"]since I went into TLoU expecting shitty gunplay, I was pleasantly surprised to see how wonderful the game's combat felt.Â

Vanquish does it better because it's actually fun and engaging to play. RE4, 5, and even 6 are more enjoyable to play than The Last of Us.
You can't really compare the two outside of "GotY"...which, out of the two, would go to Last of Us.Â

Well, RE4 is the best game ever made, so I can agree there, but Vanquish is pretty bad. The Last of Us is only trial and error if you make it so. You must use stealth to your advantage, and save materials for the right time.Well, RE4 is the best game ever made, so I can agree there, but Vanquish is pretty bad.
Vanquish isn't remotely bad. It's one of the few cover shooters that's actually fun, mainly because you only have to sit behind cover less than 5% of the time and the controls are razer sharp. It's a really fantastic game that we need more of.

Man. I'm a sucker for horror games, so I have to say TLOU. Although if you guys notice- what did both games have? F*CKING INCREDIBLE INTROS.
Bioshock in that church... where that take on Amazing Grace is playing? How gorgeous. And Im pretty sure The Last of Us broke everyone's heart.Â
Â
But both games had problems. TLOU became a pumpfest. Bioshock ran out of combat tricks fast. I'm also not huge into sci-fi, overblown storytelling. So Bioshock kind of turned me off.
Â
TLOU was completely miserable. In the best way possible.Â
It wasn't "Amazing Grace" didn't you preorder the Game to get the Soundtrack ?Man. I'm a sucker for horror games, so I have to say TLOU. Although if you guys notice- what did both games have? F*CKING INCREDIBLE INTROS.

Read more carefully man. Its a TAKE on amazing grace. Absolutely. The lyrics are different. The melody is way too close for it not to be. That scene is so gorgeous.

I thought it was Amazing Grace too. But the melody, although different, still sounded more like its original song than Amazing Grace.I don't get why practically everyone thinks thst The Last of Us is that good. I just don't get it.
It is a good game just not great, as it interesting and boring at the same time. As for BioShock Infinite it isn't better or worse, but it is more my type of game since I like action in my games. I made a topic about Rapture or Columbia, and most people including myself chosen Rapture. So Infinite isn't better than the first BioShock game.
