Apologies if this is stretching the topic of general games discussion.

My question is: If you count yourself as a hardcore gamer would you tell a girl (that u are dating) that you do play alot of games and she will have to deal with it. Or do you wait till after you have got her and let her find out by herself (which she will probs get pretty mad at). Also do you think the type of game would matter to them? For example an MMO over FPS (due to the escaping to another reality argument on MMOs)?

P.S I've already been through this situation so I'm not looking for advice :P

Of course. It's one of my hobbies... I am sure whomever I was dating would like to know what my hobbies are and hopefully, want to play them with me.

Absolutley not. Telling a cute girl you are a hardcore nerd and spend your leisure time leveling up and fighting dragons is about the equivalent to telling her you got an STD.

Actually, I believe an STD would get you more positive reactions.

I do not have a girlfriend. That is likely a result of being a gamer.

Absolutely. If they have that much of a problem with it early on you know it'll become a huge point of contention in the future and they aren't worth the time.

Maybe she's dam hot!

I don't think you should tell them. Not at the very begining at least :S

Its like you wouldn't go and tell them all the other annoying things you might do like trimming pubes with a kitchen knife. You let them find out through experience.

Uh...yeah? It's 2008, if she doesn't like games, then it's because SHE is a loser, not me. Considering women watch Sex and the City and collect teddy bears, they can't say jack **** about anything men do. And people might want to reconsider the idea of just pretending they don't like something, if you intend to have a relationship longer than one day. Sticking true to who you are is infinitely more attractive to women than blindly changing everything about yourself to gain her approval.

I see no reason to volunteer the information unless it somehow comes up on a conversation. These days since video games are becoming more casual it's probably not as big of a deal as it was when I was in high school, but back then and to some extent still today, some girls will stereotype you based on this. I find it better to let them get to know you first.

That being said, I certainly wouldn't deny it either if I was asked. But like my other hobbies, I don't feel like it's necessary to just tell a girl that I play video games. There's a lot about me that I don't necessarily volunteer until I've gotten to know someone.

Gaming doesn't define me as a person. It's just a hobby, and it's best to keep it that way.

My sentiments exactly. Some people don't "get" gaming and thats fine by me, aslong as they realise that I'm more than that. That being said, I know many girls who love playing video games. Its a form of escapism and relaxing, everyone has their own ways, this is mine.

An STD at least proves you are capable of some kind of physical contact :P

I think introducing/defining yourself to people by telling them about your hobbies is stupid to begin with so no, I don't talk about the fact I am a gamer with girls. However I will gladly talk about games if they happen to enter the conversation. I don't consider games any different from movies or music or books; if you both know the work in question you'll probably enjoy discussing it while talking about something only one of you know about is just stupid.

Most teenagers are gamers for at least one console (I game on the 360 and PC mostly). Of course I would tell them that I'm a gamer, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Thankfully I only play popular FPS (Halo, COD4, CSS) and sports (NBA, NHL, FIFA) games, not any of those geeky RPG games (WoW, WAR, etc.) , so I have nothing to hide.

That was awesome. But back to the topic, you might as well be honest. If the girl's so against gaming that she wouldn't want to be with you because of it you're better off knowing from the start.

There are more girl gamers out there than most people realize. Many of them are also "closet gamers" because they don't want the same nerd stigma guys get stuck with. Personally, I would be honest about it. As long as the girl knew that I would spend more time with her than alone with my games, I don't see why she should be too opposed to it. If she was, I probably wouldn't want to be with her. I believe there's a girl out there somewhere whose perfect for every guy gamer and vice- versa.

There is no point in hiding for me becouse living in a apartment my consoles are in the living room, but still there is no way in Gods name they can ever know i spend hours going through missions, leveling up and spending 60 bucks on a game. They jus won't understand, So i lie and say something lame like ''oh they are christmas presents, i don't have time for stuff like that''. Things of that nature..Doing so works all the time.Plus you dont want to be seeing a 23 yr. old and have here think its all you do is play games.

It doesn't matter how popular the games are you play they don't look at it that way. They just know you're into games and automatically decide you don't fit their standards.Becouse most of them are attention whores and want everything centered on them, they are too concerned about what guys think of "Them" and not what guys think of the new COD or Resident Evil. Their life evolves around drama, outfits, make-up and menstruating. They will never understand that M rated games are not for kids and or childish

When I first met my then girlfriend and now my wife, I let her know immediately I played games and I enjoyed them very much so. And if she had a problem with that, then she could look elsewhere for someone. She initially had problems with this, but has now came to love it. She practically begs me now to play games, because she says they help her relax and sleep. So I'm like great, she gets what she wants and so do I. Except now, it's kinda boring playing games when she encourages me too. But I would never be afraid to tell a girl that. But then again it depends on what kind of girl your after.

I definitely let them know. It's my hobby of more than 20 years, why would I hide it? I'm not one bit ashamed, and I think women respect that to some extent. But on the same token, if I find out they don't like videogames (which would kinda be a dealbreaker anyway), I won't force games upon them, or play them excessively when they're around. Just like I won't watch Sex In The City with them, I don't expect them to sit through something they're completely uninterested in.

Just like I don't hide the fact that I listen to metal music and take art seriously, I never hide the fact that I play games. It's my hobby and that's what I am. Furthermore, I'd say that proudly. There's absolutely nothing wrong with playing games, it's just like liking movies and books.

Well not to sound arrogant, but I am a pretty good looking guy. So I can usually say just about anything I want to them without getting laughed at. Unless it's nervous laughter.

If you present yourself as an attractive, good-hearted, enjoyable person, then it really won't matter to her what you like to do. Anything you like to do is what cool people do as far as she is concerned. Just never allow yourself to feel like the inferior one. Establish dominance from the beginning and she'll be more concerned with getting you to like her than she will be with trying to find out if you impress her.

Uhm i would most definitely tell. You wouldn't believe how many people are into gaming by now. And if You both find it interesting, and like to dream away in games, or even play together well that's all the better.
Playing games doesn't have to be nerdy, it can be really cool. It can shows You want to have fun in life, that You don't take life too seriously and like to use Your imagination. It's when it turns You into an anti-social reality-ignoring serious gamer where things get icky. But really, if You are like that i don't think You really want a relationship anyways.

Very well said.

While there is no feelings yet, I will tell her that I'm a gamer so that it won't hurt if she doesn't like it. It sucks big time if she hates video games and found out that I'm a gamer when we are already in a relationship.
