I've been waiting for this game?
:o My life means something now

It might be good but thats some terrible voice acting going on there. And considering there is so much of it, it becomes painful to listen through after the first dozen hours. F1Lengendwhat are you on about im playing it now and it has some of the best voice acting in a game I have ever heard.
Well having played it for 5 1/2 hours last night (had to pry myself away as i work early in the morning) i can easialy this is one (if not "the") of the best games i've ever played... i like it that much( thats saying a lot as im not very far, timewise into the game). As far as graphics go i think theyre great (not the best obviously) but im playing at 1920x1080 max settings at 8xAA on a 22.5in 16:9 screen and its running very smooth.
The combat is very smooth, soundtrack is epic especially during battles, menues are great, cutscenes are intensity in-ten-cities, voice acting is topnotch, lore and overall feeling of the game is very grounded and feels real/lived in.
I chose a Rogue for my first playthrough as i never pick this type of class for these types of games or in mmorpgs either and im liking him a lot.
Oh and some of the scenarios thus far have made quite an impact, like "Wow did he just do that" kind of impact, i cant imagine what the rest of the game has in store but its no doubt going to be fantastic.
Tis is of course my opinion and some may not think its as great as i do, but im sure we can all agree that this game is topshelf quality.
I'm enjoying it so far (360 version). It certainly brings back a lot of BioWare memories of conversation branches and deep backstory and plot. I don't know if it is a step back or not, but there seems to be less of a cut and dry moral selection in conversations. In Mass Effect you could really tell which what your character was leaning in choices, either evil or good, yet here there seems to be some real shades of gray - which is actually giving me a tougher time deciding what to say, since I still haven't determined what kind of person my female Elf protaganist is. Though through the bent of the storyline so far I do see myself turning rather mean - just because of events going on that I won't spoil. But BioWare does seem to be crafting a rich tale here.
Graphically the game is alright, but I can see what reviewers are talking about when getting down on the 360. Some of the textures are muddied, and some look just plain flat. This definitely isn't the best looking 360 game of this year, that is for sure. It's pretty, just in a workman's kinda way - if that makes sense. I've already hit a bug or two in my 5 hours so far - a couple instances of voices not loading up - so the subtitles are up, but no voice at all. Nothing major, but an annoyance I guess if one was playing with subtitles off. I haven't seen texture pop-in yet, but with the low-res of some of them I don't think that's going to be an issue like it was in Mass Effect. Another odd quibble I have is sometimes the music doesn't quite match up with the action on the screen. I mean I'm sitting there talking with a Grey Warden friend about how he misses his wife - and in the background the music is playing like we're Sam and Frodo about to drop the ring into Mount Doom. The music quality is great, along with the voice-work, just it seems out of place at times - mis-qued almost.
General combat is something I think will take some getting used to - in my five hours of play I think 1 hour of that has been actual combat (yes it IS a BioWare game - prepare for story!!). The 360 gamepad isn't so bad for the action - the A button pretty much starts off the combat with your basic attacks and then you can have more tactical strikes mapped to the X, Y, and B buttons - up to 6 mapped when you have the RT toggle. It plays sort of like a version of World Of Warcraft - hit the attack and that is all you really have to do as your character will go up and start wailing on the enemy, and if you want to add some other attacks just use your mapped buttons. You don't have to hit a button in time with every attack. The only problem I've encountered, and it is sort of frustrating, is that my character will not automatically move on to the next enemy after defeating the first. I actually have to hit the attack button again to get them to attack. It just seems odd that while surrounded by monsters the character will go up and kill one - and then just stand there if I don't input another command - even to the extent of getting attacked themselves. Oh all the other NPCs will move on to other targets, just not the one I am controlling. I got used to it, but at the same time it seems like something I shouldn't have to get used to.
I know there are some FF12 like tactics that I can program into my party - to get them to attack and heal and all that as needed, but as of yet I haven't really gotten into that portion of the game, hell I don't even think I've met an actual member of my traveling party yet. But I can't wait to get into programing the Mages to heal and buff, while having the Rogues go in for silent kills.
All in all I've liked what I've played so far. There is a ton of history in this world and lots for people to see. Sure there are some complicated aspects (the inventory is still something I'm trying to figure out), but there is also some pretty simple mechanics behind some of the gameplay. I don't think I would recommend it to someone who doesn't already love these sort of games, but that isn't really a surprise. As of now I think I'd give the nod to Mass Effect for a better story and presentation - but like I said I'm just starting out here, and I LOVE Mass Effect.
And even though I'm not a PC gamer AT ALL - I almost wish I had picked this one up for the PC. Oh well - thems the brakes.
I'm a bit skeptical of the time estimates that BioWare are floating around out there - They've said that the game is 60-70 hours minimum - with 6 different "origin" stories that last up to 4 hours for each race you choose. Well I got through my "origin" story in about 65 minutes... no where NEAR the 4 hours the developers where harping on.
I'm having a great time playing it. I'm enjoying it even more knowing that Smerlus is having to wait for his copy while I get to indulge myself in the gaming goodness that is Dragon Age:Origins.
I really like the way the story and characters are developing. On first glance, I thought the graphics were a little on the rough side but considering the size and scope of this game I am actually impressed that it looks so good.
I am still getting a grip on the leveling and upgrading of my characters as well as the programing of each of their roles when fighting but so far they have been doing pretty well. And, it does closely resemble FFXII's combat system which makes things easier yet challenging at the same time.
I can't wait to get home and play some more. Right now, I am at work and can't get this game off my mind.
I bought this for a friend to return a favor he'd done for me. He wasn't able to come by and get it last night so I started playing it. It is awesome. I'm keeping the copy I bought for him and buying him another one. I picked a Dalish Elf, and am playing as a Rogue. I played right up to the part where you become a Grey Warden last night before going to bed. The graphics are a tad underwhelming, but everything else is top notch. I love the world they've built.
That's about where I am am, too. I am playing as a human rogue. I'm really savoring this game and taking my time just enjoying the overall ambiance of the environments and the discussion tree component when interacting with all the other characters. That component makes me want to talk to more people and thus immerses me into the game that much more.I bought this for a friend to return a favor he'd done for me. I like the sound of this. Games like ME, it feels very obvious which is the 'good' and 'bad' choices. I love the idea of more moral grey and more difficult choices, think it will make it more interesting to see how your character and the story develops. Really looking forward to starting this game. only 6 hours to go...I don't know if it is a step back or not, but there seems to be less of a cut and dry moral selection in conversations. It's coming out tomorrow over here and I'm picking it up straight away. I won't be playing it right away, though, as I'm in the middle of my second Mass Effect playthrough. Poor timing on my part. I'm itching to play Dragon Age, but I want to finish Mass Effect first which, for some reason, I'm actually enjoying more than I did on my first playthrough. I'm thinking I'll wrap it up by the end of the week.UpInFlamesI want to go through Mass Effect again before the second one comes out. This time I will go down the evil path. I really think you will find Dragon Age pretty damn awesome. i'm sure it will look very impressive on your PC, too.
I want to pick DA up now, but some of the user impressions mention the jarring experience of being invited on a quest by someone, than being asked for one's wallet because the quest is part of the separately sold DLC (there are two quests whose total cost is $22 on PSN).
Whenever DA's price eventually drops to $30, spending an extra $22 on held back content will pretty much bring the price of the full game to what it should have been originally, so I'll just wait a year or so.

I picked up my copy today in the local bookshop (there's no dedicated game store in my town). One thing's for sure - the cover art is awesome. I'm playing as a Renegade Vanguard dude, I played as a Paragon Soldier female on my first playthrough. Suggesting a menage-a-trois to Ashley and Liara - cIassic.
One of the side quests (which you use to get another ally) is included with new copies of the game (which is also the one that costs $15 dollars to buy, so it's clearly a move to act as an incentive to buy new, and charge people who buy used), so the only DLC you pay for if you want that one other extra quest is 7 dollars, only triggers from one person, and is clearly noted as a side quest. It still is an annoying business practice, but it's not as dire as it looks.I want to pick DA up now, but some of the user impressions mention the jarring experience of being invited on a quest by someone, than being asked for one's wallet because the quest is part of the separately sold DLC (there are two quests whose total cost is $22 on PSN).

I'm having a blast with origins, easily my goty.
My only grips atm is the framerate (360 version) and and the inventory menu.
I'm 10 hours in, and I don't understand why everybody loves this game. There is simply nothing original or fresh about it, particularly the plot and the world. It's nice that there is so much lore to read, but come on, does it really entertain any of you? i could've written all of it when I was 12 years old. The graphics undeniably suck on a technical standpoint, and from an artistic perspective, they are ridiculously bland. Did it really take them 5 years to develop this game? I find that very hard to believe.
Sorry to sound so scathing, but I'm so sick of being disappointed by seemingly every new game that gets released these days. What game can I turn to for some originality, creativity and challenge??
once i finish uni exams (for ever this time!) on the 14th - i will be all over this game like white on rice :D :D i gotta finish the witcher first thojoel_c17I was so disappointed when they cancelled the console version of The Witcher
Everything you said about Dragon Age can be said the same for Kingdom Hearts (sees your avatar and sig). It's all taste and style, man. Like Fallout 3, Dragon Age probably isn't a game for everyone, but that doesn't mean that it's a bad game that goes with everything you said.I'm 10 hours in, and I don't understand why everybody loves this game. I guess I can't argue with that, but I do strongly disagree with it. I really think I just dislike (hate?) western RPGs. Obviously every discussion involving games is based on opinion, but I would make the argument that Dragon Age is a bad game
Back when I played and was horribly disappointed by Morrowind, I was quite vocal about it here in GGD, which led to some fun exchanges with people and ultimately brought me to saying this: "Morrowind was so open-ended because it dropped you into a hollow, empty world where you are the only actual person to speak of. WRPGs, for all their open-ended freedom, will be completely and utterly irrelevant until the game world's involvement with the player matches up to the player's involvement with it."
Though it's beside the point, I then went on to list radically branching storylines as the next big evolutionary step that the Japanese side needs to take within the RPG genre (though in the seven years since these conversations, I haven't seen that step taken, either). I should have known BioWare would be the ones to carry out what I had in mind for WRPGs.
Now, to call me a fan of BioWare would be stretching it considerably. I loved Baldur's Gate right up to the moment Imoen became encumbered and I had to retool the party's entire inventory by hand. After finding out there was no way to auto-assign heavy item drops to the characters that can best heft them around, I stopped playing and never looked back. Between that incident and the subsequent experience with the plain and hollow world of Morrowind, I developed a very powerful distaste for the Western take on the genre altogether.
Now for Dragon Age: Origins itself...
I really hadn't followed its development at all. I didn't even know BioWare was the team behind it until a few days ago. Up to that point, I only knew it as the subject of many news blurbs on Kotaku, the content of which I never really looked into. However, all that Kotaku buzz made me curious, and led me to take a closer look as reviews began rolling out. The scores didn't affect me one way or another, as they never do. However, if I were to put it to a checklist of things I wanted to see from the WRPG genre, it would pass with flying colors.
-Ability to determine your character's pre-existing backstory from a more substantial place than merely your own imagination? Check. (Though limiting your options based on race/job does disappoint me, I'll take it for the time being.)
-Memorable cast of characters that will fight alongside and otherwise interact with you throughout the game? Check. (Am I the only one who immediately thought of FFVI's Edgar when meeting Cailin? Absolute homage if ever I've seen it.)
-Lots of opportunities to affect the flow of the storyline on a major scale? Check.
-Battle system that doesn't suck? Check. (Honestly never did have a problem with this battle system, just the other aspects of the games attached to it. The single-character focus of the console version is a nice touch, puts me right at home with a PSO/FFXI hybrid feel.)
I could probably go on like this for awhile, but you get the idea.
So anyway, Thursday morning, I picked up the last PS3 Dragon Age: Origins LE at Best Buy. The only reason it did not completely dominate my days off is because I am also in possession of the game that has already danced away with my GotY title: Forza Motorsport 3. However, I have spent some good time with it all the same, and already know that the fundamental question I'll be asking myself after work or when I wake up on my days off any time for the forseeable future is, "Will it be Forza 3 or Dragon Age today?"
Good on BioWare for cranking out a WRPG I could actually bring myself to buy, play, and enjoy.

The lack of an automation process for item distribution did, because correcting the matter took more time than I was interested in spending.
Dragon Age is the first game I can remember where decisions carry so much weight. Particularly in conversations. It's great that there are a lot of characters you can add to your party - but this is also a problem. I mean why would I want to have anyone else in my party if it means I'll miss out on Morrigan and Alistair's banter/ bickering? I'm not too far into the game but that factor alone is guiding my party making decisions. Sorry Sten. Entertain me with banter/conversation or ride the pine.
There have been some tough decisions and shocking dilemmas in this game so far. I'm at Radcliffe(sp) and have to deal with what's going on at the castle. I can see how someone could take the easy choice in that situation instead of having to go to another town for a solution. I also was shocked by the Grey Warden ceremony. I couldn't believe what happened! It made me think, "I'm not sure I want to be a part of this group"

Wow! If you enjoy it then I guess Dragon Age is pretty good! I'm saying this because I know we both prefer JRPGs over WRPGs, although I enjoy WRPGs as well. Fallout 3 is one of my favorite RPGs of all-time for example.
I think I may like Dragon Age as well. I was planning on waiting a bit to pick DA up but I think I'll snag it as soon as I get some cash! Looks fun...and addicting.
