I'm starting my Dragon Age marathon after a nice nap, which I think will be one of the longest since Baldur's Gate II was new. =D

[QUOTE="SteelAttack"]Damn you PC gamers! I want that and not the watered down console port. The way the game is described sounds like the perfect RPG experience. Entering a gameworld with a detailed history of its own, that feels as if it has lived, and keeps on living even if you're not playing the game. kfjl
I haven't followed this game too closely; what are the differences between the console version and the PC version that would make it watered down?

The console version is watered down because its a console version :P

PC version is always the real thing

Looks like my type of rpg: strong story and strong characters. The only good thing about most non-Bioware WRPGs this gen is that you can level up.

Wow, this game is awesome. This is a no brainer for RPG of the Year. What suprised me is that this game is nothing like its marketing campaign, which was atrocious. While the overall plot was kind of cliche, it is still excellent. But it is about the characters, maybe Bioware's best cast. While Morrigan, Allister, Zervan. Wynne, and Oghren are all excellent, its Leliana that steals the show. She combines the humanity of a Dawn Star and the toughness of Ashley Williams. And the romance with her is brilliantly executed. I like how Wynne commits on the players relationship with her, warning about the dangers of the relationship with the task at hand, but realizes later how special the bond is. Lelina also sings a song later, which is pretty poignant scene in the game. This is the best executed romance in a Bioware game. Next playthrough is Morrigan's turn, then Allister's.

Well I have some minor complaints.

Why does it seem like just about all 3D WRPGs have horrible frame-rate, fugly looking animations, and clunky controls? I haven't really played Mass Effect, so I can't say all 3D WRPGs are like this (Mass Effect looked smooth from videos, but who knows how the actual game is?), but in general that's my view towards entire genre. At least from my personal experiance.

It's really minor thing, so I can't complain about it too much, but it's a minor thing that's ALWAYS there. Throughout the entire game, it just ruins it for me.

and dress in the game look really weird. It has really odd skin tight skirt thing that just looks so wrong.

Well other than that, I'm having a good time. No plans to get DLC though. If Dragon Age makes complete version 2 years later that includes all DLC, I might get that but I just don't like the idea of DLC so I'll pass on that.

It's because you buy them on consoles. The Mass Effect on PC runs flawlessly (pretty much what i've hearf) while Dragon's Age runs flawlessly on my PC with no lag, everything maxed out and at high resolutions.

I'm about 14 hours in, and am loving this game. I sorta caved and bought the Warden's Keep DLC. I needed the storage.:P I also did the other DLC quest where you get Shale. He is a powerful bastard, I just wish they made his footsteps quieter. The incessant pounding gets a little obnoxious. This game really recaptures a lot of the fun that I had the first time I played Knights of the Old Republic.

yes yes let me bow down to you oh great PC gamer.

well that's quite ignorant. You complain about something, someone offers a fix and than you accuse them of being bias.

And by the way. Way to generalize the wholeWRPG genre based on two games made by the same developer. Oblivion, and most versions of Fallout 3 dont lag, either does Fable 2, MUA 2 and Borderlands (unless you have a crap load of action going on the screen at once.)

I bought the DLC for Warden's Keep as well. It took me a couple of minutes to decide if I really wanted to condone this soft/viral sale of content but then I figured that there is already so much in this game already that it was worth a shot. I'm not really sure if it was completely worth it or not but I really wanted to know what happened to the Keep so I finally caved in. I need to look into getting Shale. I think it came with my Collector's edition so hopefully I won't have to pay for it.

I think Shale came with every version of the game, you should have a voucher code for it in the game's case.

I got the game now so you can stop enjoying it so much. anyways if you got the CE then you got the blood dragon armor, a few other items and Shale and the sidequest. Then depending if you got it from Amazon or Gamestop you may have received a few other items. I bought the Warden's Keep even before I popped in the game. I usually buy any DLC for any game i like

Oh am I being ignorant?

Everyone knows that high end PC often solves the frame-rate problems.

I played KOTOR 1 and 2 on PC. It was quite above the requirements, but frame-rate problem was still there, so no PC doesn't automatically and magically fix everything.

But besides that, you managed to ignore the other 2 problems and focused on single problem. Will getting it on PC version magical transform some fugly looking animations? NO Will getting PC version fix the clunky character movement? NO (Yes I understand mouse and keyboard controls are better suited for this game, but character movement will still feel loose due to the programming)

and will it fix the weird looking skirt design? NO

So who's the ignorant one now? By focusing strictly on frame-rate which all gamers should know about, and ignore all the other issues, and speak as if PC version would fix all those issues. To me, that sounds like someone who is ignorant.

actually the only control complaints people had about this game is they wished the console version could be used with a mouse and keyboard. I don't know what you're talking about clunky controls because things work fine on pc. i can either use the keyboard to move them or click on a spot in the ground to have them go there. So yes it does fix the control problems. Funky animations? you could zoom out farther in the PC version to get a better tactical view and see more of the level while making the character movement less of an obtrusion. and finally you'll have to be more descriptive than "random skirt doesn't look right." so between controls, framerate, animations and a skirt as the major problems...two of them are fixed, one could be fixed depending on one's taste and if a skirt is really bothering you maybe you can pop in Sims 3 where they have great looking skirts...but you'd need a pc to do that also.:P

I was so excited about the game at the time and there were so many redemption codes to put in that I have forgotten. Now I think about it, yes, I do remember putting in a code for Shale. I dont think I havent gotten to him yet though. I'm still trying to work through the chaos at the tower of the Circle of Magi.

I actually bought my collector's edition at my local Fry's Electroinics. They had a lot of them for the 360 and PC. In fact so much so that I think they stocked them all there just make you wait a few more days in order to play it. I spoke with the store manager, and yes, they did indeed conspire against you this whole time.

Yeah, Shale's footsteps are annoying but at least they are not as bad as Teddie's in Persona 4. Besides that the conversations with him more than make up for it. I almost fell out of my chair laughing in regards to what he did when leaving the village where you wake him up.

So far I am really digging this game. My only complaint is the PS3 version has a LOT of pop ups.....either that or plant life grows at such an alarming rate that the real threat to the land should be the vegetation. Would've gotten the PC version, but my comp doesn't have the oomph to handle it and I have no desire to upgrade my pc.

.. I'd forgotten about Teddie. Yeah, he didn't stay in my party for long. I haven't had a computer of my own for about two years now, so I'm playing the PS3 version as well.

I finished Mass Effect yesterday and I finally started playing Dragon Age today. Didn't play enough for any proper impressions so I'll just offer some general observations. I'm playing as a female human Mage. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find the optimal control scheme. After messing about a bit, I settled for a mouse-only option. It just feels fast and intuitive. Movement, camera, pause all mapped to the mouse. For everything else, I'm using the interface. Tried the mouse/keyboard combo, but it just didn't feel right. I shudder to think what it must be like playing with a controller. I like that the game automatically takes screenshots at certain key moments. Great idea. I won't be able to upload any today, but I think I'll post some tomorrow. Speaking of which, the game looks great. Character models are easily comparable to Mass Effect, I'd even give the edge to Dragon Age in terms to facial detail. The environments are a step down, but this is a computer RPG in which you can pull the camera all the way up to an isometric view (will prove handy in larger battles) so it can't really be judged on the same standard. It is really, really polished. I can't even believe it's a BioWare game. :P It runs like butter maxed out. I love the all-British cast. Gives it that authentic feel.

The controller doesn't feel clunky at all. It's kind of like holding a mouse that has all the buttons on it and you just hold the left trigger down and navigate with the right analog stick to choose your battle options.

I'm playing a rogue right now and using the analog stick to maneuver and flank enemies feels natural to me.

Actually, the way it's set up makes it feel like a PSO/FFXI hybrid. It's very natural. Also, the cast isn't all-British. There are some names on there that are very popular in American anime localization studios.

Yeah this game is faaaaaaantastic indeed. I also think that it plays very well with a controller. Shale is hilarious, I love the banter that goes back and forth with various members in your party. The writing and voice-acting in the game is awesome and there's tons of dialog. Right now I'm about 40 hours into the game with my level 15 human warrior and I still have 40% of the game world left to explore and lots of sidequests left to do so there's plenty of game here. I'm definitely going to get the DLC that is out right now, Shale's DLC and the Blood Dragon Armor come with every copy of Dragon Age so those are free anyway. I sure hope they bring out some more DLC in the future. Kudos to Bioware for once again crafting an amazing game.

My pre-ordered copy of DA:O for the 360 showed up today.

However, after reading reviews and impressions of the 360 version I'm just going to return it and buy the Steam version, I'm not going to waste my time with what seems to be a clearly inferior version.

Same here except substitute PS3 for 360. I enjoyed what I played of the PS3 version but the console combat is a chaotic mess compared to the precision of the p and p combat on the PC. (I turned the tactics off and am micro-managing the fighting.) Not to mention the graphics. As many people have already said - if one has the option of getting the PC version over a console- do that.

The ones with the interface shown I took myself, the ones with no interface are autoscreens. All are captured using the game's own system.

I am considering buying this game but I am looking for some information before I commit to buying it. Is this game anything like Never Winter Nights 2 with a lot of cut scenes where you cannot do anything until the cut scene is over? I am not talking about a couple of scenes but ones such as in Never Winter Nights 2 where to me there are too many that removes any control by the player. I guess something more in line with Fall Out 3 or Oblivion, as I came to really dislike Never Winter Nights 2 just because of the cut scenes. Any comments would be welcomed.

Any comments would be welcomed. skatar01887
the game is dialogue heavy wiht a bunch of those scenes but if you like you can just hit esc through them, choose your dialogue option and keep moving.

I'm about 10 hours in and I'm enjoying the game a lot. I would go so far as to say that this is the best combat I've ever witnessed in an RPG. It's nothing particularly mindblowing or new, but it's just so refined and subtly nuanced. I turned off the AI and I'm micromanaging all the party actions myself. It's the only way to go, in my opinion.

Anyway, here's a few sweet screens I took yesterday (click on image for full view):

What I've done is figured out the combat tactics and programmed the characters to do what I do would do if I controlled them in the first place. Unfortunately, there's no way of programming Rogues to go for backstabs, so that's the most micro I have to do.

I tried messing around with the tactics, but it seems that no matter what, sometimes a character will do something I don't approve of. I prefer a hands-on approach in terms of tactical combat which really gets me to familiarize myself with the all the nuances of not only combat, but also skills, cIasses and abilities so micromanaging it actually proved to be a more enjoyable experience for me.

Leliana's song, amazing

She reminds me of Dawn Star of Jade Empire, a warm caring person who gives the game its humanity. But you can also darken her like Dawn Star as well (not turn her evil though).

Sweet screens, dude. Love the hazy blue lighting in that room. Yeah, that was a great battle.

I've only recently met her, but she's a bit of a jarring character. She's a sister of the Chantry who sees the Maker in her visions/dreams. But what's her cIass? Rogue. Skills? Lockpicking, stealing, backstabs, dirty fighting. Doesn't make much sense to me. I see Rogues as persons with questionable morals and motives. Not necessarily bad people, but not part of the clergy either (I don't know, maybe I'll find out about her corrupt side later on so it'll make more sense).

You have to talk to her to understand more about her background, which would put things into perspective. Her background makes a good amount of sense when it's all revealed, but I'm not going to say any of it here.

That's good to know. I thought BioWare perhaps dropped the ball on that one.

Wow im not as enamoured with the game as the rest of you thats for sure. This is like Shadows Of Amn lite, the glory days of rpgs are over. First of all they casualized the whole experience. Health and Mana regenerate on their own after every battle... playing a mage on the console version sucks as there are only 6 quick slots for spells (really?) .... the characters being drenched in blood thing all the time is lame I look like I came from an all you can eat satanic baby buffett....... english voiceovers are annoying ...... game is incredibly easy ..... the graphics are hideous, it looks like a ps2 game. Im incredibly dissapointed but im only 10 hours in so im gonna see it through. After coming from Demons Souls this game feels sloppy and unfinished.

Umm... Are we playing the same game? :?

As for the ease, I've heard and seen that about the console version. Heck, on the console version friendly fire doesn't come on till hard mode, and even then its only half damage. That is the Normal setting for the PC version. DAO really seems like a PC RPG made easier for the console audience.

I just recently finished this game and I loved it. It's a beast of a game as I clocked in nearly 80 hours for my first playthrough and still had a number of sidequests left unfinished. I'll certainly be playing it again and with the different characters to play as along with the numerous different choices you can make in your interactions with others in the game really makes this a monster of a game. I must say that this game has the longest list of credits I have ever seen. There's also a pretty long list of voice actors in here which doesn't really surprise me given the amount of spoken dialog in the game. Great job Bioware, kudos to you.

1. Hitting L2 brings up all your spells, you can access any time in battle, IIRC. Or, you could play on PC. :P

2. You can turn off persistent Gore in Options, which will get rid of the blood on armor.

3. If the game's easy, turn up the difficulty level...it gets much harder quickly depending on what type of fights you try to get into.

This is one of my favorite RPGs in a while, and I know it'd be better on PC, but I can't quite be sure that it'll run well on the damn thing, so I'm sticking with the PS3 version for now. Still am enjoying it greatly.

Cool stuff Skylock. I ordered this game last week on Ebay but still havent gotten it in the mail yet. I'm dying to play it, especially after how Meh COD is. How does the game world compare with something like Oblivion? Do you find it more interesting to wonder around? What about overall, is the game more immersive than Oblivion?
