Grraaagh, I hate that game. Don't worry, not because it's bad, it was awesome :D. My Favorite so far still remains star Ocean TTEOT. Followed closely by FFX and Dark Chronicle. I have SMT Lucifer Call lined up, so it might change soon. But might not..
King's Field: The Ancient City is my favorite, hands down. I am absolutely in love with that series. And the Ancient City just looked beautiful with the PS2's graphics (compared to the earlier PS1 releases in the series). The series a full RPG with a level-up system, magic spells to learn, armor and weapons to find, and enemies to fight. But the action is real-time, and is fought from a first-person shooter perspective, instead of using guns and grenades you use swords & axes, magic spells, and bows & arrows. There is a heavy emphasis on exploration and having to figure things out for yourself. As for games that are a little more well known, I'd have to go with Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Both the first and second games are great D&D based hack-n-slash RPGs. I totally admit that the PC Baldur's Gate's and Neverwinter Nights games were far better D&D based hack-n-slash RPGs, but then those were never released on PS2, so Dark Alliance is the best of those games on PS2. Lots of enemies, items, weapons & armor, spells, and other goodies in this game. -Nate-

Wow, Dragon Quest is getting much love :) I agree it is my favorite too! I am currently playing through Dragon Warrior (Quest)VII on the PS. I love the oldschool feel of the game.

SMT series gave to the PS2 the best RPG's on the console. Dark Cloud and Baldur's Gate are great to.Bbut my favorite is the first Kingdom Hearts, just beacause Final Fantasy 9 was realeased on PS.
Radiata Stories for me. Finding all the friends was a challenge. The peppy music, the bright colors, charming cartoony character designs and opposing elf/human paths made this one ofmy most played games for the PS2. Next would be Rogue Galaxy and then Steambot Chronicles.
Final Fantasy XII for me. That game revitalized and modernized the stagnating FF series and JRPGs in general. Too bad FFXIII took it a step back. I'm honestly surprised at all the love that FFX has been getting. It's probably the most overrated FF aside from FFVII. Annoying characters, bad voice acting, nonsensicle plot written for 8 year old school girls, weak battle system that took little to no attention, and (my biggest grip) almost completely linear experience with little room for exploration.
