This game just came out of nowhere. I was looking for a new shooter to buy, so I read reviews on GameSpot so I could choose one, including the much talked about Call-of-Duty BlackOps. Looked at the videos etc. Several things put me off COD:-
1. basically C.O.D. gratuitous mass human slaughter, (and it's now clear to me that C.O.D. is a game which takes itself far too seriously);
2. C.O.D. emphasis on internet multiplay (a sure turn-off sign for me is when most of a game review is talks about the internet multiplay);
3. storylines (yawn) -- if I want a story I'll read a book or watch a film.
And then by lucky chance I read GameSpot's review on Sega's "Vanquish". I'd neither previously heard of it, nor had I heard of "Platinum Games".
Hmm.I still wasn't sure which one to buy – Black-Ops, or Vanquish? Then a few days later, I was just wandering into Virgin Megastore, and I saw both C.O.D. and Vanquish on the shelf in front of me, both at the same fairly high price.
After much deliberating I plucked for Vanquish.And boy did I make the right decision. Vanquish is a total blast. Everything about the gameplay and the game engine is simply astounding. Vanquish is a masterpiece and the best true "game" in my opinion. I just couldn't put the PS3 controller down. I played it all weekend, and now I'm going to play it again in 'hard' skill level (as well as the Challenge side modes). . .
In short, who cares about the "storyline"? Indeed, games that are based on 'stories', well, you just play them once. They are rather like reading a book -- once you've read it, you don't read it again. But Vanquish is not a story. Vanquish is action, and a whole lot of fun. So I'm going back for more. . .
