Symphony of the Night. So awesome it transcends time and it's awesomeness even predates Iga's thought of making it.

This... isn't exactly a remake, and I don't think it ever will. Ported? Already been done... no need for a remake though.

& I'd have to go with REmake. They managed to update and upgrade the game without it feeling like you were just going through the original again, and managed to be (in my opinion) the best of the RE games that used that fomula.

If Square Enix is making the Final Fantasy 7 remake, it will be the greatest remake of all time. Just thinking of the possibility makes me happy. :)

That doesn't really answer the question either, and it also assumes that a possible remake would be good and worthwhile. Not all remakes have been enhancements over the originals, nor can you assume something without playing it.

I'd say REmake is the most popular choice. But I have to go with Metroid Zero Mission. My favorite remake and one of my favorite games ever.

Definitely Resident Evil on the Gamecube. To me, it still looks impressive! My second choice would be MGS: The Twin Snakes on the....uh Gamecube again.

Well, many developers, including Tetsuya Mizuguchi claims Tetris is the perfect and king of games, but it's been remade countless of times.

Also, there has been many remakes of Symphony of the Night. It's called Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and maybe even Order of Ecclesia!:P

Nah seriously, I'm joking about SotN. But Mizuguchi did claim Tetris was the perfect game and the king of games.

I still hold Super Mario All-Stars with a very high degree of respect. Though it wasn't anything more than an enhancement for the graphics and music, it was just done so well. It only improved the game, and kept all the core elements in place. Nintendo knew what to touch and what not to touch. And it didn't hurt that you got 4 games for the price of one.

Sword of Mana I think gets overlooked a lot too. It took a very bare bones kind of game and added a lot of depth to it. You got a better magic system, a class system, an option to play as 2 different characters and a completely fleshed out story. It wasn't the greatest game in the world, but looking at it just from a remake standpoint, it was very well done.

Similarly, last year's Prince of Persia Classic and this year's Bionic Commando Rearmed are excellent remakes, as they kept the underlying gameplay, added/tweaked/tightened-up the moves, and made them look all purdy.

The greatest remake of all time to me has to be Resident Evil Remake imo. Not only did Capcom revamped the game with better graphics, but it also includes a variety of new environments, gameplay elements, and story details about their other main characters such as William Birkin. Even though it wasn't much of an new addition to the Resident Evil series, the 180 degree turn to me definitely made REmake an more enjoyable experiences.

What you get with this version are more noticeable feature that made this the overall best remake in my opinion was how they change some of the puzzle which made the game feel fresh, but at the same time kept the Resident Evil 1 feel to it. There were others additions like defense weapons and subplot that definitely made this a great remake unlike some games out there that just update the graphic without changing anything else to it.

REmake was probably the best remade game that took a game that was originally very good and added new content to make it even better. Most times when you alter a good game in any way other than the graphics it ends up hurting the overall experience.

I watched a good friend play it once who was a huge RE junkie, but wasn't aware that REmake was more than just a graphic enhancement. I just remember him playing and after about 20 minutes or so into the game he got a very puzzled look on his face and then shouted, "WTF??? THAT DOESN'T F***'ING BELONG HERE!!!"

Best remakes I've ever played were Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes and Pokemon Firered. Megaman Powered Up on the PSP is also pretty nice.

EDIT: Completely forgot about Super Mario All-Stars, amazing game of course. Also I recently Kirby Superstar Ultra which was great in it's own terms but I never played the original so I can't really say how good of a remake it is.

That doesn't really answer the question either, and it also assumes that a possible remake would be good and worthwhile. Not all remakes have been enhancements over the originals, nor can you assume something without playing it.

If it's a remake it's probably gonna be the same, but with enhanced graphics and maybe some other new stuff. For the most part all the things I loved about the original (The story, characters, battle system, materia system) will still be there, plus the better graphics and other things. So that's why I think it justifies assuming it will be the greatest remake of all time (IMO), even though I haven't played it.

And also look at Square's other remakes. Most of them get good reviews so I doubt they would screw up a FF7 remake.

They could probably screw it up big time. They'd most likely use the Advent Children look, a realistic one, on a game that was originally halfway based on anime (look at any of the CGIs and tell me otherwise). Imagine the results. And key scenes would end up looking weird, like Aeris' death or Cloud in the wheelchair.

I think the Resident Evil Remake is the ONLY remake that ended up surpassing the original.

Seriously, the original is almost BLAND now.

Bionic Commando was great, but Prince of Persia remake was pretty horrible.

anyway, Final Fantasy Tactics, Lions War is the greatest remake of all time. Best story finally meets equally good translation. That's enough.

I imagined the results and I see nothing wrong with it. I don't think a realistic look is going to make anything look weird. Even if it does, I'm pretty sure people can get over it and still enjoy the game. And that is hardly a big screw up.

Artistic style can be a BIG factor in the quality of a game. Why do you think people loved Sly Cooper games? And the original FF7 had a bit of a sense of humor, something that realistic graphics would not permit.

From the stuff I have gotten to play(ie nothing super new) I would say....

Metroid -> Metroid Prime

Mario Brothers -> Mario 64

zelda -> zelda oot/mm

gta -> gta:SA

Those are my picks from my interpretation of "remake".

Bionic Commando was great, but Prince of Persia remake was pretty horrible.

That POP remake was spot on and merely included a few enhancements to keep the gameplay smooth and relevant. If you didn't enjoy the POP remake I'm assuming you didn't like or play the original either because as remakes go, it's one of the most faithful.

But it hasn't been announced yet, and who would that game please? Only the fans.

Part of the charm is the art style. The use of cel shading gave it a film noir feel that complemented the thieving greatly.

Yes, I agree, gameplay is the top priority, but art style can make an otherwise great game complete crap. Example: Metal Gear Solid. OK, not complete crap, but the game could've been a bit better. Why? The art style sucks. Everything is grey. The walls are grey, the characters are grey (they probably captured Meryl because her hair had some color), there's a character named Grey (Fox), the main machine is grey, IT IS ALL SO GREY!!! Greyer than North Korea.

& I'd have to go with REmake. They managed to update and upgrade the game without it feeling like you were just going through the original again, and managed to be (in my opinion) the best of the RE games that used that fomula.

Agreed. REmake was the best of the old series. And SOTN wasn't much of a remake.

Resident Evil.

MGS: Twin Snakes was also good, though I prefer the original for that old school flavor :P .

Rather than echo the opinions of the REMake concensus, I'm going to have to go with Super Mario 64 DS. Even though we're living in a time where technology continues to accelerate at a swift pace, the entire notion of porting a relatively large cart into a chip that is small enough to fit into an Altoids container never ceases to amaze me.

Mario All-Stars was great for reasons already mentioned - keeping the games intact and just brushing up their visuals a bit.

Similarly, last year's Prince of Persia Classic and this year's Bionic Commando Rearmed are excellent remakes, as they kept the underlying gameplay, added/tweaked/tightened-up the moves, and made them look all purdy.

Grammaton-Cleric

Bionic Commando was great, but Prince of Persia remake was pretty horrible.

That POP remake was spot on and merely included a few enhancements to keep the gameplay smooth and relevant. If you didn't enjoy the POP remake I'm assuming you didn't like or play the original either because as remakes go, it's one of the most faithful.

I did play and loved the original.

The remake is missing all of it's charm.

Such as sadistic difficulty level, smooth animation, etc etc etc.

Sure the level design might be the same, but it's ruined with all the "new tricks" prince has under his sleeves.

Original was so much better.

Hmmmm. I see what you mean. Well, lets just wait and see how it turns out. I can tell you one thing though. I was never worried about the art style and I never will be, with this game at least.

And people love Sly Cooper because it is a good and fun game. If the art style was different, do you honestly think those people wouldn't love it anymore?

In my opinion, art style is important, but not important enough to base a games quality on.

Video_Game_King

There's nothing wrong with grey! Would you have preferred a pastel colored MGS?

LOL! I'll have to agree with you there. Metal Gear Solid was too grey for it's own good, but I still don't think that some color would have made the game any better. It would of been nice to have more color though.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes comes to mind, and also FFIII and FFIV for the DS.

I wouldn't consider Super Mario 64 a remake because it's a port with extra features. It doesn't matter what platform it's on.

I also think Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP is a good remake.
