GTAIV Episodic Content Exclusive to 360

It seems a lot of things are happening behind the scenes, and really believe that MS is securing various "devices" to give them the edge over their competitors, in order to make the price drop that much more significant.

A Take-Two spokesperson has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that the episodic content planned for Grand Theft Auto IV will be exclusively released for the Xbox 360

The Xbox 360, with the highest install base, has seen most of its recent additions come from smaller development houses. The kinds of companies that create the kinds of games that complement your system sellers for people that already own the console. Third party support was the PS2's main strength in the early part of its lifecycle and it looks like the 360 is following that path.LINK

Well, we knew that from the beginning. What's far more interesting is that they finally confirmed that LA Noire is heading to the 360 as well as the PS3.

I seriously doubt Rockstar is preparing any content for GTA IV that won't be on both systems. Some time ago, they talked about how the DVD format for the 360 didn't offer them as much space as the Blu-Ray disc did. Therefore, from some of the sources I've heard chatting about this, it seems more likely that the content will be included in the PS3 game, but will be downloadable extras for the 360 version. Then again, perhaps that's not the case, and the developers simply haven't thought about preparing any content for the PlayStation Network.

However, this would be shooting themselves in the foot. Why even bother to release the game on the PS3 at all if the 360 version is the only one getting any extra content down the road? It seems extremely unlikely to me.

To most, I imagine just being able to play it is great, you don't need EVERYTHING to have a good time with a game.

LA Noire looks nice, but its from the people who inflicted The Getaway upon the world.

I'm definently getting the X360 version. Additional story driven content sounds veryinteresting, though its hard to get excited without knowing more details.

Why do you care? If you're so smart, informed and superior to everyone else, why would other people's collective stupidity annoy you?

I've made numerous marketplace purchases for games like Crackdown and Marvel Alliance that I consider to be sound investments. Ultimately, it's up to each individual to decide if downloadable content is worth the money and while I agree that certain items and expansions are overpriced I hardly think it's as bad as you're trying to spin it. I guess we'll have a better idea of how reasonable or unreasonableMarketplace really is when Sony finally starts offering comparable services and downloads.

Assuming of course that ever happens.

'Episodic content' implies a whole new story arc taking place over a series of missions. 'Exclusive' implies that this new 'campaign' will only be seen on the 360 version of the game.

Which currently makes the 360 version the best version to buy...unless different exclusive content is announced for any other system.

Heh, well technically it's just one guy (the founder of the studio), but this time they have the Housers backing, so I'm cautiously optimistic. Besides, The Getaway wasn't that bad - in my opinion, it was definitely the most original and interesting GTA clone. Under Rockstar's guidance, these guys could very well deliver the goods.

I suspect Rockstar is a savy, demanding negotiator and I also suspect Sony has decided not to play their game this time around. The exclusivity windows of the GTAs steadily shrunk on the PS2 (SA had 6 months of exclusivity, and Rockstar announced that an Xbox version was in the pipeline well before the 6 months were up), though I'm willing to bet the amount of money Sony paid Rockstar didn't.

On a related note, Sony (which is to put it mildly, more resource constrained than MS) seems to be avoiding bidding wars and insteadfundingsmall developers the other guys aren't interested in(think of the makers of Littlebigplanet, Flow and Heavenly Sword).I also suspectSony would have to pay for more exclusivity than MS because developers are forgoing more consumers. Anyway, throwing money to small developers is an interesting strategy which will probably result in more true exclusives (i.e. games which are exclusive forever as opposed to have windows of exclusivity) that the other strategy would for Sony since I am willing to bet that small developers are just happy to get a contract aren't merely negotiating a window.

Of course, onlytime will tell if it would have made more commercialsense to buy six months or a year of exclusivity for DMC4 thantopay for the development ofHeavenly Sword.

Using it as well as an example of Microsoft secureing "awesome exclusives" is using them in the wrong context. Ace Combat is not going to be gang busters, it is a niche title. Katamari just looks like trash.

Not everything on marketplace is a bad deal though. A lot of it is up to the individual developers for the content and prcing and whatnot. Everyone knows the Guitar Hero 2 packs are a ripoff for instance (though I still bought one for Ace Of Spades and Bark At The Moon) cause well I have extra cash, anyways most games and such are fairly priced I feel.

I know theres worthwhile stuff on there. The problem is people are actually buying some of the crap that microsoft puts up there, what some in here fail to realize is that if people keep buying the bad deals, the bad deals arent going to stop coming.

1) The brilliance/appeal of Katamari Damancy was the uniqueness of its concept, not the quality of its visuals, so I hope Sony and Nintendo didn't pass up exclusivity because they weren't impressed by its visuals. That would just be missing the point.

2) Ace Combat is a quality game. I think every quality game is worth having because every quality game tends to be a system seller for someone (though some have bigger audiences than others). GTA only sold to 15% of the PS2's userbase, so by definitionsmaller franchises such as Guitar Hero, Virtua Fighter, Disgaea, Twisted Metal and suchlike played a bigger role in most people's decision to purchase a PS2. A healthy system has a broad library of games, including niche games.

3) I agree with you that some of the pricing of downloadable content is unreasonable, but that's no more true for downloadable content than it is of full games. There is some really, really great stuff on XBL at reasonable prices and there is some really garbage stuff on XBL which isn't worth any price.

Katamari Damacy was such a surreal, surprisingly addicting, and insanely fun afair that made me want to get a PS2 and I was very happy when Beautiful Katamari was announced as a multi-platform release. If Microsoft really secured the exclusivity, it was a great catch.

A fair point. I consider myself a fan of the franchise, but I skipped the third game just because the uniqueness had worn off for me (a new twist needs to be introduced IMHO).

Well there is a certain other issue that is not network related which could be the problem. Something with the way the PS3 deals with memory is the reason the PS3 version of Oblivion is not able to support all the downloadable extras that are on the X360 version. It's possible that in large, open-ended worlds like Oblivion or GTA4, the PS3 is simply incapable of loading in these extras and downloadables.

Although this certainly doesn't seem to be the case with simpler games. As I believe games like Motorstorm have had some extras added in through downloads.

The network is fine, you can download full games off the PS3 network that is not an issue at all. The real explination is simple, money. Thats whats going on, MS paid the big bucks and got the exclusive.

Sony and 3rd parties' support of the network really leaves a lot to be desired. Videos and demos of games pop up frequently on XBL, but are rare events on Sony's network (that is the case even when a game is slated to hit both systems at the same time think Assasin's Creed and The Darkness). Look at Sony Gamer's Day, where a lot of cool stuff was announced. I figured a ton of footage would hitPSN the following Thursday, but instead trailers dribbled out onto the network one or two at a time week by week. By way of contrast, when a big media event is held, the trailers all hit XBL that day. I honestly don't know what barriers stand in-between PSN and strong developer support but whatever their nature, Sony needs to knock them down in a hurry.
