I think it's poor taste on Capcom's part, and there is a difference between this setting and Spain or Dead Rising. You got thousands of Africans being slaughtered in Darfur/the rest of the country daily with little to nothing being done to stop it. Africa is just one of those sensitive spots, much like Iraq(which would be another area that should not be used in games) and having a form of media that is designed to be fun set there just FURTHER trivilizes the real, daily hardships Africans that are never reported. Bottom line it's offensive and Capcom deserves whatever flack they get, legitimate or not.

trifecta_basic

I think you might be a bigot because you care about the skin color of the man doing the killing and the skin color of zombies in a video game. A company does not deserve to be called a racist because of idiots who don't know that this game is not even set in Africa.(It;s suppose to be in the Cairabean Hati) You don't seem to be offended at all the WW2 games which one could argue that trivilizes the biggest loss of life in the History of Man. But millions of dead russian, east europeans, gypsies and Jews seems to have been cool with you. tha is if you actuall care about people and not just sterotype the game because you see a "evil white man that represents all the white devils from the hsitory of the world" killing the poor Black zombies.

again the game not set in AFrica, so now what you are talking about before yougo on a prescriptedPC rant. It mightbe to much for you to look past you assumtions and preconcieved notions.

Ummm...what kind of people..other than black people...live in Africa? If groups like that think its rascist they have the freedom to make a game set in Holland and have a black dude go around killing white zombies.

Why? If I saw a game that took place wehre I lived and people of my race were being killed, I wouldn't be disgusted. Killing has been in video games...forever. Why get offended now? Don't you kill black people in GTA? The problem with this matter, is that I just don't care. It's a video game, there's nothing to get mad about, or even any connections to draw. That's my stance.

I couldn't disagree more. It's a game. A zombie/infected-people game. It's called Resident Evil. It's not called Evil White Man Kills Blacks. I think the site purposely said something about RE 5 just to promote itself which was briliant because it apparently worked. What we all should do is just scoff at the proposterous accusations that were made and move on. In fact, this whole thing doesn't even need to be dignified with a response.

I never sided with the site, I'm just saying there are legit reasons a certain sect of people could be offended by it just as much as people crying wolf.

It was matter of time this was going to be an issue lol.

I found it funny how they complained about Africans looked scary in the game before they have even become a zombie.

Of course they look scary. This is horror game. Trying to make things look scary is their goal.

I wonder what they would've said if RE games had black guy in Europe with full of white zombies. Would they have said anything?

I say it is racism to not allow negatively portray Africans or African Americans, but it is ok when Caucasians are allowed to be negatively portrayed. (which has been the case for previous RE games)

I'm getting really tired of this "it shouldn't have been set in Africa because Africa has problems!" bs. Yeah, Africa has some serious issues going on...just like the rest of the world. I fail to see how a fictional game depicting a zombie apocolypse in Africa is going to negatively impact Africa. Its not like people are going to play this game and then say to themselves "hmm...I better not donate food to African charities or support intervention in Darfur anymore. The place is crawling with zombies!". If anything the only way in which this game is harming Africa is by stealing the attention from the Darfur crisis and other problems in Africa and focusing it on a video game.

As for the race issue, its the dumbest thing I've ever seen. The people crying that this game is going to encourage violence against blacks are the same people who said the same thing about GTA:SA. Last I checked there wasn't a spike in white-on-black violence after GTA:SA was released just like there won't be from this game.

When you learn to respond by not pulling statements I've never made from your rear I'll get back to you.

Be a man. You talk about pullin stuff out and you talk about Africa being in this game when it is not set their. You created stuff in thatnarrow mind of yours. You connect this game to Darfur.(a white man shooting zombies in the caribeen(Hati think) has nothing to do with Arabic tribesmen killling blacks in africa. Nothing.

I made a broad geralization about your statement just like you have about this situation, but you don't even no where the game is set and make assumptions about it. A attack a compnay for reasons that have nothing to do with the actual facts.

Bottom line is that you are selectively offended(show me where you have shown concern about WW2 games trivilizing the millions that died in the war. Or did you say one thing about Gun and the Native Americans in it? I bet you never have because you just want to be PC and not actually care about people or view blacks as better then others since only they should never be showed as villians in games.) and being racist or not you deserve whatever flack you get legitimate or not.

Wherehave I said you said something which you did not? I only questioned your selective offenedness of the situtation and your motivation to ignore all the other games in which one could be offended. (who is pulling what out of what know?)

Be a man and see stuff for what it is and don't make connections to things that have nothing to do with one another.

You have no problems seeing what is not their but can't handle it when someone else does it(which i did not I only questioned the reasoning behind the mindless rant). Even when they base it on something and you create it in your head. Maybe you will make something up new this time.

yeah as if the church on Resistance fall of man was not enough. African woman needs to wake up and realize that there were 4 resident evil games before this one and if you go back and play all 4 of those games you might be lucky to come across 1 black zombie if I'm not mistakes he is in RE2 at the very beg when you have to kill that cop that turns into a zombie that helps you out.

Its quite simple then isn't it. If you don't like the premise, don't play the game. I have no problem shooting massive loads of people, or rather ZOMBIES of ANY color. I think it would be stupid to change the location just because some people might find it offensive. So what. People have a right to be offended. But it's when they try to censor things that it becomes an issue. The funny thing is, if the main character were black, it probably wouldn't be an issue. Now THAT is sad.

You're absolutely right. This type of ignorant and irresponsible whistle blowing is exactly what will trivialize the real problems in Africa, not the game itself.

yup capcom is going to have to make a black character as the main character in RE5 just to make everyone happy. As of right now I would love to see Capcom put this woman in the game as a zombie, now that is good thinking. Think of all the attention the game would get then. Hell yeah.

Well here is the REAL racism. In a place filled with black people, the hero has to be white... That makes no sense to me, seems to me would'nt a black hero be more likely since the population is mostly black?

And the thing that REALLY bothers me about RE 5 is this.... IT IS FIVE FRIGGIN GAMES FOR ONE SERIES! IT WAS OLD AFTER RE 3! MAKE SOMETHING NEW AND INTERESTING YOU LAZY AZZ MARKETING BAZTARDZ!

Its just that the virus takes over in an African village and one of the main characters from a past RE game goes to inspect it and this is what happens and so RE5 begins.

Exactly. What do you expect? The government to send in some inexperienced agent to investigate it? They need someone who was has experienced the T-Virus first hand. Jill is too busy being in B-movies and Leon just got out of one hell of a mission rescuing the presidents' daughter and almost becoming a "zombie" himself and probably needs a break. Things are racist still, if you don't think so, you are not honest with yourself.

Well seeing as Capcom has to put up with some much flag over this I guess Leon needs a step brother thats black or something like that where the main character is black in this case or just change the color of the zombies and make them Mexicans I guess.

Actually Capcom needs to come up with something more creative, 5 games for one title is lame. It was lame for Mario, it was lame for Zelda, and it is lame for Resident Evil.

I agree with you completely. If the game took place in Mexico and it was a white guy killing Mexicans you would not get near as much flag. Its all a bunch of pity party with this racist BS.

Actually did'nt that Mexican Mayor a while back complain about one of those generic FPS's? Boy people have short memories... Myself included, I can't remember the game nor the city...

I think your right about that now that I think about it. Even if you made RE take place in china well if its not a dynasty warriors game I guess you would get flag for it. Anyway as more and more time goes on and as more and more games are released with this much media around them as long as it doesn't cost the game company any money it will continue to happen. In my opinion it would be very hard to regulate the creativity of games to certain extent and would be taking away people rights for freedom of expression.

Well here is the REAL racism. In a place filled with black people, the hero has to be white... That makes no sense to me, seems to me would'nt a black hero be more likely since the population is mostly black?

PyscoJuggalo

No, the real racism is that it even matters what color his skin is.

Chris Redfield is the perfect man for the job.

Well they say its unwise to change success and if I was capcom I would keep it the way it is. After all that is what Okami is for.

Funny how judging by your profile's collection page you believe that GTA is the exception

Ah, the Exception is hot cofee. If Laura Croft were getting naked, then I'd probably love some more Tomb Raider games as well. I am perverse before all things... And vulgar too...

I wouldn't say that is entirely true. Blacks tend to be the very vocal on issues of racism, but many others groups are waving those same flags. In California where I live, I can turn on the news any night of the week and there's a hispanic group claiming its racist not to give illegal immigrants drivers licenses/citizenship/whatever. Some Italian group sued HBO over the Sorpranos. Indians were complaining about team mascots.

Let me get this straight...it's perfectly acceptable to kill Asians, Germans, Russians and anyone else, but once you start killing Africans, it's wrong? Ridiculous.

I tipped this would happen sooner or later, but I didn't expect it this soon...

I wouldn't put too much credence into this even being a genuine opinion of the blog writer. To me this just seems to be a cheap ploy at getting some attention and traffic driven to the site. Robio_basic

Yeah, that's pretty much the sentiment I had when I originally posted this, but after thinking about it for a second, it became pretty evident to me that even though this is a small site seemingly doing this to get people talking, the sad truth is that real coverage from professional web sites and television networks is bound to occur, and I'm sure a good number of them will offer the same, uninspired rhetoric.

In any case, I figured it was a valid topic of discussion, and after reading a couple pages with some well thought out and written comments, I have to say I'm gladly surprised that the thread hadn't degenerated by the time I checked back on it. My faith in humanity remains.

Well if any good can come out of this, it does seem that all the traffic to the site has overloaded and killed their blog.

Good job gamers.

*slowly claps* this guy is 100% right.the media doesn't mind if this game was killing like asians or germans(or asian zombies and german zombies) but they do mind when it comes to black people. Hell, you might see Al Sharpen calling this game racist(he looks a guy that things to seriously)

Political correctness has become a joke. You can't do anything without offending some group today.

I think it was because of GRAW 2. The mayor didn't like how their town was being depicted or something.

Well asians germans and russians dont suffer nearly as much as africans do.....AIDS, blood diamonds, you know....But i think

the game will still come out on time, which is sometime in 2010, but whatever. And as far as chris having a black step

brother....I highly doubt that anybody black will help him kill zombies, black people dont get involved in stuff like that cuz they

know that they are always the first to get killed, or die at some point
