Chrono Trigger is a good RPG, not a great one. I dont understand all the overhype. The game was not considered nearly as good when it released as compared to how much people try to hype it up now. Chrono Trigger is easily the most overhyped RPG of all time (followed by FF7).

Chrono Trigger is a very short RPG (Yes, even for its time) and the simplicity of the game is astounding. The best parts of the game imo are the first 2 hours of play and the last 2. (The trial is good as well). However, it is an RPG anybody can pick up and beat. People saying it is difficult make me laugh... It is argueably one of the easiest RPG's EVER made.

Like I said, I do like the game. In fact I have beat the game two times (I went back to play it a couple years ago).

I prefer Chrono Cross. It is a better RPG in every aspect except MAYBE character background. Not that Chrono Trigger has much, but Cross has SO MANY characters it is unreal.

I dont even consider Chrono Trigger the best RPG on the SNES. Breath of Fire 1 and 2, Final Fantasy titles, and a few others are definately up there.

MLBknights58

Having played Breath of Fire 2, I don't really see how it could be considered better than Chrono Trigger. With all due respect, I think the idea that BoF2 is better quite laughable.

-CT has much better visuals. Breath of Fire 2's visuals are charming enough, but it simply doesn't have the production values of CT. The effects, sprites, animations, environments are all more impressive in CT. Not to mention that the game makes better use of color and has more texture and attention to detail. There are a number of RPGs that look better than BoFII on SNES (Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, etc), but not really any that look better than CT.

-CT is paced much better. Breath of Fire 2 has too many fetchquests, too much pointless traveling, and too many moments where the game doesn't give you a good idea of what to do next. CT doesn't have any of these problems. Not to mention that CT is often inventive with its pacing due to its use of the time gimmick.

-CT avoids the annoyance of random encounters whereas Breath of Fire 2's random encounters can get very out of hand.

-CT's environments are more varied and interesting due to the game's time traveling gimmick. By comparison, Breath of Fire 2's environments are far more typical. True, you get to go into a fat lady's body, but the game just turns that into yet another set of tunnels.

-CT doesn't have the abysmal translation that Breath of Fire 2 does. BoF 2's menus are poorly done due to overly shortened item names and the dialogue can sound downright infantile because of the poor translation.

-CT has a more exciting battle system. Breath of Fire 2's battle system is very standard. There's nothing wrong it, but there's nothing about it that particularly stands out. On the other hand, despite the lack of depth, CT's battle system has all the dual and triple techs combined with the ATB system.

-They both have good stories, but CT's story is not hurt by a poor localization.

-One thing I'll give to Breath of Fire 2 is humor. I don't remember CT ever making me laugh whereas BoF2 did several times.

-They are about even as far as characters are concerned. They both have quite charming charactrs.

-CT is easier, but who cares? BoF2 is not that challenging either and I'll take the better-designed game over the more challenging one.

-CT is simplistic all right, but I fail to see how that is a bad thing. Many of the things that people consider masterpices are "simple." Not to mention that Breath of Fire 2 is also simple. The only real depth the game has is the fusion system. Other than that, it has the most basic of battle systems.

-In CT, there are instances where your actions effect the story and you can get multiple endings. In constrast, BoF2 sticks to a much more traditional formula in this respect.

-Breath of Fire 2 absolutely gets murdered as far as music is concerned. Chrono Trigger's soundtrack is full of gems. BoF2's? Not so much.

-Breath of Fire 2 does have more mini-games and what not, so I'll give it props for that.

-CT also murders BoF2 in respect to sidequests. Some of the most inventive uses of time are in CT's sidequests.

-I don't see why the length matters at all. Long/=/good while short/=/bad.

I do agree that Chrono Cross is better than Chrono Trigger, but Breath of Fire is not even in Chrono Trigger's league.

All of the above is completely true about the two games, but I still liked BoF 2 better.

*shrug*  Excellent post though.  I just have such a soft spot for the Breath of Fire games.

I'm really excited to play Breath of Fire 3 and 4. Which one do you guys think is better? From what I've seen, 3 looks deeper, but 4 has the awesome graphics.

[QUOTE="BranKetra"] I was talking about Crono and Magus.Emerald_Warrior

I'd rather see Frog than Chrono or Magus, but any character from Chrono Trigger would be welcome.

Even Lucca and Marle...maybe not

Frog was my favorite in Chrono Trigger, too. He even had his own theme music!

Every one of the main characters does.

My favorite character from CT was Robo. Such an aborable robot. I also really liked Ayla.

Katt was my favorite Breath of Fire 2 character.

Torn between him and Frog as my favorite characters of the game. His boss theme was pretty sweet too.

Yeah, I just had to put the frog pictures up... lol

I liked a lot of the characters from BoF2 but I actually had Kat and Rand up with pictures too, but then I deleted them so I just the frogs remained :P

@ GreySeal

I'm currently replaying BoF IV so as to refresh my memory, as I've forgettin seemingly every single thing about it besides it features Ryu as a protagonist yet again.

I can say through my progress so far that I like BoF III better for numerous reasons, but I believe I need to hold back the info until you play it yourself.  But IV does have a wonderful art style, and everything animates very well.

Although these 2 step random encounters certainly haven't aged well..

But. to answer the question, I liked III better, and feel it is the best in the series.

Good picks based off of overall gameplay, storyline, and character progression.

high-five.jpg.

High five for Breath of Fire love.  Always seems to be overlooked when it comes to SNES RPG's.  Although a lot of the complaints levied against it are very legitimate and even bother the hell outta me.

But dat charm... BoF is so charming.

Yeah, it's easily one of the best looking games on PS1. I was actually surprised that a Breath of Fire game could be top-tier visually.

From what I've heard in this thread and other places, Breath of Fire III does seem to be the better overall package tho.

A shame. Not a fan of those click-a-dot-to-go-to-the-next-location maps. I mean, I'll tolerate them, but a seamless world or an overworld map is always preferable. One of the things I liked about Breath of Fire II is that the overworld map is huge. I do wish they would have given me a compass tho.

Yes! Chrono Trigger was so well designed that it puts all modern RPGs to shame. Everything just flows perfectly in that game. The part in the game that it hit me of how awesome it was, was when I had reached the trial scene. It shows the all wrong things you had done leading up to that event. How you had kidnapped the queen and things like if you had stolen the meat in the carnival you get called out on that. Either way your going the jury is going to find you guilty but I always tried to do as little things wrong as possible to see if I could win the trial on multiple playthroughs of this game.

Yep, exactly. Then like me, you will probably love 3. More charm and BoF RPG classical greatness... However, 4 is definatley a huge decline for me. It isnt the art or the play style, it is exactly what you described. Everything after 3 just isnt BoF to me, whether they are decent or not.

The first 3 were and are my favorite 3 by no comparable margin.

Now that I feel that we've got all our love for BoF out in the air, how about we outline some negatives for the perspective player eh?

The pacing in the Breath of Fire games is incredibly inconsistent.  Number 2 is the biggest offender perhaps, as the 2nd act of the game is so fantastic you wonder why the 1st act was as sluggish as it was. Not to mention the translation almost makes the game a walkthrough must unless you're dilligent enough to sink in time to wonder what the goal of your party actually is at the moment.  3 suffers from this problem as well, as the first section of the game before it picks up entirely wears out its welcome.  With how fluid and swiftly the 2nd acts of these games are you really begin to wonder why Capcom chose to make the first quarter sometimes more of the game more or less a fetch quest with far too many random encounters.. which leads me into my second issue.

The random encounter rate flirts with the dangerous line of tolerable to downright frustrating.  Inflating playtimes and overlevelling your characters are a big guarantee when playing BoF 2 and 3.  Given the amount of backtracking required, especially in 2 (oh my god the backtracking in BoF 2 made me want to punch a baby) the random encounter rate is far too high.  3 remedies this quite substantially however, but given the maze like, dead end filled design of the dungeons and sometimes the vagueness of the objectives at hand (again translation can play a part here) you spend far too much time entering familiar encounters.  Although the seamless transition to battle in BoF 3 is really, REALLY refreshing.  It is reminiscent of Chrono Trigger actually, but not quite the same.

Probably my two biggest pet peeves with my favorites, II and III.

I didn't play it until it came out on the DS but man, I was still extremely impressed when I played through it.  They just don't make games like this anymore.  Great graphics, gameplay, sound, story, multiple endings, and characters.  The only thing I didn't like about the game is that it could have been more challenging.

I think I'm one of the very few people that thought it was challenging enough. Yes, it's a cakewalk much of the time and I do wish they would have upped the stats of some of the normal enemies, but some of bosses are pretty challenging, most notably Lavos. I had to grind quite a bit to beat him.

In any case, Trigger is noticeably more challenging than Cross. Even though Chrono Cross is my favorite RPG ever and perhaps my favorite game ever, it was too easy.

I didn't play it until it came out on the DS but man, I was still extremely impressed when I played through it.  They just don't make games like this anymore.  Great graphics, gameplay, sound, story, multiple endings, and characters.  The only thing I didn't like about the game is that it could have been more challenging.

GreySeal9

I think I'm one of the very few people that thought it was challenging enough. Yes, it's a cakewalk much of the time and I do wish they would have upped the stats of some of the normal enemies, but some of bosses are pretty challenging, most notably Lavos. I had to grind quite a bit to beat him.

In any case, Trigger is noticeably more challenging than Cross. Even though Chrono Cross is my favorite RPG ever and perhaps my favorite game ever, it was too easy.

Yeah Lavos was probably the hardest boss in the game but other than that, they were easy.  But if this game were to be challenging in a in a trial-and-error way like Demon's Souls, then it wouldn't have been as fun so I really don't care about it that much.  That's the only issue I have with the game.

Yeah. They should have given the enemies better stats. That would have increased the difficulty without sucking out the fun.

I do remember fighting that boss, but for some reason I don't remember how hard it was. What was its attack pattern?

MLBknights58

I agree with these points.

However, call me a masochist, but I actually like the backtracking.... for some reason it feels a little more genuine to me, and makes that "light bulb" moment where you figure out where you are supposed to go all that much better. Also, overleveled? lol.... I am in ALL RPG's because I have this weird OCD thing with RPG's where I have to have the best gear, spells, items, etc. before moving to the next area.... That gold town in BoF2... oh my god I still have nightmares :P However, gold slimes helped a lot. Did you find the gold bar or did you buy it? Now THAT is a grind... lol

Watching that footage makes me want to fire up some Chrono Trigger, but I must have self-restraint and finish some more games in my backlog.

Anyway, since this thread is called "Let's talk about Chrono Trigger," I'm going to share some of my favorite things about the game.

Favorite Character:

Robo

Favorite Song:

Lucca's Theme

Awesome guitar arrangement of it.

I loved how they made that song the victory theme in Chrono Cross.

Favorite era:

The desolate future:

Yeah it makes me want to dig out the DS version that's around here somewhere. But I'm near the end of Tomb Raider.

The DS version, due to the extra content, let me get each character to level ** after 3 playthroughs. I finally feel like I did all I could in the game, though I couldn't care less about the monster arena (sadly, it's the only place they added Battle 2).

I didn't think the enw dungeons were boring. They were decent. Far form the best parts of the game but decent.

I've really enjoyed it a lot, it's a great game.
