Now there are numerous speculations out there that both PS4 and the next Xbox won't play used games because it'll lock your games to either your account or your console. Now these scenarios are both really greedy ideas that don't help gamers in any way but if you were to decide, which would you choose??? Have your game locked to your account? or your console???

Well I'm on my third 360 so having them locked to a single console would be ridiculous. That means when your console is gone so are your games so I can't see that happening. XBLA games are already tied to your account so I could see something similar happening to retail games in that aspect. I wouldn't be greatly shocked to be completely honest. But shutting out the used market and all of that.... I would probably just stay retro/ PC gaming then. Sometimes the console market thinks its the only game in town, they would be in for a rude awakening sales wise if they keep on getting too big for their britches like they are.

I won't buy them then.

Instead I'll just buy a Wii-U and 360 and be set.

I don't care about that, I buy new and don't sell games and I would actually welcome games tied to account if you can download them to your console, just like you can on Steam

The Wii's Virtual Console locks it to the console... and I think that is one of the most asinine things ever. Not only are you SOL when your console stops working, but you can't login at your friends house and play the game there. I have refused to ever support the VC. And I won't buy a console that does not support used games.

Hahaha.. like that's a bad thing. Console gamers are complaining about their used games being taken away when they contribute nothing to the developers and the gaming industry, and they pray every night that the graphics get better but they want the cost of consoles to remain extremely low for better hardware. A bunch of hypocrites if you ask me and it's irritating how people want something for nothing. I am willing to bet that even if they go along with the locked anti-used games PS4 and Xbox 720, people will still buy it. Just like how they pay for Xbox Live, without much complaint. Or the fact that Call of Duty series is still the best-selling games even though they're recycled. And the cycle continues... people will get over it. Wallets will open, purses will be emptied. Looking at you soccer moms.

I buy my games new and don't sell them and I would refuse to buy any console who offered either option, why would I choose to limit my gaming when I could just go with the Wii-U or PC gaming or go retro?! Besides someone might work out a way to hack them open anyway, hopefully

If your games are locked to your console. You have 30 games then your console dies. Your out of luck. If they are going to lock your games lock them to the account.

Megavideogamer

This is actually a misnomer, if the games are tied to your account, you can recover the licenses through Xbox Live. I downloaded tons of games and I was able to get them again after I imported the licenses over. They can't take the product away from you, it's a scare tactic used by people that don't like digital distribution methods.

I guess I'd rather have it locked to my account, but that still sucks since my brother and I share games. Neither option sounds very appealing, so I think I'll just pass on any systems that do this.

Not unless either... 1. You're banned, or 2. They completely removed the item(s) from the servers (in fact, some of the early items I forgot I even downloaded are no longer available, even through my download history, in addition to the Fable 2 glitch (which is why I will never delete it even though I don't like the game)) In fact, Sony has also done it....at least temporarily.

I did notice that as well as I tried to redownload a arcade game that had been removed from the marketplace. I contacted Microsoft and they gave me a DL code and I was able to get the game back. Did you call them?

No....I don't even know what they were. They just say "Item is no longer available". Keep in mind that this was from the very early days of the Xbox 360. (Think Sonic 06.)

I will be sticking with my PS3/Wii/360 throughout all of next gen. I will pick up those machines only if they have amazed me. With all this talk of locking used games out or to an account, I'll most likely wait and save up for my PS5 or Ninty Ultra Nes.

Good way to lose sales, take away even more from your consumer base. Well done. Well done indeed.

I dont think the industry is at the stage where it can lock stuff to accounts or consoles yet. Theres still too much that can go wrong which leaves the technology useless. I heard rumours that the next gen machines will need a permanant always on internet connection to play your games. Surely someone at Sony must remember what happened when the servers got hacked and everything got turned off for 2 months. If I had a console i couldn't use for 2 months because someone at the other end had turned off the connection I'd be furious. I'll buy into the next gen market of no used games if the console comes free. I'll buy into the next gen market of an always there internet connection to play the games if the manufacturer of the console supplies the always on internet connection at my end and guarantees it will be there 100% of the time.

Seems to me the games industry is intent on self destruction with stupid ideas like this. You wouldnt buy a new car if the manufacturer told you u cant sell it later on if u want to so why would you pay for games with the same limits? Its just a case of greedy devs/publishers wanting more money and total control over us and me personally im not having it, i'd rather miss out on a generation than give in to such bully boy tactics from jumped up developers and publishers.

If this does indeed happen i only hope there are many more people that think like me and give these companies the middle finger and watch them go out of business through their own greediness.

Tactics like this REALLY get my back up in a big way so to hell with them all they can all go under as far as im concerned:evil::evil:

You do realize that publishers already get paid by the retailers by shipping copies of their games, right? Plus they don't exactly get the full $60 off of each new copy being sold.

That would be the worst couple of decisions in the history of gaming. There's no way I can see this happening with the masses of people, including myself, that disagree with the idea. That'd lose so much money because I couldn't see myself buying a console that does this.

I don't see microsoft or sony doing this at luanch of their new systems. Instead I think they'll wait until later in the console life span to implement it. That way people who have already invested in their systems will have no other option but to support it.

I will not support any company that does this. I still buy gamecube xbox and ps2 games. I can't afford every game I want at full price when they come out.

I've never pirated anything not even music. But if they lock out used games I'm turning to piracy.

Make sure you buy games from developers who don't have any kind of attempted anti-piracy though. That way you will send a message to other developers. I don't pirate games because I consider it too much of a risk. The risk is small but still there. However i don't like developers who make me jump through hoops when installing games or try to tell me what I can and can't do with the games I buy.

The games that made many developers the success they are today had no anti-piracy, many didn't even have a cd check. Not that it's hard to find a no-cd patch, it's just a hassle for a paying customer but it's not for pirates because no-cd patches come with the download.

It wasn't always more of a hassle for the paying consumer to install games than the pirate. UT for example you just installed and played, the way it should be and Epic are the company they are today because of the success of this game. I could give numerous other examples of developers who started like this and some still do it this way today but often it's only the smaller ones. I try to support them as much as possible.

I'd probably tolerate a combo of both as long as license exchanges are liberal enough.

For example, if it were strictly tied to your account it would be a no go, since I'm not buying four copies of a game so everyone in the family could play.

Likewise, if tied to a console I personally couldn't migrate to another console, which would also be a no go.

As it exists right now, XBL content is tied to both, allowing for other people to play the content on the machine of origin and you to enjoy the content on more than one machine with your account, but the license exchanges are too stringent imo.

I think it's only once a year that they let you change licenses from one machine to another. I'd like to see the time restriction removed and replaced by a number of machines restriction instead, i.e., you can license this content to five machines total, allowing for simultaneous licensing in case you have more than one shared machine in your house.

I can't get behind this mindset whatsoever. I fail to see how anything that Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo can do would justify this action. I can understand the frustration, don't get me wrong, but this is a response based on entitlement as if they owe you something. I have resigned to take the stance that if Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo decide to implement anything that I abhor then I will simply vote with my wallet. That is really the only thing that anyone can do that will make a difference.

I do not like the sound of this one bit.

Locking media to an account is one thing, like PSN or xbox live. Locking games to specific consoles is too much because it will cause unnecessary problems when the console inevitably stops working.

I wouldn't be surprised if it came to light that the console makers themselves spread the rumor in order to gauge the game community's response to the possibility...

Not no matter what.

A poor gamer buying a used copy of a game at a garage sale for 25% of what it cost new in the store probably helps the industry more than harms it.

Why?

The buyer is getting a good deal, saving money and staying invested in a hobby that might otherwise be too expensive until they can afford to buy new games again, helping the industry. What's more, he is paying a fellow gamer who might very likely use the money to purchase a new game also helping the industry. Further, that seller is not stuck with games he dislikes, lessening the chance he will abandon a hobby that has proven to be a poor value for his entertainment dollar, which yet again helps the industry.

Now I agree going to Gamestop and paying $18 for a used game that costs $20 new probably does hurt the industry more than it helps it for several reasons.

Not only are all of the above positive benefits of the used market mitigated by the crappier deal, but the way GS pushes used vs. new puts it in direct competition with the new games, and the sale of one is largely at the expense of the other, simply to give GS higher margins. They want you to return the new game you bought two days ago, and they probably won't ask many questions, because they can give you a pittance relative to what they give the publisher and turn around and sell it for almost full price.
