N64-Console-Set.jpg

Dreamcast-Console-Set.jpg

Another Dreamcast console comparison, this time with the N64. The Dreamcast was technically a sixth gen console, but it was discontinued around the same time as the N64, so the N64 provided all of Nintendo's competition against it.

The consoles are somewhat similar; both have four controller ports, and both controllers have only one stick, which gives them very similar styles of FPS's.

However, the Dreamcast used a disk system. The N64 used cartridges.

Consider the following when voting:

  • Which console had higher quality games?
  • Which one had a better controller?
  • How expensive is each console/ games?

This is a very easy decision for me, unlike the Dreamcast vs. XBox thread which was a close call for me.

Dreamcast all the way. Fantastic game library, with lots of unique titles, and pretty much perfect arcade ports. And Sega Net was the first easily accessible, popular and widely used online console gaming network out there. Yeah, there was Saturn Link, but I wouldn't call that a healthy online gaming community outside of Japan.

With the N64, the controller really makes the console take a big hit, in my book. That awkward hunk of junk is one of the worst designed controllers ever made. Not THE worst, but it's up there.

Dreamcast, both for the games and the controller. The price is even more obvious.

This is a very tough decision for me seeing how the Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast are my number 2 and 3 favorite consoles of all time, respectively. By a small margin, I choose the N64 just because there are slightly more games I like on it than the Dreamcast. Not only that, but their are three N64 games in my top 10-games of all time and only two Dreamcast games (regardless of Shenmue being my #1 game of all time). I also owe the N64 for turning me into the hardcore video game fanatic I am today, so the Nintendo 64 gets my vote between the two.

Wow this is a tough one!! The n64 gave me and my friends so many good memories in multiplayer games whereas the DC had the cleanest crispest graphics i'd ever seen at the time and the games were like nothin i'd played before like the quirky fishing games with the rod controller and the genuinely bizarre Seaman and many more like it.

If i had to choose it would have to be the Segendo Dream 64:D

In specs terms?

Dreamcast ate the 64 alive.

In games?

I liked 64's games better personally.

The best thing, though, would be if Nintendo and Sega (and Rare) joined forces and overthrew that tyrant PS2... :P

The DC by quite a margin. The N64 doesn't really hold a candle to the DC unless you really love Mario or Zelda games.

mmm... this is a toughie. Both consoles have terrible controllers. The Dreamcast is loud and more prone to failure but has better graphics. A lot of N64 games suffer from framerate issues and low draw distance. Many dreamcast games were ported over to other consoles... I'm going to say it's a tie, if the N64 had a few RPGs I would have chosen it over the Dreamcast, but it really doesn't. so yeah, a tie

DC hands down. The only games I really liked on the N64 were Goldeneye, Mario 64, Rayman 2, and Rush 2049... And the last 2 are also on the DC. DC has some excellent fighters, racers, shmups, and games like Shenmue, Seaman, and Jet Grind Radio which are in other genres. As for controllers, both weren't anything great, but the N64 controller handled its FPS games better than the DC controller handled its FPS games (then again, you can just get a DC mouse and keyboard).

I'd go with the DC. While the N64 had some really high quality in some titles, there were only but so many for me personally. I think over time I just found more value in the DC.

I've only played soul calibur, sonic adventure, and UT on the dreamcast so I would be bias to favor the n64 library which I know very well, where as the dreamcast library i dont have much knowledge about.

Yeah, that sort of goes the same way for me as well, though over the years I´ve became a lot more familiar with the N64 library but I still feel the DC was a bit better in the games department tbh.

The N64 because it's library is a bit more varied in my opinion, unless you like fighting games and RPGs, that is, then the Dreamcast is your best bet.

I'm just not a huge fan of those genres.

The Nintendo 64 is better. 32.5 Million sold during it's lifetime. Losing to the Playstation 103.5 million. CD-Rom vs Cartridge based media. 5th era battle Nintendo vs Sony

The Sega Dreamcast is a 128 bit console with on-line capabilities The interesting Dreamcast controller which was the first to try the second screen experiment. The Dreamcast VMU which provided possible second screen interaction. The VMU screen was very primitive. Black and white. But the concept of having the second screen via the VMU on the dreamcast controller was a Sega innovation. Long before the Wii U tried it. or Even before the Nintendo Gamecube and Gameboy advance combo.

The Dreamcast controller and the Nintendo 64 controller were similiar in that they were large, and with a single analog stick. And with the Memory Card slots in the controller instead of the console. Unlike the Playstations

Dreamcast and N64 large controllers were unweidy to a point. Sega was groundbreaking with the Dreamcast. But The use of CD-Rom in the Dreamcast is unusual When Playstation 2 and Xbox used DVD Roms. Even the Gamecube used mini DVD Roms. Sega used CD roms abeit Modified CD-Roms

The N64 is better Sega Dreamcast was just ahead of it's time which is a shame Sega had so good ideas with this console which seems to have inspired Nintendo and the Wii U.

N64 is better but just barely.

Well what about N64 v.s. PS1? That's 64 bits vs 32 bit, and I'm sure most people prefer the ps1.

exactly. n64 was made worthwhile by it's wrestling games and also it's shooters, but they haven't really stood the test of time. wrestling games did though

yeah I know that Quest 64 was pretty trash but N64 had the best FPS library at the time, amazing platformers such as DK, mario, banjo, kirby, yoshi and conker, a amazing fighter in smashbros and KI Gold, and amazing adventure games in Zelda Ocarina of Time and Majoras's mask, Pokemon stadium 1 + 2 and I beleive pokemon to be the best strategy based RPG ever, 2 amazing racers in Diddy Kong racing and mario kart64, Star fox 64 and the first Paper mario.

Dreamcast was not ahead of its time, just overhyped by hardcore Sega fans because it was Segas last attempt into the console business.

N64 revolutionized 3D graphics on consoles and has very innovative and unique games, while the Dreamcast did not that much for the gaming industry.

It's not even close.

PS1 and Saturn had good (for the time) 3D graphics a year-plus before the 64. Try again.

N64.  It depends on how you mean better.  Do you mean better for its time, or better now?  If we are talking about now, then the medal would go to N64.  If we are talking about for its time, then the medal would go to Dreamcast.  Games like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and others do not stand the test of time.  Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of time, Blast Corps, Pilotwings 64, F-Zero X, and Banjo Kazooie still stand up pretty well besides the graphics.  People can get better versions of Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter on other platforms.

I will say that the Dreamcast was better for its time.  It had online capabilities.  The system also had the best launch games out of any console to ever come out.  To have gameslike Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, House of the Dead 2, and Soul Calibur was a pretty good deal at launch.  Most of the games available on Dreamcast in this day and age are available elsewhere.  Some cult classics like Power Stone and Shenmue are missing, but there is not really a huge reason to pick up a Dreamcast in this day and age.  The same could be said for quite a few consoles.

I would definitely say that's the exact opposite. The N64 was a huge deal back then, pumping out diamonds after diamonds thanks to Nintendo and Rare's exclusives. But today? Most of its games are an unplayable mess thanks to a horrible framerate and clunky controls, not to mention that most of its gems are available elswere.

But, I don't see the relevance of exclusivity outside of the thread subject. I mean, i'm the first to say that i'll judge a system's worth by its exclusive count, but this is about the N64's and the Dreamcast's library of games.

And i can't play Dead or Alive 2, Soul Calibur (which has a huge chunk of exclusive content on the DC), Elemental Gimmick Gear, Project Justice, etc. on a N64, neither can i play the games you mentioned on a Dreamcast. That's the only thing relevant here.

Because if you go on that road, then no console is worth owning. You can play everything on a decent PC, minus the 7th gen.

The Dreamcast had more creative offbeat games and it actually had a few RPGs, but some of the games on the 64 are the stuff of legend. So my verdict is: I'm not sure. :?

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are clunkier than anything on N64.  I am pretty sure Soul Calibur 2 trumps the second.  There are a lot N64 games people still cannot play.  Games like Goldeneye, Blast Corps, Donkey Kong 64, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct, Turok 1 and 2, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour, Rush 2, Rogue Squandron, Star Wars Pod Racer. and so on.  Some of these games will never come because Microsoft does not care about Rare's legacy.  This is why most of the people behind their greatest games left the company.  The other titles would be a pain in the butt to to bring.  There is a huge dispute as to the rights of the original Goldeneye game.  Microsoft, Nintendo, and Activision will fight each other to the death on that one.  Eurocom no longer exists, and I doubt 2K  would want to find a developer to port a Duke Nukem game that no one really knew about in the first place.  The Star Wars games belong to Lucas Arts

Sega has released Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Crazy Taxi, Space Channel 5 part 2, and Jet Set Radio on newer systems.  Shenmue has been heavily rumored for some time now, so those games will definitely come out one way or another.  Soul Calibur 1 was already ported to 360, and I doubt Namco will port the DC version of that game anywhere.  Fighting games rarely see collections these days, so I doubt you will see Tecmo port Dead or Alive 2 anywhere.  The company could do what Sega did by releasing games based off hardware.  Sega just released the Sonic fighting game and Virtua Fighter 2 on console networks not too long ago.  I doubt that Tecmo will do the same.  The company is too busy porting over Ninja Gaiden games to every platform it can.  I am surprised Razor's Edge has not been announced for Vita yet.

He's not at all wrong about the N64 doing more for the gaming industry than the Dreamcast.

Some of the most important games of all time are on the N64. The Dreamcast? Not so much.

I know there was 3D graphics on consoles since the Atari 2600, but it looks ugly to me. I hate naked 3D graphics without effects. So the N64 set a new standart for console 3D graphics in my opinion. And to be honestly, it was in its time the much more impressive system than the Dreamcast was.

Just because I said something negative about the Dreamcast is a laughable reason to call me a troll, you ******* psycho. You're probably the rudest person on this board.

Saturn didn't have "naked" 3D graphics. It had fully 3D graphics, with textures.

N64, if the Dreamcast actually lived out it's lifespan to around 2004-2005 then Dreamcast would of been the easy answer.
