Nice try, but Halo 2 won multiplayer GOTY here. (Beating out UT2K4 mind you) ;)
Yeah but theres one problem, COD4's multiplayer trumps it in every fashion imaginable.
Well, of course it does silly. Halo 2 came out in 2004. :P
Seriously though, I don't think it's fair to be making those assumptions since Call of Duty 4 isn't even out. That is unless you already have a copy of the game and have played its online component extensively. Have you?

I was referring more to the entire game. Making the judgement (after playing a beta) that Call of Duty 4's MP will "trump Halo 3's MP in every fashion imaginable" seems rather brash when you consider the amount of praise Halo 3's MP has received.

Well, not realy IMO because really the multplayer can only be better, and get this COD4 even has clans to go along with its extremely deep rpg-like class system.

I would bea bit surprised if COD4 manages to outdo Halo 3. Mostly because I think both will have great singleplayers and multiplayers, but what really sets Halo 3 apart from any other game out there, are the saved films, screenshot editing, bungie.net implementation, and forge features. It really shows the amount of money and resources that were available to the Halo 3 development team.Like matchamking, I think these features will be exclusive to Halo for years to come for those very reasons.
For some reason, even though I stood in line to get the game at midnight, and really enjoy it, I just don't want to see Halo 3 come out on top. I'd rather it went to a game that did something new. Halo 3 does everything right, I've got no complaints there, I'd just rather see a game that is doing something new, even if it is a sequel, take the cake.
I really thought that the save game films, screenshots, and the forge would really change things, but I don't see them really contributing to the game's longevity. Maybe that is just because the Gamespot GGD Halo 3 hype died down soon after the launch... right around when the Orange Box came out. I don't know, I like Halo 3 a lot, but I haven't nerded out with it on the same intense level as Halo 2. Maybe that is just a personal problem of mine though, and not a inherent problem with the game.rragnaar
Well, I for one got much more value out of Halo 3 than TOB (or any other fps released this year for that matter). Portal and Episode 2 took about 10 hours to complete, and TF2 really isn't my cup of tea, while I'm over 80 hours into Halo 3, and still counting.
It felt like it was tailored for the console crowd that hadn't experienced HL2 yet, not for me (what happened to the other box, I believe it was called "The Black Box" and was supposed to contain only the new parts of TOB?). I don't count bundling older installments of a series as adding value. Still, I can easily see why TOB would deserve to be GOTY.
TBH if there's one game I don't want to see winning GOTY based on my own experiences it's CoD4. The singleplayer is simply CoD 3 all over again, at least that's the impression I got from the demo, and even if the multiplayer is amazing I believe a true GOTY should win the reward for being a complete package, not only for a certain part of the game. That's why we have the "multiplayer GOTY" reward.

I think the potential candidates are:
The Orange Box
Halo 3
Bioshock
Mass Effect
But based on my predictions and from the seemingly many rewards and a high rating that it got here from Gamespot, it seems that The Orange Box has the upper hand on the competition with Halo 3 just behind it in terms of Value
[QUOTE="GodModeEnabled"]Rock Band looks like Guitar Hero for little girls and kids. Real men play Guitar Hero, !@#$ Rock Band! AlexN
Normally I don't even like to interject on threads like this, but this particular post made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. 'Scuse me, son. Try picking up the drums in Rock Band on any difficulty medium or higher and see how well you do. Then talk to me about "little girls and kids." Kay? Thxbye.
o_0 To be honest you're the only reviewer I really trust and appreciate on this site and I always check out your reviews so im little shocked to "offend" you so much with my preference in games between the two music titles, maybe my statement was a little harsh so I apologize. If the setlist wasnt so horrible id probably pick up the game. I have nothing against drummers either seeing as how I play in real life guitar bass and drums. I find this game horribly bogged down by its top 40 setlist of radio friendly crap and pop.If it's just a matter of you not liking the tracklist, I can hardly fault you for that. I do like the tracklist, but I can see why someone wouldn't. However, I take a great deal of exception to the elitist attitude of any game being "for little girls" because another game happens to be harder. It's just a crappy attitude, if you ask me. Dislike a game on its own merits, not because you don't think it's "hardcore" enough or whatever.AlexNNah im actually not like that at all, I just made my original comment because I love guitar hero and detest most radio friendly songs and the setlist in rock band. My apologies for the confusion. I may come off as a bit of an elitist gamer beause I am to some degree, I love stuff that challenges me and dislike most easier games because they bore me thats why after following a game like say "phantom hourglass" for example I decided to pass on it for its lack of difficulty. I dont actually see the games as lesser titles or whatever im just as ass who shouldnt drink and post so much. Does the Guitar Hero xplorer controller (360) work with rock band by chance? If I dont have to pay $150 for the game I might snag it anyways.

Amen, time to go play some wii sports.
Its was 10games for nomination right?
Lets think here
Halo 3...Its Halo, Duh. I would say the most solid shooter ever. Doesn't really stand out remarkably in any area but extremely solid on every end(Except in Sound which is arguable one of the greatest if not the greatest soundtracks ever) But its like, Good Single Player, System Coop, 4Online Coop, Party Mode, Matchmaking, Mini editor, Tons of modes. Not to mention I would say fantastic weapon balance...Easily UT Quality which is the best type of remark I can give.
World in Conflict...One of the best RTS in years. This years Dawn of War or Company of Heroes. I haven't played it or followed it but everyone I know raves on about it.
Half Life OB...All time Greatest Value? Not to mention 3 highly different unique games(I don't think we can count HL and Ep 1 as new hehe
MAss Effect...RPG Of the Year most likely. Kotor Team behind it, Looks great, looks like it plays great, tons of content, etc
Bioshock...Best Writing and Art Style in a very long time.
Forza 2...Currently the best Racing Sim out there. Doesn't have the best graphics but it exceeds in every other area and easily the best community
God of War 2..I have not played it at all. But I think it will be nom
Uncharted...Looks fantastic. Its NG through So It will definitely need a play through first. Since I can not say any of thier other games have ever been GOTY material and Im going smainly by since it is my love for action games being the reason it is up here lol.
Mario Galaxy...Here I think we could have the GOTY.
Crysis...No comment...melts my computer
Personally I think Uncharted or Crysis should be removed and replaced with The Witcher:P I WANT TO BELIEVE!!!
seriously no one is giving COD4 a good enough shot, I'm stunned.HiResDes

Stop hyping CoD4, let it take everyone by surprise :P
Seriously I think this will turn out to be the best CoD yet, but with new IP's and a strong competition of FPS' everywhere you see. I think Mass Effect, SMG, and Rock will benefit from it. Some people are overlooking UT III, it could get best multiplayer game of the year.

I didn't realize that was gonna make it out by the end of the year, lol. I totally forgot about it.

The PS3 version won't make it this year, but the PC is set to release alongside Mass Effect andUncharted :o
Crysis, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Bioshock, or maybe....UT3.
Crysis will at least win technical graphics, maybe PC game, and maybe GOTY for the open ended gameplay, decent AI, and amazing graphics.
Assissin's Creed will probably win adventure game of the year, and maybe Xbox 360 or overall GOTY because of the REALLY open-ended gameplay, graphics, and story.
Mass Effect may also win adventure game of the year, and maybe Xbox 360 or overall for the open-ended gameplay (again), graphics, story, and facial animation.
Bioshock may win Xbox 360 GOTY, PC GOTY, overall GOTY, artistic graphics, or even adventure GOTY because of the atmosphere, sort of open-ended gameplay, and the story.
UT3 has a good chance for MP GOTY, PC GOTY, and maybe overall GOTY because of it's HUGE MP fanbase, huge maps, large amount of maps, graphics, decent SP, but mostly just because it has a very large and impressive MP feature.

If the Orange Box counts, probably that. If not, Halo 3, thus-far.MaaarrrzI don't think it does. GOTY is not really about value, it is about the quality of a single game. They can give it to Portal, Team Fortress 2, or Episode 2, but lets face it, none of those are going to get it.
How can you even have doubt. Its GS Halo 3 wins everything :P.FlaminDeath
GS has never givin a Halo game game of the year
The last 2 GOTY have been gimmies (at least I knew what they would be), but this year I'm not so sure.Gears and RE4 were easy to pick, they both were awesome and Gears was a new franchise, and RE4 revolutionized the series and the genre.
The Orange Box is good, but it's kind of crazy with so many games in one, but then again the GOTY has to be liked by a lot of people so I think it has a good chance, but it is still crazy especially with Half Life 2 packaged in.
One would think Halo 3 would have a shot, however I don't see the entire GS staff embracing it.
World in Conflict is original, but it seems somewhat esoteric, too esoteric for GOTY.
I wonder if Burning Crusade could have a shot.It is an expansion, and the more I think about it the less likely I think it is.WoW won in 2004 but it was pretty revolutionary and addicting at the time.BC is kind of the same game, but it is an interesting thought.
Now that I think about it, this year is like a rematch of 2004.Halo, Half Life and WoW are all in it.
Bioshock didn't get a super high score like some of the other games (but with the gimped rating system it is harder to tell what the score means). That said, I think I could see Bioshock making a run, having a good story, original setting, interesting game play and universal appeal.
Then you got all the crap yet to come out, Crysis, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, and Mario among other have a shot.
There is my extend analysis.
For those who skip it, I think this is a tough year to pick and a bunch of games haven't come out yet, but here's the ones that I think have the best shot at it:
1.Orange Box
2.Bioshock
3.Halo 3
4.Wow
5.World in Conflict
Out of the games that haven't come out yet (let's just say they all get 9.5s) I'd say the ones that have the best shots at winning are:
1.Assassins Creed
2.Mario
3.Mass Effect
4.Crysis
5.Rock Band
Maybe if Call of Duty 4 is really freaking good, it could make a run, but I think it is hard for pure FPS to win.Serious Sam was the last one to win I think, and that was when PC and console was separate. Same deal with Crysis.
Demodocus
I still think Bioshock is the game to beat right now, but Super Mario Galaxy,Assassins Creed or Mass Effect will win it overall, but its hard to say since all the contenders aren't out yet, GS seems to favor original IP's so I think Bioshock, Mass Effect or Assassins Creed have a chance to win it, but like I said before, toughy choice since all games aren't out yet.

Manly-manly-man
You make it sound like open-ended gameplay is inherently superior to linear gameplay, or that it means anything in GOTY awards. Most of the single-player stuff over the past several years for games that won were rather linear...
Anyway, for other stuff, I don't think that Orange Box will win simply because half of the content was released years ago. That plus there's the fact that it's not one game, it's five games - just because it's on a single disc for the console doesn't change the fact that you can buy the games separately on the PC. This theoretically could discount them considering this compilation of games that are separate games elsewhere.
I'm figuring CoD4 and Mass Effect are the most likely choices at this point, but again it's hard to tell until the games are released. People tend to discount games released earlier in the year too, GoW2 was a very good game released over half a year ago. It'll be a finalist but I don't think it'll win.
The GOTY hasnt been released yet (Mass Effect)GodModeEnabled
Agreed. Mario Galaxy comes out next week:P
It's hard to choose at the moment because Crysis, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed and Super Mario Galaxy still haven't been released.
I'd like to see Halo 3 get an award or two, perhaps for the best multiplayer game, and I think it deserves to win the best Xbox 360 game category, even over Mass Effect. I also think Halo 3 deserves to win the best music category. Doubt it'll get GOTY though, simply because it has refined the Halo formula and not necessarily made a massive leap (not that it needed to), such as the one Resident Evil 4 made in the RE series.
I won't be surprised if Mass Effect, Bioshock and the rest get knocked out of GOTY by Crysis. It's still pretty hard to say at this stage though, because there are still a lot of potentials to be released.

The game automatically saves all of the games you have played in the past, you can go to a list, and pick from all of your past games, while in a party of four. While watching this film, everyone can fly around independently, look through anyone's eyes, zoom in, etc. As easily and as quickly as a Madden replay, you can put the game in slow motion, fast forward, pause, skip back a chapter, snap a screenshot that is immediately available to anyone playing on live at the moment, as well as on the bungie website, and even edit a clip of your favorite moment in the game. All the while, your friends can watch and comment on what they are seeing.
I can do all this within 5 seconds of finishing any game. Or in pretty much no time at all if I just want to show someone a past game of mine. I can have my game uploaded to a server for everyone to view and fly around that game environemnt with their own buddies, commenting on my game, just as easily and just as fast.
I've been a PC gamer for overa decade and have not seen anything like it. I never bothered with the whole mod scene to be honest, but somehow I doubt it allows for anything like that. The way Halo does it is about as accessible as it gets for such a function.
Perhaps you haven't experienced saved films. Let me bring you up to speed.

I think Bioshock will win a lot of awards.ASK_Story
Agree with Bioshock winning Best Art Direction.
Anyways here is how I think it should breakdown
Best Graphics: Uncharted...Lushish, vivid, Great textures and everything else
Best Sound: Halo 3...Unquestionably the winner here. The score is just beautiful. (For Licensed then guitar hero 3)
Best Art Direction: Bioshock...Steam Punk 1940's Underwater...just looking fantastic
Best Multiplayer: Halo 3 again. I would definitely give my hats off too it, Really my only complaint is the fact that they dont have public user games where you can have a list. But matchmaking far then makes up for it...Not to mention Coop, Forge, Splitting Ranked and Casual, Dozens of modes.
Best Story. Im going go out on a limb and say Mass Effect. Its going to be strong, well voiced, and overall probably most solid
Best Exp Pack: NWn2 MOTB
Most dissapointing: Heavenly Sword takes the entire cake here.
Genre: Action/Adventure: Uncharted ^_^
Shooter:...I honestly don't know what deserves this...UT3!!! For me atleast
Fighting: VF5 360 Version
Platformer: Mario...Duh
Driving: Forza 2
Puzzle: Puzzle Quest!!!
Music: Rock Bank
Role Playing: The Witcher!!! IT BETTER HAPPEN
Sports: NHL 08
Strategy: World in Conflict
GOTY: Mario Galaxy
