I think Super Mario Galaxy does stand a chance for GOTY along with Halo 3 and Rock Band.

Does The Orange Box qualify? I think it should. Three of the included games are new, and if you want any of the games on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, The Orange Box is the only way to get them.

On a technical level...of course. But I really liked Uncharted's Artstyle too. Crysis's isn't bad...Then again I have only seen the first few hours before the aliens come so it could change. I always like the thought Art Plus Tech for graphics. You need good Art direction just as much as Good Tech. Then again its my opinion ^_^

Not sure. I liked Bioshock and Halo 3, but I can't see either of them being GOTY. Orange Box really doesn't count since it's just HL 2 repackaged. Not sure. There's no clear cut contender this year.

Well, you said BioShock should win Best Graphics, Artistic, so I assumed this was referring to the technical aspect. I doubt GameSpot will decide to hand out two art-styIe awards and zero technical.

While they are available seperately over Steam, you cannot get them seperately on the Xbox 360 or PS3.

And they were reviewed together too. GameSpot does not have seperate reviews for Episode 2, TF2, or Portal.

And episode one,but again, most of those titles- with the exception of episode 2 -have already been released more than a year ago.

Yeah, The Orange Box is going to be a serious GOTY contender at every major game publication...and what's wrong with that? It might even encourage other developers to follow Valve's format. Besides, Half-Life has always used different games as its multiplayer component (Team Fortress Classic, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, and now Team Fortress 2), why does it matter if it's called differently? What really matters is that straight of the box you're getting high quality single-player, multiplayer, and...erm...Portal.

Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal are all brand-new, previously unreleased games. Saying that The Orange Box is "Half-Life 2 repackaged" is a false statement as most of the titles are new.

They are reviewing a product, as you said they cant buy them seperately on the 360 so it has to be reviewed as one package. But in an award going out to individual games I would see it as unfair for one game to win cause it had 5 games in it.

I'm tempted to give Orange Box GOTY simply because it feels like one of the few games over the last eleven months that doesn't have intentions of nickel and diming me after I've already paid AMPLE money for a video game. There needs to be a new GOTY category called the "Bang For Your Buck Award," where they give a game an award based on sheer value. I believe TOB would win this category hands down, completely uncontested.

On the other hand, it could be a viable contender strictly on merit -- Half Life 2 was GOTY for many sites and publications when it released, and you get that game, two expansions, an online shooter, and a puzzle game in TOB.

I will say that, having beaten Portal, I'm a little perplexed at what all the hype was about -- it's short, it's easy, and I found it be more charming than challenging, and more than a bit light on content. I walked away feeling like it's more of a tech demo than a game proper. But when you consider it as only a part of a much larger whole, this is easily forgiven.

It's not a false statement. It is HL 2 repackaged with additional content/expansions, but the core game is HL 2.That is the only full game in the box, the rest are either additional content such as episode one/two or unique mods such as portal.Other games have done similarwith gold editions that include the main game plusexpansions.

I'm not bashing it, I love HL 2. My favorite game of last gen. But GOTY typically is reservedfor a new and original game, not a variation of a pre-existing game.

That is how I see it as well.  Orange Box is incredible, and I'd say it is one of the few 'no brainer' purchases to have come out in the last year, but I think it would be a shame to see it take GOTY.  It would be like saying that Grind House should win best picture this year because it has two movies for the price of one. (I realize that analogy doesn't hold up under deep scrutiny, but you get my point I hope)

Obviously this is something not everyone is going to agree with, but I don't think Orange Box deserves GOTY when it is up against games that are high quality, and are composed entirely of material we haven't played yet.  I agree with Shame-Us, it definitely deserves an award for best deal of the year, but GOTY seems like it should be reserved for new releases.

Gold Editions always contain games that have all been previously released. Half-Life 2 Game of the Year is Half-Life 2 repackaged. The Orange Box is different. On the PC side, you get three new games, on the console side everything is new. What constitutes a full game? Heavenly Sword is supposedly a full game, yet it's basically the same lenght as Episode Two which is the best Half-Life to date. The Episodes aren't mere expansion packs in the true sense of the word, they're not some additional content that you can disregard, they're basically Half-Life 3 divided into three chunks, they're new games that continue the storyline and will offer its conclusion.

Are you calling Portal a mod? That's insulting to such a great game. It certainly is not a mod, and neither is Team Fortress 2, which in my opinion is the most well rounded and complete multiplayer game of the year.

i havent really played any of those games except Orange Box and Halo3. Orange Box wont win cause its not a game, its a bunch of games. Halo3 didnt impress me that much, just like its predecessor, its a good multilayer shooter, not much else IMO.

I haven't played TF2 yet (been waiting for them to patch the 360 version), but doesn't it only have like, two modes and five maps?

It has six maps, but two of the maps have multiple parts, which is essentially like three maps in one. There are two modes CTF and Control Pont, but the control point maps all act very differently in regards of which team plays defense or offense.

Honestly, there is not much to it at all. Unfortunately, each game type is linked to the map you are on. One map is CTF, and all the others are territories. Me and my buddies weren't interested in any of the territories games, and in the end played the one CTF map over and over again for a few hours and a few nights. Doesn't have much staying power to be honest.

I will say that the art direction and animation is absolutely superb, and the concept is a ball, it is just lacking a bit in content.

FYI, mod is not an insulting term. Some of the best games have been mods or based off of user created mods. The oringnal counterstrike and the team fortress were mods. Maybe mod wasn't the best term, as it wasn't a user created variation but rather valve, but you get my point.

Well, I hope they don't count Orange Box since it's not really a new game so much.

I'm inclined to say Bioshock, but they DID give Halo 3 a higher rating...

I highly doubt it will be WoW, especially since we are talking about an expansion pack, and I don't think that those are eligible for GOTY anyway.

Super Mario Galaxy hasn't come out yet. As skeptical as I was about yet another Mario game doing anything really noteworthy, it does seem to have promise.

So I'm saying probably Bioshock, but there are many games yet to come out this year, so who knows?

as sick as i would be if halo 3 won GOTY for it's lack of pretty much doing anything different than 1 or 2, Crysis would make me almost as sick. I've seen it in action and other than the amazing graphics it's just another FPS, no different. Yes i know very few games truly innovate nowadays you can't reward something that doesn't at all when other games do innovate at least slightly and keep up with the others' quality.

Bioshock was fun but it fell really short in the gameplay and story department...and choices department (if that counts as one, it was hyped as having "amazingly real" choices)

All this Orange Box hype is unnecessary, great gameS (note the plural), great value, but 5 games. GOTY=1 game, and should be a new game, not remakes. Takes the award for best value though.

Assassin's Creed, while it's too early to definitively say it should/should not be GOTY, keep in mind most previews that have come out in the last month have listed many serious issues like AI, combat, and lack of depth in the gameplay.

Mario Galaxy is one of 2 games that truly innovate this year, to me at least. However there's just something about mario that just makes it seem like he doesn't hold a candle to any of the other competitors, can't really explain it.

Mass Effect, assuming it delivers on it's promises (and it's looking like it does) would be the easy choice for GOTY. Seems to have a story worthy of legendary status, innovative combat/gameplay FOR AN RPG (please please please read that over and over all you FPS people that knock it), great graphics, sound, length, choices that actually HAVE A SERIOUS EFFECT on the story, and a conversation system that will becopied for years.

Seen it in action? Does that mean you've played it?
