Ok...sounds crazy because most of the playstation is indescribable polygons and pixels when looked at today...but there are a couple that can stand the test of time...well sort of.

What Playstation 1 games in your opinion are still playable and easy enough to look at today?

I'll throw some games out there that I still play today and don't get a headache from.:P

Gran Turismo 2

Einhander

Metal Gear Solid

Tekken 3

Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy IX and VIII look great, and Symphony of the Night still looks as good as the DS Castlevanias.

I'd say the original Rayman looks pretty nice still, rather pixelated on a nice TV set but the artstyle and level design still looks snazzy.

Almost all the PSX games I have hold up pretty well. Maybe it's because I don't mind the graphics and focus on what the games offer me other than graphics.

Considering I still enjoy playing 8-bit games even today in 2012. The original Playstation 32-bit games I still enjoy. The gaphics are dated, but since I remember when they were state of the art. My current Playstation 1 games I am playing are MDK, Independence day, Diablo and Final Fantasy VIII. I'm not hung up of graphics in videogames so much.

I just remember that these are 32-bit videogames, so the look does not effect the enjoyment I get from old Playstation games. Anygame can hold up today if you enjoy it.

I still enjoy the original "Twisted Metal" on the original Playstation, even though it doesn't come close to"Twisted Metal" on the Playstation 3.

I think the 8-bit comparison is a little off base since most of those games are really unique in style and made to be cartoonish...Where as if you play Medal of Honor on the ps1 it was (at the time) a pretty gritty realistic type fps game, but looking at it today it looks worse than doom on the Snes.

In some ways I could see some comparisons to the Atari Gen, for being part of the gen that really started the 3-d polygon movement (where the Atari Gen really started the video game movement in general)

2-d already had 20 years to help perfect itself while 3-d polygons were pretty dang new. Which is why some of the games on the ps1 In my opinion look crap today. I realize though if you thought it was fun back then you probably could still get some enjoyment out of it today. But there are a couple of games that I had fun with back when I was younger and I can't play them anymore today just because my eyes hurt from trying to make out pixelated blobs.

EDIT: Yes I know polygons were used on the SNES system so you really could use the argument that the SNES and the Jaguar was the atari2600 type console for 3-d polygons, I'm just stating as the Saturn, PS1, N64 generation as a whole made it their main push. Where as on the SNES it was more of a gimmick at the time and the Jaguar just bombed.

Both tekken 3 and dino crisis have 3d backgrounds.

As far I know the graphics of Dino Crisis and Tekken are pre-rendered so it's more or less 2D graphics with 3D character models

Dino Crisis is not prerendered, at all. Tekken 3 is a mixture of 3d modeling and 2d textures, but I'd personally say its rendered in 3d.

PS1 had great graphics - for 1995. You have to put things into perspective. Back then 3D graphics were something new and exciting but today - not really. Yes, the polygon counts on the 5th gen consoles are pathetic for modern standards (only the Jaguar and 32X were worse) and the games look extremely pixelated (N64 was a little better in this regard) but that were the hardware limitations back then. If you wanted the best graphics you either needed a good PC or had to go to the arcades. Still, the 5th gen has given us some all-time classics that really pushed their genres to the next level. The outdated graphics don't really tarnish that imo. But if you absolutely need better graphics then I recomend playing PS1 games on the PS2 or emulator which makes them look better (same with N64 games which look a lot better on VC or emulator).

Developers put more content into games when they worked with limited graphics. Things slowly went downhill near the end of the PS2 era. I would say most of the PSone RPG's still keep a fresh vibe. The Resident Evil series and Metal Gear Solid are top notch.

I still play my PS1 a lot even to this day. There are some great titles where fun-factor hugely overcomes the poor graphics.

Star wars phantom menace

Nightmare creatures

Hogs of War

Worms

Doom 1+2

Tekken (any of them)

Fighting Force

GTA 1+2

Hercules

Final Fantasy 7

Theme Park

Syphon filter 2

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head but there are definately more :)

After playing the Metal Gear remake on gamecube i can't go back to the PSone version. Also the PC version of FF7 and FF8 makes the PSone look like a joke , ditto if you add high res mods.

What great PS1 games don't hold up? And how many of these games truly "held up" when they were released? Final Fantasy VII was always a graphical mishmash of realistic and cartoonish design, for example.

CLOUDsea
But Final Fantasy VII however, never looked good in the first place compared to many games at the time. Not many Rpgs on the PSX J influenced looked that good. Most other genre's held up well though. All the Crash games held up, Speed Punks/Freaks held up, all the Gex games held up except maybe the 2nd in some places, The 2nd and 3rd Spyro games, All the Rayman games held up well, T.R.A.G. held up well, TP held up well, there are a lot of games that held up well. Althoug the vast majority have not in a very large number. SotN for example removing fans nostalgia, does not hold up at all, the first Spyro doesn;t, a lot if not all THQ games haven't, the racing games that used realistic cars held up terribly, only like a couple FPS held up well. Quite a lot of fighting games didn't age well. Etc.

Pffft...what?! Are you kidding me? The CGI cutscenes were absolutely jaw-droppingly astonishing to behold at the time of release. I'm not a JRPG fan, and I played through the game just to see the next great CGI scene.

No they were not. The only way that would impress anybody is if they restricted their gaming to only mainstream SNES and GEN games and just jumped onto mainstream PS games with no other or many non-mainstream games/consoles in between. It's not amazing at all, that's all they used for the ads anyway, FMVs looked better, the CGI was floaty, unattached, pixellated, and static, and could mess with your TV screen in some cases causing random flashes in some cases. Also, the whole rest of the game was a large failure in the graphics department. What do you think the CGI was there for? Fun? It was there to cover up the fact the rest of the game looks like a$s even though the CGI also looked like ass, and many games around the same time and before looked much better. It's called mainstream gaming, the hype was there so you made yourself believe it was amazing bcause you were riding the hype train.

Did you use an HDTV when playing it? That's what would cause those problems. And yeah, most people did play SNES and Genesis before PS1, wince those were the systems before PS1...so what's your point? There was no Dreamcast or PS2 yet. Compared to Saturn and N64 games of the time, FFVII's CGI was quite impressive, so again, I'm failing to see your point with the consoles comment.

And please, point out these many games in 1997 that had better looking CGI.

There were other systems than the GEN and SNES, and on those systems most people just played the same 10 games on each best seller list over and over without exploring by looking at the terrible sales gaps on each system. Also, if you actually played Jrpgs those days, which most people didn't until after FFVII came out, it would also not impress you. Also, playing the other systems would make it look less impressive to. Also, sorry to say, but some of use were around before the game came out and saw it on its release, there were no HDTV'S back then, all we had where things like CRTS. CGI was not impressive. Even if comparing it to only video game CGI. It was crap depending on your experience in games and movies before hand. I also never said games that had beter looking CGI I said better looking games in general. But I see you span that for some reason.

Yeah, I know there were no HDTVs back then, I was asking you if you played it on an HDTV because I never had any flashing or floating pixels. There was something wrong with your copy of the game or your T.V.

And are you really trying to say that games like Phantasy Star III, Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy VI (JRPGs before FFVII) were visually more impressive than FFVII? Your blind.

You keep desperately spinning my words. I said not impressive in general and you say I am comparing them to Jrpgs? Because you know it's not impressive. I also was talking about PS1 games. The other point I made you're addressing is the fact that if you didn't play a limited number of games/other consoles in the gen before instead of playing mainstream only 10 games on the SNES and GEN like a lot of people did, it would not seem to be impressive. Heck, if you had the PSx when it came out and played games other than mainstream games/systems it wouldn't be impressive, there is nothing impressive about FFVII, nothing at all. The only argument you can make is the poor quality CGI which looks worse than some FMV games. It's also not a reason to say the game looks good when the majority of the game looks like ass compared to any other game around its time and you have not even denied this. So the only thing we have is CGI, and whether it was amazing to you then does not change the fact it never was impressive even at the time. There was nothing impressive about its poor crappy CGI. Objective and Subjectively.

^ some random 2 cents to the above discussion.

Final Fantasy 7 imo looks pretty bad, but at the time it still looked pretty good...it should make sense. Even though it can be hard sometimes today to look at its still a fun game to playthrough, but compare screenshots of 7 to 9 and you see big differences.

All ps1 Final Fantasies are fun...but yes I do agree that FF7 looks pretty ugly today even compared with its sibling FF ps1 games.

I'm speaking from when it first came out. I'm not looking back on it from today, it was terrible when it came out in everyway, and the only argument you could make for it was CGI which was poor quality.
