Sony teases "the future" of Playstation - countdown to 2/20/13

In what looks like some sort of PS4 announcement, Sony has started an official countdown to February 20, 2013 at 6 PM EST. 

Looks like things could get VERY interesting, and much sooner than I think any of us expected, if this reveal is indeed the PS4. *crosses fingers*

Not me. They had to reveal it before GDC in March so devs could openly talk about their games. They couldn't reveal it at GDC because MS would do the same and they will both have to share the spotlight. Now, they both can reveal their next console on their own time.

Honestly though I kind of thought maybe sometime around late March, but I had no idea we'd possibly see anything in the middle of February. Goddamn I'm so hyped, these next 20 days are going to drive me crazy with anticipation.

Interesting.  That looks very similar to the PS2's design.  Hard to tell obviously, but it'd be cool to see a sleek black rectangle instead of a bloated George Forman grill.

Not counting The Last Guardian, The Last of Us, Beyond, Pupeteer and all those other new IPs Sony showed at TGS? ;p All are coming out this year. (With the exception of The Last Guardian of course. That's never coming out.

P.S It just hit me. We might just see The Last Guardian in 20 days. With PS4 quality graphics no less. Someone hold me.

For those thinking I'm the crazy old uncle who's lost his mind, pause the video at the 4 second mark, and the middle of the 27-second mark.   The 4 second mark is an upside down 4, but clearly visible.  And the 27-second mark is very clearly a 4 as well.

Although it's not like we'd find out on the 20th; this isn't something they'll talk about willingly. It'll be one of those "oh by the way" things.

Hopefully there isn't too much of a push towards digital distribution either. I don't have the bandwidth to download current generation titles, and I can only imagine how much of a Bluray next gen games will fill.

I've been guessing $499 out of Sony and MS. $350 or $399 for the bad version that no one really wants and $499 for the one with the real hard drive/network/controllers/whatever.

No way either of them charge over $399 after the disasterous start the PS3 had.

Wallstreet Journal reporting that PS4 will be revealed on the 20th AND that the PS4 is coming out this holiday season. 

That should clear any doubts over whether or not it;s getting pushed to 2014.

Sony said we'd 'see the future' of PlayStation on February 20th, and it appears to be true: The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company will not only reveal the next PlayStation at the event, but actually put the new video game console on sale later this year. According to the publication's anonymous sources, both the next PlayStation and Microsoft's next game system will compete head to head going into the holiday season.

Though Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and others had originally telegraphed that the next PlayStation might not be ready as soon as the next Xbox, it appears to have been a feint. We may see what the so-called PlayStation Orbis has to offer in as few as three weeks.S0lidSnake

Oh man, this is going to be incredibly entertaining to watch. The PS4 and next Xbox might be launching very close to one another this fall. 

Microsoft must have been really caught off guard by this one. Here Kaz Hirai was saying in an interview they would let Microsoft announce the next Xbox first... obviously that was a ploy to throw Microsoft off. 

Sony must believe they have something incredible to blow it open like this. How much of a reveal do you think it will be? Will we even see the console? The controller? Obviously we will see some tech demos, probably a real game or two. No price, or date I thinkdvader654

I think we'll see the console and controller along with maybe one or two games.

As interested as I am in seeing the console itself, I have even more interest in seeing what they're doing with the controller. Is it the same Dualshock again? Or a slightly modified version? Or did they do something entirely different? So many questions, hope they get answers on the 20th.

You're not hearing it wrong, he definitely said that. But by the looks of this it appears he said it to throw Microsoft off guard.

That's definitely an excellent possibility. I wonder how Microsoft will react if it's true? Will they come out of the woodwork and reveal the XB720 afterwards?

I think it'll be a quick one. They'll show the console, couple tech demos and at least one game, talk about its multimedia capabilities, and call it a day. I'm certain they're gonna be saving a lot for E3. They shouldn't have anything particularly noteworthy for the PS3 to show by then, so they should be able to focus primarily on the PS4 there.

MS is going to throw the biggest bash you will ever see. Last time they revealed it on MTV when they were going after the hipster crowd. Now they are going after everyone's living room. I wouldnt be surprised if they booked an hour on NBC/CBS or ABC to reveal this show. They are going to get every major celebrity out there and have usher blow everyone of them. 

Of course, they are also going to show the biggest game of this fall and steal the show with next gen Call of Duty by Infinity Ward.
