I know it's probably going to sound bad, but honestly?... Final Fantasy 7Greyfeld
Same here, i payed a few RPGs before it but that was the game that made me love RPGs.
Interesting question. Every game I have played has molded me as a gamer.
I grew up on the Atari. Pitfall kept me playing for hours. That game I think is what made me love games. Pacman too. And a few others I got my hands on, but I pretty much gave up on gaming for a while until the Nintendo came out. My friend bought one and invited me over. He was like, "Dude, you must check this out. Mario is awesome." When I saw the great color 8-bit, bad to the bone, graphics, I had to play. And the gameplay was so much better than Atari. I was hooked all over again.
I got a NES and started beating every game I could rent and ever game my friends had. Then SNES came out. WOOT. I started beating all the games my friends couldn't beat. They would invite me over just to beat a level or the game for them.
Then I sort of lost interests again. I was in my teens and learning to party. Genesis came and gone, didn't care, and I missed out on a lot of cool games, which I have played recently. I still played games here and there at the arcades, but I kept my SNES packed up.
Then I saw a Playstation commercial. Booya. Bought one. Started beating every game I could rent. Then I stopped playing again, until I bought my son a PS2. I remembered I liked Tomb Raider on the ps1, so I thought I try his ps2. Angel of Darkness was my first game.I was blown away. Then I started trying good games on the ps2. I was hooked all over again. I had a huge library to beat.
I was still beating games on the ps2 when I built my first gaming PC to play FEAR. WOW, what a game. Then 360, and it keeps going.
I really enjoy the 2D games coming out on the arcade, and I still play GBA games. I just beat Kim Impossble 2. Great 2D platformer. You wouldn't think so because of the cartoon it is based on, but it is one of the best 2D platformers on any system, IMO.
So there is my gaming life story summed up. And why did I just type all that?
First it started with Age of Empires: Age of Kings. Then I got into Age of Mythology. However, what really turned me into a hardcore gamer was Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I played that game for 3 years straight online, one of the best communities ever. Then I found Jedi Outcast, which led me to Jedi Academy, which led me to KOTOR, which then got me into the modding scene, and now I'm here. Okami got me into the "artsy" sorts of games, so now I'm buying all of those up.
However, I started game waaaaaaay back when I was about 4-5 years old on the Super Nintendo. I like games like NBA Slam, Madden, Aladdin, Mario Kart, etc. the Mario platformers were too difficult for me. On the N64 I loved Rogue Squadron, Banjo Kazooie, Pokemon Snap, and others. I've always been a huge Pokemon fan, which until the DS came out were the only reasons I would have a handheld. Now I own a handheld for Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and thousands of RPGs.
Atari >>>> Boxing, Superman
MSX Personal Computer >>>> Most Konami games, what stands out is King's Valley, Road Fighter, and Yie Ar (?) Kung Fu among others.
SNES >>> Mario World, Mario All-Stars, Castlevania IV, Prince of Persia, Pilotwings, F-Zero, Super Soccer, Captain Tsubasa III, Aladdin, Goof Troop, Lion King
Sega Saturn >>>> Megaman X4
N64 >>>> Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
PSX >>>> Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VIII
PS2 >>> Kingdom Hearts
DS >>> Phoenix Wright
I remember seeing GTA 3 at my friends house at a young age .. blew my mind .. I couldn't believe it, it was so alluring
and so i'd sneak a copy for my pc & play after school & at night -it felt so forbidden
And the Hitman series I fell in love with
& Prisoner of War !
anything with immersive stealth & I'm sold
Lets see, a few come to mind but if I think back to being a kid I'd say
Sega Master System - Alex the kidd in miracle world
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES. I'd been a gamer on and off since the NES first came out (aaaah, the SMB/Duck Hunt double game cartridge :P) but that was the first game to really hook me for hours on end.
Old-School Sonic ( Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 3, etc) probably had the most effect on me.

Same here. Those were the first games I owned and beat at seven years old. But Age of the Empires was the first game I was super addicted to. Most have played it 500 times and thats no joke.
god im so glad someone mentioned Metal Gear Solid!Atari >>>> Boxing, Superman

Zelda Ocarina of Time. I still play that game. I know all the dialogue(if you would evencall it that) by heart.
Super Mario Bros,Legend of Zelda,Mega Man,Final Fantasy,Metroid just to name a few.
All those games are older than me though.
Thanks to my aunt for giving me her husband's NES. I still wonder if there marriage ended over her giving it to me. *joking*
Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario 64, Paper Mario 64, Smash Bros.
Growing up playing games on the NES, SNES, and N64 made me the gamer I am today. Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario were really the first two games I ever played. I suppose the sense of adventure they offered is what initially captivated me. Paper Mario 64 was the advent of RPGs for me, and Smash Bros. on N64 inspired a passion inside of me for beating things up :D
Super Mario Bros 3, the first Mario was the first game I ever played but the third one was the first game I remember really getting addicted too.
I would say though the game that really shaped my gaming tastes is probably Final Fantasy 2. It was my first real introduction into RPG's and its been my favorite genre ever since.
Super Mario 64 (It was the first mario game I played since I wasn't rlly alive during the nes/snes days lol) and Metal Gear Solid are big ones for me that made me the gamer I am today.
lol, Ape Espace 2 for the ps2, Jak and Daxter, and Ratchet and Clank - Up your arsenal, the original, and going commando... and Poke'mon Gold
The first game I remember playing was a game called Canyon Climber - it was on a TRS 80 Radio Shack computer - the year was 1982. In March of 1988, I got my NES and since that point I've been both a PC and a console gamer.
I started to post basically my whole system/pc history, but it was way too long, basically I have owned over a dozen console systems (many of which I still do) and 5-6 different configurations of PC's that all had 1, 2 or many more games on them that kept me playing. From the TRS-80 PC to the Sony PS3 each system I've had has been well worth the purchase and play time put into it.
I can't just list one. So here are the games that made me into what I play today:
Mega Man
First game I fell in love with. I was too young to play it but I knew it was something special. Became a true gamer since the SNES but the original Mega Man introduced me to it in a big way.
Super Nintendo
It may not be a game, but this was the first console that was 100% my own. So it must be mentioned for me.
Gameboy
I have to shout out to the original Gameboy and Tetris. This is the thing that made me into a hardcore handheld gamer. I still love handheld gaming. I think I love it more than console gaming to tell you the truth. And it's all thanks to this thing here!
Final Fantasy VI (III SNES)
Probably the RPG game that made me fall in love with the genre. I'm still a huge RPG fan and it's all because of this game.
Super Street Fighter II
I think I attribute this game (and Cammy) in turning me into a huge fighting game fan.
Zelda Ocarina of Time
I have to list the greatest game of all-time on my list! And it's not just because it's got the highest ratings ever. It really is a revolutionary game and one of my favorites. Also, it's the first game that showed me how amazing this medium can be, not just from a gameplay point of view but from a artistic and storytelling one as well.
Pokemon Puzzle League
Okay, just ignore the fact that it's a Pokemon game. It's the underlying puzzle game that defined me as a huge addict of puzzle games. I never played Tetris Attack so I have to shout out to this one here. And contrary to what I feel, the Pokemon part of it actually added to the fun factor of the game. Still addicted to the game today!
Halo
I have to acknowledge the original Halo in turning me into a FPS fan. Before that, I only played RPGs and Fighting games. But once I got a XBOX and Halo, I got another genre that I can enjoy.
Company of Heroes
I was a casual PC player mostly dabbling into the Blizzard stuff like Starcraft and Warcraft III. But it was Company of Heroes that turned me into a core PC player. It's still my favorite RTS ever!
Day of Defeat Source
Before Modern Warfare and MW2, this was my first online multiplayer FPS addiction. I was always afraid of playing FPSs online until I played this game which opened me up to how fun it really is. Still play it to this day, but not as much because of Modern Warfare 2 of course!
But IF I had to choose only one game, no contest, it's definitely this game right here:
Super Mario Bros.
I remember begging my big brother and older cousins to let me play this game. Of course they thought I was too young and didn't even let me play it. But little did my brother know that I tried to secretly play it as much as I can even at that age! My brother found out and hid the NES from me! But what this game did was made me curious about video games. It was so amazing and appealing that I couldn't stop! I got a taste of playing it when my brother would let me play one level once in awhile. But that was enough to make me love games.
dyno crisis 1&2, tomb raider 1, and dextors laboratory turned me into the gamer i am today, tho i wanted rpg in the start
2 games come to mind. Yars Revenge for the 2600 ( nostalgia) and a space game called Solaris, also for the 2600. After I experienced these 2 games my addiction was set. Through out the years I did lose interest for awhile but video games are always what I end up circling back to.
