Definitely Dead Space. I foolishly however turned the music off, because I thought it would make it less scary. I didn't realize that the blaring music meant there was an enemy nearby. Not having that warning sign made the game so f**king scary.
Banjo Kazooie...........that shark instilled fear into my soul.

I'm seriously shocked at how many people are saying that FEAR is the scariest game they've ever played. Clearly you guys haven't been playing horror games, at all. Condemned is basically a scarier FEAR and Siren or any Fatal Frame or Silent Hill is far worse. FEAR barely even qualifies as a horror game.F.E.A.R. Dead Space was tensing, but not very scary.

I played the demo of fear 2 and that was scary but im not about to say it was scarier or less scary based on a demo. Im gunna say bioshock. Its not really scary but its the only game to ever get under my skin. The atmosFear is terrifying even though what happens isntSilent Hill 2. For most of the game, the horror is subtle. It gets under your skin, it messes with your head. But the moments when there IS something coming for you, when there's a monster coming out of the darkness, it looks so disturbing. These things you look at and you say "What IS THAT?" And the storyline is very well told.Got_to_go
Dont forget Pyramid Head that just made the game for me serisously when i first played the game it took me a month too get use to darkness again when i went to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night i would look behind every corner lol

For some reason Pyramid Head never quite did it for me. But he does create one of my favorite moments in the game
You walk down the apartment hallway, then your radio starts acting up. You make it to a gate and there he is. Pyramid Head. Just standing there with that huge knife, staring at you. Plus the lighting of the hallway had him cast in an eerie red light. That was so unnerving, and a perfect example of Silent Hill 2's style of horror.
yea everytime i say pyramid head i jumped lol espeically.................
when hes raping the dolls man thats the part that really scarred me for life
This thread really makes me wanna play the game over again for many nights of no sleep lol
No game has ever really scared the crap out of me and/or there are none that are horrifying or whatever. However, games that made me jump a couple of times: Condemned 1 & 2, Fear 1 & 2, Bioshock, REmake, and Dead Space. Like I said, these, to me are not that scary but there were a couple of times in each game that I jumped due to someone or thing appearing out of no where. The grizzly bear scene it Condemned 2 was a little tense though.DManSteelerFan
You should definitely give Echo Night: Beyond on PS2 a try. I guarantee you that you'll be scared most of the game.

I understand you. I played Condemned, the silent hill and alone in the dark franchises, through and deep. But it didn't grip me as the first-person mix of action and horror of FEAR did. Absolutely every horror game nowadays relies on tension, survival-styled gameplay where you constantly have no ammo, and stuff like that. But only in FEAR they were things like a telephone falling from a desk creeping you out.

Granted there may be one or two decent scares in F.E.A.R., I really don't see the game as a whole being that scary. That's like calling the film "The Grudge" scary. F.E.A.R. relies on cheap scares to make you jump, the above mentioned games are much more immersing and atmospheric and will psychologically scare you.
But FEAR has variety, moments when you relax in action, moments when you don't know what lies ahead by can't still be sure about a whether it's a fight, a ghost or a cup of tea. Again, it's one horror that doesn't rely on tension that much.
About scaring psychologically, you're completely right FEAR can't do that, it doesn't twist your brains in horror.

I completely agree with you on the new games aren't even considered horror games by me logic. I just wanted to point out that if you got the best weapon in the game (I know you said IMO, I'm just stating another point), of course nothing's going to withstand more than a few shots. That's like me saying, "Yeah, the creatures in resident evil got real boring because they wouldn't take more than two shots to kill, Oh, did I mention I'm using the Fully Upgraded Rocket Launcher".
