To each their own, but the Witcher is more structured, but still retains an open-world, non-linear, story-driven experience that remains cohesive and understandable. Skyrim and Fallout are great and each hold a special place in my heart, but goddamn they're all over the place! Roam the wastes for fifteen minutes, someone rushes you asking for help. You help them and all of a sudden you're in the midst of a quest that's beyond your level, or is a part of something else later on in the game. I'm not knocking Skyrim or Fallout, but it's the truth.

My only problem with the Witcher 3 is that the game's large scale world is more detailed horizontally than vertically. For some reason this put me off so much during my first playthrough. I think the world building in The Elder Scrolls V was amazing in terms of creating landscape and scenery that scaled well to the human eye. But on a technical level the Witcher 3 is so gorgeous!

@colbycadwell: comparing skyrim, fallout, OBLIVION, ect. to other games will never work. they're absolute masterpieces, theres nothing like them.

Ha!

Skyrim ?

Skyrim was good. It had better lore. TES will probably continue to have the best lore out of all the game series I've played. But in terms of writing ? It's terrible.

The Witcher 3 has better character development...and the writing is superior no matter how you look at it.

Skyrim's story felt like it was just retelling a part of the TES history.

The player felt distanced from the actual Dragonborn, you just kind of followed one of the many paths you could take to the end of the game.

Skyrim should not be compared to The Witcher 3... They are very different.

The Witcher focuses on story and Skyrim just gave a whole bunch of lore to sift through.

LoL that this thread is still alive,

funny thread, i made an acct just to make a comment on the original OP.

I haven't touched witcher III due to the abundance of apparently unavoidable nudity, so I cant speak to that. That said I have about 1k hours between oblivion and skyrim and I will say I think you're looking at skyrim with a bit of rose coloured glasses. If we are talking vanilla to vanilla, I would guess Witcher III is the better game. Vanilla skyrim is pretty bad all things considered. Magic has been reduced to "what colour do you want to kill them with?", overabundance of daurgr killing, removal of an entire school of magic (?), weapons that serve no purpose. . Useless skill trees. . .Yes you can sink about 200 hour easily into the vanilla version (which is funny that im calling it bad in spite of that), however Skyrim was far too oversimplified . . . to a fault, to really make it a worthwhile game. With mods, Skyrim imo probably easily is as good or better than Witcher III. The best thing about vanilla skyrim is probably the leveling system. You really can create an almost infinite ammount of characters, and imo its one of the best and most underrated leveling systems in the genre.

The voice acting in skyrim is pretty bad (my wife's playing oblivion and its really shocking how much worse skyrim's voice acting is). The stories with a few exceptions are basically bland, esp the overall theme which borrows too much from nordic mythology in a way that feels foreign to TES (even though it borrows from a lot of mythos from that part of the world). It just feels generic at times. The lore is great in TES, obviously, and someone mentioned feeling more involved or something with TES than witcher, ide agree, the lore in TES is fantastic (the potema quest was pretty remarkable). Fortunately, their are several mods which basically fix all the poor gameplay decisions bethesda made for skryim. If we are talking modded skyrim, thats a different story. I almost wonder if bethesda intentionally made skyrim barebones to allow modders to build on to it more easily.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves, bethesda in many ways dropped the ball with skyrim especailly when you consider how well done oblivion was. Anyway, just my 2c as a loyal elder scrolls fan.

tldr: Vanilla skyrim=bad and definitely worse than witcher III, W/mods, arguably one of the best rpgs of all time.

In my experience there are very few unavoidable nude scenes in TW3. I can only think of two at this point. If you don't pursue it, there's relatively little nudity. Apart from those two scenes I was thinking of, I only saw my chosen romantic interest naked, but you don't have to pursue romance if you don't want to. So that's two forced scenes of nudity during 175 hours of playing TW3. I might have missed some, though, so don't take my word for it. And there's still a lot of violence and all kinds of horrible stuff going on, of course.

I just thought of a third scene. And maybe a fourth, I'm not entirely sure. But only one of those four can be considered a sex scene (sort of). I realize my argument is beginning to crumble. There's nudity, yes, but I wouldn't say there's an abundance (depending on your definition of the word, of course). That's just something people say because they pursue all the possible intercourse options.

My problem with Witcher is that you don't get to make your own character and all the play styles feel more or less the same as each other. So it's really just a story game with some great characters, I didn't think much of it as an actual RPG.

I completely agree. The witcher 3 is good, however I just prefer skyrim over it. Yeah sure skyrim is a lot more of a simple game point a to point b. I also like the lore of skyrim a whole hell of a lot better. But the witcher 3 is still a good game. Just my opinion :)

Thanks for the info loafo. Violence and such doesnt bug me so long as its contextual and not in poor taste (like, gratituitous . . guess i could have googled how to spell that).

I think the OP was asserting that skyrim was a better game than witcher III, not that he prefer's it although he did also prefer it.

If the question is which is a better game? Even though I havnt played Witcher III, it would have to be pretty sorry to not be a better game than skyrim due to the fundamental gameplay and storytelling issues present in the vanilla version of skyrim.

Even the dull melee combat of skyrim feels fun in 1st person. But ofc using magic was much more fun and varied.

That's a contradiction: was it dull or fun?

I'm only a few hours into The Witcher 3's first expansion pack, but that has already had more wow moments and more interesting quests than my entire playthrough of Skyrim.

So yeah, the $10 expansion is a better game than Skyrim, too. :p

both games are good. I've been playing witcher 3 a lot more lately and i like it a lot. Just its buggy as hell. Its been a while since i played such a buggy AAA game. Most have been graphical bugs so not completely game breaking but annoying to see pop up so much. The characters and voice acting is superior in witcher 3 for the most part. Skyrim had far too few unique voice actors and really breaks the immersion when everyone sounds the same.

But overall i still like Skyrim more, but their styles are so different you can't exclude any from being played if your an rpg fan. Gamespot overrated this game, but its still very good. Really there is nothing besides Skyrim that matches it in the amount of things to do and the size of the gameworld.

Necromancers everywhere huh. Oh, it is another "my fav game is better than your fav game". Both were great games but neither is 10/10 imo.

I actually agree. However, I like Skyrim more simply because I enjoy playing my own story. If the Witcher 3 allowed me to create my own character, let me to go wherever I want, and allowed me to play as a criminal, I would like the game a lot more.

Troll thread of the century. Biggest clickbait ever. And monsterously lies about the game outright on so many occasions.

The Wticher 3 compard too Skyrim (on the highest setting, with destruction magic and sealth bow)

Skyrim (on the highest setting, with destruction magic and sealth bow) >> almost any RPG except Dark Souls (and possibly F3/NV & ME/ME2) compared to back then

and then its Skyrim (on the highest setting, with destruction magic and sealth bow) >/= Dark Souls & F3/NV & ME/ME2 at the time (Skyrim OST and fresh winter beauty gives it the upper edge compared to Dark Souls, while ME/ME2 miss real exploring)

even if the Witcher 3 had some of the best story, characters and facial expresions up today, and is still a worthy GOTY 2015 candidate the overall package, gameplay (action), exploring, pace, quests, beauty, dungeons etc. etc. of Skyrim back then was too epcial (!!!).. (hell, ever since Skyrims "winter scenery" hit us, such winter/mountain sceneries in other games, movies etc. have become in, almost overused...)

"The dialog system is Skyrim is unmatched"

Are you a troll?

Skyrim has a horrible quest and dialog system, unless you like hearing the same few voice actors and few lines of dialog over and over.

Dialogue system in skyrim?

Serious question, does skyrim even have a dialogue system? It has meaningless dialogue options that generate different repsonses. Hard to call that a dialogue system. And how is this a troll thread? This is a legit discussion

@kleptominotaur: I remember a time in Skyrim when my wood elf asked a wood elf what a wood elf was. That's some great roleplaying dialogue right there.

I have both Skyrim, Fallout NV, and Witcher 3. Reading this thread gives me alot concern about Fallout 4 because it reminds of the inherent flaws in the Bethesda games. Poor story development, overwhelming and sprawling sidequests, and limited resources on the voice acting front.

Both are pretty great, but The Witcher is a better game.

Just the wooden, lifeless characters in Skyrim alone is enough for me to give the nod to The Witcher. I must say though, there was a certain kind of magic to exploring Skyrim's world, I don't get that feeling nearly as often in The Witcher III. Overall though, The Witcher is a better game.
