[QUOTE="LINKloco"]Stiff arms to the face by an offensive player with the ball will now be enforced with a penalty for 15 yards? I love to see when a running back stiff arms a diving defender to the face and breaks free for a big one. Weaksauce.=/detroitpistons0

What? Lame... Unless they mean if the hand actually reaches into the helmet or something... Now that's worth some penalty.

Supposedly there's already a rule in the books about sticking your hands on peoples facemasks(not grabbing), but just never really enforced. Apparently, some stiff arms where the ball carrier drives the defenders head back sharply or violently has prompted this.

Vince Young very nearly quit football

For the first time this year, the people at EA Sports elected to put a retired player on the cover of their Madden video game. Unbeknownst to them, they almost did the same thing last year. Vince Youngwas ready to quit football after his rookie year.

He doesn't go into great detail about the reasons, but he did tell Thomas George of NFL.com that things were once so bad for him that retirement was a viable option.

"I really thought long and hard about it. There was so much going on with my family. It was crazy being an NFL quarterback. It wasn't fun anymore. All of the fun was out of it. All of the excitement was gone. All I was doing was worrying about things.

If nothing else, it's a reminder that we never, ever really know what's going on with our favorite athletes. Or anyone, really. Being rich, being famous, being idolized, being on the cover of Madden ... none of it guarantees that a guy won't be sitting at home crying his eyes out and listening to, I don't know, Elliott Smith albums or something.

If he even considered walking away from life in the NFL, whatever pain or frustration he was experiencing had to be pretty profound. It's probably Merril Hoge's fault.

Young's feeling better about things now, though.

"My teammates helped lift me out of it. I prayed really hard. And I began to focus on God's calling for me. Play football. Be a role model."

That's good to hear. And I suppose this post wouldn't be complete without mention of these pictures that made the rounds recently. I never paid them much attention here, because I didn't think they were that big of a deal. He's sweaty, he's shirtless, he's drinking. He's allowed. More than half of the posts I'll make today will be in the same condition.

It's odd to think, though, that if the same pictured had surfaced a year ago, and they got the same attention, it might have been the thing that pushed Vince Young into an extremely early retirement.

Pacman Jones: 'Who Do I Have To Kill To Get Reinstated Into The NFL?'

DALLAS-Noting that it has been over a year since his supposed one-year suspension from the NFL for his involvement in off-the-field criminal incidents, cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones wondered aloud Monday as to whom he had to kill to begin playing football again. "Man, what does [NFL commissioner Robert] Goodell want me to do, straight up gank someone? Choke someone out? Knife a guy? Put a bullet through some dude's earhole? Because I'm willing to do whatever it takes," Jones said to reporters present to watch him move into his new Dallas home. "Just say a name and the man is dead before you put the phone down, I want to play so bad." Goodell said he would be glad to meet with Jones before camp begins in order to discuss his future and stressed that Jones should please not kill him.

^Roy Williams? LOL .

Honestly, I think Pacman gave a very immature response... It's like he's joking about his incident. Also, I usually expect that response from someone my age... I don't think his response helped him a bit.

Jason Taylor says he hasn't requested trade out of Miami-That's good for the Dolphins, but I don't think Taylor will do much good on the field even if he does stay.

Bears DT Tommy Harris holding out for a new deal-IMO, I think after what he has shown, he deserves one.

Gang member's letter relates to shooting of Broncos' Darrent Williams-Wow, this is a huge lead in this case. Either that, or it's a phony.

Former Colts Kicker Mike Vanderjagt returns to CFL with Toronto-The guy was one of the most accurate kickers of all time. His attitude hampered him greatly... What a shame.

Cowboys give Owens new 4-year, $34 million deal

This is definitely not the same T.O.

Without the controversy that led to his departure from Philadelphia, Terrell Owens quietly received a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, team sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.

The wide receiver was slated to earn $7 million this season in the last year of his contract, but he now receives a four-year, $34 million deal. Owens is slated to earn $27 million over the next three seasons, making him -- along with Randy Moss, Javon Walker and Larry Fitzgerald -- one of the highest paid wide receivers in the league.

Owens will receive $12.9 million to sign and $100,000 of his $830,000 2008 base salary guaranteed, for a total of $13 million guaranteed. He is now under contract through 2011.

In 2004, Owens was heading into the second year of a seven-year, $48.97 million contract with the Eagles when he began squawking about a new deal. He showed up for training camp wearing camouflage, signifying he was at war with the organization, and wound up getting sent home, leading to the bizarre scene of him giving interviews while doing sit-ups in his driveway. The saga dragged on for months, ending with a suspension, then his release.

He signed a three-year, $25 million contract with Dallas in March 2005 and has certainly lived up to it, leading the team in receiving both years while piling up club records. His 28 touchdown catches over the last two seasons are more than any other receiver, and that includes Moss, who set the league record for TDs in a single-season last year.

Michael Smith covers the NFL for ESPN. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I wasn't sure if Owens was going to be on the team after this year, but now I don't have to worry about that. He should be playing in Dallas until the end of his career, which is great news.

Broncos release Travis Henry

Big expectations in Denver for Travis Henry ended Monday when the Broncos released the running back one season into his five-year free-agent deal.

"Although Travis has the ability to be one of the top running backs in the NFL, we have to make decisions that are in the best interests of our organization and its goal of winning a Super Bowl," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said in a statement. "We did not feel his commitment to the Broncos was enough to warrant a spot on this football team." LINK

HA, HA HA, HA, HA HA HA HA!! He hasn't been the most accurate kicker in like 4 years, where have you been? Vanderjagt is pathetic, even more than Martin Gramatica, but not as much as Bill Gramatica

Taylor will be good, but his play won't make a difference to that D.

Harris does deserve money, but the Bears probably won't pay him big.

Just exactly what you said.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Jeff Garcia is threatening to "walk away from the game" due to displeasure with his contract.
Garcia said on Sirius NFL Radio Wednesday that he "will seriously think about what my alternate options may be (if the Bucs don't give him a raise)...And it may come to not playing football anymore." Garcia feels "mistreated" and "taken advantage of," but did admit that walking away would be hard. It is highly doubtful that Garcia would go through with retiring.

C'mon, go easy. If he had a subpar year least season TB would have no problem cutting him. He got you guys to playoffs - and of the 17 QBs on Chucky's roster - Garcia is your best hope of getting back there this season. He's only gettin $2M -- if they double it, that's still a bargain. Let Jeff get paid :)

LB Thurman's Future Uncertain Following Indefinte Suspension
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL for violating its substance-abuse policy and will miss the 2008 season.

Under terms of the suspension, the free agent will not be considered for reinstatement until after the season, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Saturday.

It's the third consecutive season Thurman will miss.

Thurman was suspended by Commissioner Roger Goodell the last two seasons after he skipped a drug test, was arrested for drunken driving and failed to meet the league's expectations for reinstatement.

He was allowed to resume working out at Paul Brown Stadium in January and was fully reinstated April 21. The Bengals released him last month.

They should ban him for life, he's a loser and he'll never change. He could have been a really good player and it's sad but enough is enough.

Simms breaks silence

Chris Simms says his relationship with Jon Gruden is beyond repair and has been told he will not be with the team in 2008.

But with no trade on the horizon, the Bucs' forgotten quarterback wants to be released immediately, bringing an end to his career in Tampa Bay that seemed inevitable after missing nearly two seasons following surgery to remove his spleen.

"I feel like I'm being held hostage," Simms said. "I hate that all this has happened. I love Tampa. My family loves it here. But I've been quiet long enough. I feel like it's time to let everybody know why I'm not out there."

In an interview with the Times Monday, Simms broke his silence on why he has not attended the Bucs' off-season workout program.

He also shed some new light on his deteriorating relationship with Jon Gruden, who was instructed by the Glazer family to keep Simms on the roster last season against the wishes of the head coach. The Bucs signed Simms to a contract extension at the end of the 2006 season that paid him $7-million over the past two seasons. He is scheduled to earn a $2-million base salary in 2008.

Simms, who eventually was placed on Injured Reserve last season, says he's completely recovered from complications of his surgery in 2006. He is even entertaining attending the Bucs' mandatory minicamp, but not before lobbing bombs at the Bucs.

"I don't know how anybody can expect me to go back there and look coach Gruden in the eye and believe the relationship is hunky dory after some of the things that were said and done," Simms said. "Things were handled wrongly from the business end of it and definitely things were handled wrongly as far as how you treat a person.

Among the items Simms revealed Monday:

· Simms says he has confirmed that three teams contacted the Bucs on the second day of the NFL draft last April to begin discussions about trading a sixth- or seventh-round pick for the estranged quarterback. But when the Bucs selected San Diego quarterback Josh Johnson in the fifth round, "it basically ended that discussion."

· He said there is a 50 percent chance he attends the Bucs' mandatory minicamp June 17-19. If he still is on the roster in late July, he plans to report to training camp. "I'm not holding out or doing anything like that," Simms said. "if they want to deal with that media circus, that's fine with me."

· Simms offered that Gruden wanted to release him at the start of last season but the Glazer family intervened and made sure he had a spot on the roster, forcing the Bucs to keep four quarterbacks.

"I had a number of people tell me in the organization the Glazers basically made sure I wasn't released," Simms said. "That's the hardest part of this whoile thing. The Glazers are a great family. They're very caring human beings. I respect them in so many ways.'

· The NFL was so suspicious when the Bucs placed Simms on Injured Reserve last year that they made him fly to Missouri to be examined by a physician to determine if he had a season-ending injury.

"I had never been on a single injury report, so the NFL was a little suspicious," Simms said. I had to go see a doctor in Missouri that worked for the NFL. He was shocked there were all these MRIs of my elbow and shoulder but nothing of my abdomen. He put me through a battery of tests and knew I had some core issues there."

Simms says he knows he's not in the Bucs' plans for 2008. In fact, his name on a chart in Gruden's meeting room is off to the side next to Jake Plummer, the retired Broncos quarterback whom the Bucs will try to collect $7-million of his pro-rated signing bonus during a hearing in New York Wednesday.

"I know for a fact I'm not in their plans. I don't understand the hold up at this point. When Bruce Gradkowski got cut last week, Bruce Allen told him it was because there's not enough reps in practice for every quarterback. It's a crappy situation.

"How can I look (Gruden) in the eye when I know he wanted me cut last year. He did not want me to be part of the team and I have a lot of resentment about that. Nine or 10 months after a serious injury, I put my life on the line, it was the most serious injury they've ever been associated with, I worked as hard as I could to get back and he wasn't even going to give me a full year.

"I have a serious issue with that, I really do."

Simms said he felt the Bucs mishandled his injury last training camp, insisting that he had passed all physicals and was completely healthy. In fact, they attributed his performance to 'rustiness.'

"The way they handled it was wrong," Simms said. "I don't know if they wanted to cut me and didn't want to liable or they were hoping somebody would trade for me, but for him to say I was completely healthy and passed all the physicals and that I just wasn't performing well, that was a low blow. It was."

At one point, Gruden asked Simms if his problems had a mental component.

"He asked me, 'Is this injury in your head?'" Simms said. "I found that completely ridiculous. I was going through a tough time. I kept my mouth shut all summer. I felt I was betrayed to a degree. Nobody took time to talk to me on a personal level and see how I was doing."

Simms said the club did a series of tests on his elbow and shoulder when he complained of arm tightness, the result of not using his body to throw the ball.

"Anybody with common sense would check the area where there was a 10-inch scar going down the middle of my stomach first."

According to Simms, he was pressured into making an appearance in a preseason game at Miami, playing in just one series.

"The night before the game, coach asked me if I was ready to play," Simms said. "At that point, I knew there was no way I was ready to play. I had only had a few scout team reps for several weeks. But I went in there because I felt like they were giving me no choice."

"I understand the business part of this and what's in the team's best interest," Simms said. "But the time has come where I've got to look out for my interest, too.

"I feel great, I'm ready to play football again and I can't see how they expect me to back there and play and think everything will be fine. I'm doing this for legitimate reasons. I have a legitimate beef here. Things were done wrong from a business aspect and things were done wrong on a personal level. That's not how you treat people that have busted their butt for you."

^^Bad Blood in Buccaneer Bay!! This should be good for Simms, I think he is to good to be wasting away in TB(like Gruden would ever play him). I'd like to see him go to Chi-town to show up grossman.

Good read. Harsh comments in article and on TB blog page.

Still think Jeff Garcia should be damed cuz he's asking for a bump in pay?? :?

Check it: Robbie Gould, the Bears' kicker, recently signed a 5-year, $15M contract ($4.25M bonus). Garcia will make $2M in 2008. Even though he's old and injury-prone, that's just wrong.

i see ur point, tampa does have the salary cap and if i was gruden or allen i would throw him an extra 5.5 mill at the most

p.s:with the departure of gradawski and simms bucs are starting 2 look normal with 4 qb's on roster.

Plummer's case is closed

It's a done deal.

The Bucs and retired quarterback Jake Plummer have reached a settlement in a grievance filed by the Bucs that sought to recover $7-million of a signing bonus paid to the player for a contract he failed to fulfill.

Instead of the full sum, we've confirmed the sides have settled the case for roughly half, or $3.5-million. Wednesday's hearing before an arbitrator in New York has been canceled. Plummer faced an uphill climb had the case gone before the arbitrator given the precedent set by other cases.

The Bucs filed the grievance last summer when Plummer failed to report to training camp after his trade from the Broncos earlier in 2007. The Bucs continued to have conversations with Plummer aimed at convincing him to join the team, but Plummer declined and remained retired.

The contract, re-negotiated with the Broncos in 2005, called for Plummer to play through 2009. The trade from Denver to Tampa Bay gave the Bucs all the rights provided under his contract, including the right to enforce its forfeiture clause.

Also, the Bucs confirmed today what we told you some time ago: The team will in fact receive a 2009 salary-cap credit for the amount recovered, in this case, $3.5-million.

finally bucs are done with this stupid b*tch

Saints' DE Smith signs 6-year, $70M deal

The Saints locked up one of their cornerstones on Wednesday, signing DE Will Smith to a 6-year, $70M contract extension that includes $26M guaranteed, NFLNetwork's Adam Schefter reports.

The deal makes Smith the NFL's third highest-paid defensive end, behind Minnesota's Jared Allen and Indianapolis' Dwight Freeney.

Giants Super Bowl Rings Stolen

2008-06-11 02:30pm

A number of Super Bowl rings belonging to NFL Super Bowl champs the New York Giants were stolen from a jewelry company in Attleboro, Mass. over the weekend, authorities said Wednesday.

Also taken in the $2 million heist were gold, gems and other valuables, authorities said.

Thieves managed to disable the alarm system at E.A. Dion Inc., then cut a hole in the roof and take off with a 1,000-pound safe, police said.

Giants players and coaches recieved their rings last month, but the rings that were stolen - worth $25,000 each - were to be given to some staff members.

Maybe those losers coulda done something good in life to become as successful as them. Otherwise, in no way do they deserve what they EARNED.

Also, it's funny those rings were made in Massachusetts
