A few considerations on Wii fans reaction after The Conduit announcement...

Here is what everyone but you didn't miss: I'm not judging the game (where do I say it can't be good?), I'm judging the people claiming it's the FPS of the year.

atr the mo the tech demo has me interested. if they can get all that working in a game properly then that will be kewl. a custom built wii engine would be very nice...certainly nicer than the current model of using PS2 tech and xbox tech and trying to crowbar that onto the wii (which always falls flat on its face).

so im excited about the engine and i hope the devs continue to improve it and licence it out to other devs too. if it means that ti allows other devs to use the wiis hardware more efffectively without them needing to get into the nitty gritty then im all for it (lets face it...despite its succes, 3rd parties still arent giving it the wii the necessary attention in terms of finances and time and, chances are, they will continue to use PS2 and xbox tech until the wiis time is over. quick, cheap and dirty port of technology).

as for the actual game....thats not lookin so rosey at the mo imho. ill be keeping an eye on it for a while but i dont have my hopes up. it sounds like its just going to be a run of the mill corridor shooter. some screen shots look nice but others look pretty narly. still i hope they turn it around.

The hillarious part of all this is that most of the time Wii gamers are all screamin at system wars "Gameplay=//graphics", yet when they see a half decent looking game(By Wii standards) they act like it's going to be the best game ever.

Then theres also the fact that most Wii gamers act like shooters are horrible.... But not in these topics.

If you read carefully the first post and the replies as well, you'd know I am concerned about how people are reacting so positively and imagining things just because the dev said what we wanted to hear (thirds are so lazy LOL at them!), while the footage released is a joke and doesn't live up to their words. OK, now that I know what you mean, I'm starting to agree with you... You seemed like XBOX or PlayStation fanboy for a minute, but you have to admit that it is good to get third party support let alone an exclusive FPS that does not look half bad.

the engine has a lot of promise but so freaking what? I didn't buy a Wii for graphics and i'm not changing my mind anytime soon. Do I hope this game to be good? yes but then again i wish every game was good :|

Fortunately, there was at least this one topic admitting The Conduit doesn't look good at all, after the first boom of insane topics. It's nice to see not everyone can be driven crazy so easily, because you scared me at first. A lot. So, I have a few things to share, and please, don't bring the engine as an excuse here, there is more to be taken with a grain of salt than those promised all mighty graphics. Let's get started.

1. "THIS IS THE GAME I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!"

We know nothing besides promises. The whole article was more like advertising than actual information. They praised the game a lot, but... for what exactly? No info on gameplay, horrid pics. That's it, start the hype.

2. "Horrid pics?! This looks fantastic!"

Maybe you need a pair of glasses or an extra eye. That's all there is to be said here.

3. "But this game is inspired in the greatest FPSs of all time!"

I don't remember this being the failproof quality formula. Those greatest FPSs of all time weren't a mix of previous achievements, so The Conduit is pretty much going against what made those FPSs the great games they are. Right now, The Conduit looks like a mess, each picture seems a totally different (and bland) game. Talk about lack of identity...

4. "It's still early in development!"

Not my problem. High Voltage claims to be achieving something never-before-seen on Wii, and all they bring to prove it are a bunch of terrible pics? They're relying too much on mere "potential" here, as they wait for a publisher, one more reason to take it with a grain of salt.

5. "You know it's going to get better, you saw the engine."

It's definetely going to get better, but now it's you who is starting to relie on mere "potential". Until they actually achieve those "360 quality graphics", there's no reason to drool about it. Then again, don't get fooled by an engine. Sounds like they're going too much on the technical side, so even if they achieve gazillions of effects, it will still look awful without solid art direction - which is lacking right now. Take the engine video for example: it showcases a bunch of effects, but looks totally bland (after all, it's just a technical demo). If a whole game looks like this, then it's a just a waste.

6. "OK, but do you really expect the Wii to be maxed out so early in its lifespan?"

We are not early in its lifespan anymore. Of course, I don't expect The Conduit, or any other game this year for that matter, to max out the Wii, it looks way far from it right now, but I guess we all agree the excuses for bad graphics ended with SMG. So unless a game actually showcases something better than SMG, there's no reason to claim it's going to be da bomb.

7. "I don't care, The Conduit is going to rule!"

Red Steel was going to rule.

There you go. Why I am telling you all that? Because I fear a new trend is going to start: it seems all a dev has to do to get our love is to say what we want to hear. Don't fool yourself, all we can get from the IGN article is that, so far, High Voltage has put more effort dissing its competitors than making a memorable game. You may say it's too early to hate the game, but it's even earlier to love it.

Thnakfully, we have Factor 5 who seems to be willing to show us what they have been doing once it's perfectly presentable.

Opinions are based on facts, and people seem not to realize there is few to no facts to sustain any kind of premature hype.

Stop this kind of talk, because if you were right then we could just shut down every internet forum. Opinions are supposed to be discussed and that's what's happening here whether you like it or not.

you're acting like a fanboy. we do want awesome games on the wii but the graphics in this game just don't look all that. this game seriously looks like it belongs on the ps2. i'm sure this game would be somewhat interesting but i don't think it would be a success because as most developers have claimed, they cant find publishers for their mature content games for wii because publishers say that mature like games (not so much mature in ratings) does not generate a lot of revenue when put on the wii.

I honestly think that a number of you are missing the point. Yes, the game looks like it might just be a generic fps in terms of gameplay, and the graphics are not amazing by today's standards, but think about it. Everyone has been begging for modern games to come to the wii. Most games that have been released so far in all honesty, have been trash. I have always defended the wii and still am, but it is becoming harder and harder. Yes, there was Brawl and Zelda, but not too many games have made my purchase worthwhile. This game, if allowed to progress under hype, might just be able to be something great, and if it isn't, it is still a step forward. If this game sells well or it even looks like it will, we will start seeing the barrier between games on the other consoles and games on the wii lower. The only thing wrong with the wii at this point is the most important element, its catalog is terrible, but the Conduit might just start to change things if people inside the industry start seeing us say how badly we want this type of game. Nintendo views us in America as a secondary audience and their first priority is Japan, maybe some of you don't feel the same way but I think gaming in general has progressed here into just as much of a medium for serious, high quality entertainment as the movie industry. Light-hearted movies and comedies have their place, but epics and dramatic movies are needed too. All I'm saying is, Nintendo by themselves just aren't enough for me anymore and probably some of you as well, but more great third party games can start to come to this system if people stop looking for the next great innovation in gaming and look just at trying to bring this console's catalog up to date. And for those of you who try to tell me that the wii has enough mature titles are just trying to make themselves feel better because No More Heroes is only one, Metroid is two, Zelda is three, and MoH:H2 might be considered four, especially for finally having a good online component. There are other good quality games, but you can't really say that brawl is a seriously themed game. That is another thing, online has become a major component in games over the last 10 year or so and I know that I personally consider it a requirement in almost all full price games. Anyway, I need more than a handful of games to make this buy worthwhile. I see where your arguement is coming from, but all I ask is that people stop putting the game down until we at least have had a hands-on preview or two.

How is that an assumption? Have you any idea of what they are doing? They could have shown their engine before High Voltage showed theirs if they wanted.

Anyway, once again, specially for both of you: I'm am not commenting on the game, but on people's reaction, as they are ignoring a lot of things here. If you aren't mindlessly hyping it, but being optimistic (note the difference), then this topic is not directed to you.
