I thought that Super Mario Sunshine was tons better than Galaxy...and maybe a bit better than Galaxy 2.
I didn't mind the blue coins at all, and I think that's why a lot of people disliked it.
I think the levels were always really fun and had the perfect challenge to all of them.
On the other hand Galaxy 1 & 2 were really easy IMO

I liked it better for how open Sunshine was, its hub world was incredible, while Galaxy's was virtually non existent. I also liked that they made a decent, though very simple, story for a Mario game, where as Galaxy just didn't even bother. On the other hand, Sunshine had some horrible camera bugs and its level design feels lazy in comparison to Galaxy's.

Not at all. It's true that Sunshine offered more of a challenge than either Galaxy, but the levels were more creative and the gameplay mechanics far more fun than the FLUDD stuff in Mario Sunshine. Sunshine also had no variety in levels (all tropical all the time) and some of the worst boss battles in Mario history (cleaning the eel's teeth). I still remember when I preordered that game - I got Luigi's Mansion for free as a bonus offer. To date I've still had way more fun with Luigi's Mansion than Mario Sunshine, and it was my bloody preorder freebie.

I think it's a better made game then either Galaxy game but you have to look at it from the viewpoint "who were they aiming for?"

Mario Sunshine was meant for the player who had "graduated" from other Mario games and it provided more of a challenge. It was aimed at the core of the Gamecube which was the veteran Nintendo players who wanted more.

Mario Galaxy 1&2 were meant for complete beginners who had never played that style of game before or even any kind of game before. It was aimed at the core of the Wii which are children and casuals who needed simple gameplay and easy controls.

Mario Sunshine hit it's mark better then Galaxy did because while Sunshine was aimed for the veteran players and bought by the veteran players Galaxy was aimed at the casual and they didn't really like it that much leading to much lower sales then anticipated.

Mario Sunshine did everything better then Galaxy but you can't fault Nintendo for the direction that they used for Galaxy, they were going for the Wii's core and the core just didn't want it.

No, not even in the slightest. I thought Sunshine was crap then, and even bigger crap now. Galaxy, and especially 2, are exactly of how I think 3D platformers should play.

I have to admit, I have gained more of an appreciation of Sunishine recently, but no. I think both Galaxy games are better than 64 and Sunishine, with SMG2 being easily the best game in the series, and even my favorite platformer ever. Sunsine and 64 both have issues which make it kind of iffy when it comes to placing one above the other. 64 had absolutely horrible camera and controls. Sunshine had some issues with those things, with the Ferris wheel mission in Pinna Park being one of the lowest points for the series for those reasons, but outside of that mission, it never got to the level of frustration came with 64's camera and controls.Sunshine definitely had a superior mixture of exploration and platforming elements, which is something that 64 didn't really get right IMO. I'd also say that, outside of the Ferris wheel mission, the biggest problem I had with Sunshine is the parts in the game which focused on cleaning up a lot of stuff on the ground and walls, especially when there were whole missions which revolved around that idea. I don't really mind FLUDD as much as other people do, but that part of the game was more tedious than anything in any of the 3D Mario games. But if I had to rank them, I'd probably say SMG2 >> SMG >>>>>> SMS > SM64.

Sunshine was (and still is) the weakest link in the main Mario plaforming series. Doesn't make it a bad game, though. I kind of wished there was a little more variety in the levels.

Galaxy and Galaxy2are harder and better made but there's just something about sunshine i liked.

sunshine has an interesting and fun dynamic (FLUDD) and also has cool looking worlds, and the whole Island resort thing worked well in my opinion.

i'd think Glaxy is better, but not much mkore so than Sunshine.

To this day I still have only 118 Shine Sprites. This almost bothers me. And Galaxy is better than Sunshine by a mile. SM64 beats them all because it scored 11/10 in nostalgia. It will always be better to me no matter what. :P

Super Mario Sunshine's probly my favorite out of all the 3D Mario games.

Mostly because of the difficulty, it's by far the hardest and most challenging mostly because of the Blue coins and some of the levels where Shadow Mario steals F.L.U.D.D were quite hard too. I spent so much time playing it probly more then any other Mario game simply because it was so hard finding all the Blue coins, I actually had to look up a strategy guide online to find them all though I tried on my own for months and months first. The only thing that was really hard about Super Mario Galaxy 2 was The Perfect Run level, other then that the game was pretty easy for me and Super Mario Galaxy's even easier and Super Mario 64 easier still.

That doesn't mean I don't like any of the others any less or that I didn't enjoy them as much, Super Mario Sunshine was just more rewarding for me and I feel like I got more out of the experience. I like to be constantly challenged with games and put in situations where I really have to push myself to succeed and Super Mario Sunshine did that for me. The others are still great games and really fun but I didn't get the same kind of experience from them.

Super Mario Sunshine was also the first 3D Mario game where Yoshi was playable, the hub world was great and a joy to simply mess around in, it has a decent story for a Mario game it's not just about Peach getting kidnapped by Bowser, lots of variety in the levels and what you have to do to get the Shine Sprites, Bowser actually talks, F.L.U.D.D's an amazing addition that only enhances the experience, it's very challenging, the Bosses were great and very memorable, the soundtrack is amazing like any other Mario game and the graphics still hold up pretty well today especially the water.

I'd love it if Nintendo made Super Mario Sunshine 2, it'd be an amazing sequel.

nah. sunshines problem for me is it was too normal. it made way too much sense and it always felt somewhat limited in design because ninty were trying to keep it sane. my fav bits of sunshine were the crazy fludless levels (though fludd didnt bother me at all). sunshine was still a very good game mind. but it lacked that absolute nonsensical bonkerdness of mario bros 3 and world. galaxy doesnt quite reach those crazy heights...but its closer.

I always wondered why people preferred Sunshine's difficulty to the Galaxies, one of the most bizarre things.

It's like Hey, wouldn't it be better if instead of actually getting a good challenging level we just throw random coins all around a world and give the player no sense of direction at all so they have to just explore everything until they find it? And then they know where it is and it's easy every time afterwards?

Yah, way better then having an actual platform challenge where you have to use tight controls and sharp reflexes to get through the game.

Of course they're all good! But on a Nintendo scale, that's what we're going at, like how Spirit Tracks is one of the weaker Zelda games in the Zelda universe, yet one of the best DS games to date. Sunshine is in itself a great platformer, but man does it suck compared to the Mario platformer universe :(

I liked Sunshine more than the majority of people liked it, but I LOVE the Galaxy games. Galaxy and Galaxy 2 were both (imo) better than Sunshine. I do like the the hub world of Sunshine though. As for 64, I enjoyed a lot but I think I like the Galaxy games more.

Sunshine was pretty damn underrated. I don't understand a lot of criticisms levelled at it. The camera angle was bad occasionally, but I can't say I found Galaxy's camera angle much better, as it was way less flexible. There were some situations in galaxy where you wanted to change the angle but couldn't at all until you passed the section. I also loved how Sunshine was a lot less linear than galaxy and how with flood you could find several different ways to access the next area. Sometime you could just exploit a glitch to get to an area you weren't meant to which I loved doing. You couldn't really do this in Galaxy due to the game being better designed.
