sadly, it's one of those love it or hate it games, so there is no middle ground on this one.
As for me, I LOVED it.

I love stylised games... and films
this was that. Some people love it, some people hate it. Reminded me of cowboy bebop (which I love)
It's probably the most overrated game I ever played. It has some good aspects but there just so much wrong with the game. How this ever scored higher than Metroid Prime 3 on Gamespot I'll never understand. It's pretty fun at times though.
It's almost as if people look past all the flaws just because it has blood and gore. It's sad really...

I agree with all of this
beat three bosses and put it away, at least it's only 30$
i will not finish it.
why oh why did it get a 9????

No, they looks past the the flaws because under all of those flaws, there was a true gem. It was a witty game that was given to us, almost as a present for being a gamer. All of the boss fights were unique and each character was entertaining in their own way. The over the top blood and gore made sure that you were kept interested, despite how repetative it was. The odd jobs were dull, but all the clothes and character upgrades in strenght and hp gave enough incentive to have you go back for some quick cash. There was also loads of collectables throughout the game. From those lovikov balls, to the clothing, to the beam katanas. It was a fun game that didn't take itself seriously, and that's why it's easy to love.
But I could see why you wouldn't like it. I have to agree that the game lacked that final polish.

I agree it has many flaws, but its literally a pick up and play game and its just fun to play. It also doesn't feel repetative because the game itself is a good length (beat it in about 10 hours)
I can see why people would think its over rated. As you said, it has many flaws, but its still really fun to pick up and play imo. The controls don't suck either, uses waggle but nicely and limited.

Actually, the motion controls are practically pointless. You can swing up when the arrow on the screen points down and still get the move. I find the action to be average at best, and unfortunately nothing else gameplay-wise makes up for it. To be frank, the gameplay just plain sucks.
The strongest aspect of the game is its presentation, which can make or break the game for anyone depending on if you like that kind of thing. I happen to be pretty disinterested in the whole thing, so that leaves the gameplay to make the game for me. Like I said, the gameplay is terrible; the city is pointless, the enemies are mostly the same, and the motion controls are pointless. The bosses seem to be the best aspect of the gameplay, but I haven't faced all of them yet. It's extremely difficult for me to pick the game up when I know I have to trudge through so much muck to get to the few fun parts.

This summarizes it for me as well.i loved nmh, every second of it
the game play and controls were tight, the diolog and writing was pure gold
and it was just ozeing with style
the only negative was the city

I personally love No More Heroes.
I believe that No More Heroes appeals to certain people I give it an 8.5 even though my opinion doesn't mean much.

How about the bad framerate? The laughable collision detection? The repetitive gameplay? The short length? Pointless motion controls?
The game is good, but it is by no means great.
The only time my frame rate really dropped was when I would kill 7+ enemies in one swing, and it didn't really affect the game much because I wasn't moving.
The rest of that was put in deliberately.

NMH was fun but it shouldn't have scored higher then MP3. yet another reason you can't trust gamespot

How about the bad framerate?
It was pretty much only bad in the city
The laughable collision detection?
Where, besides in the city?
The repetitive gameplay?
It had a repetitive formula, as in the order you do things, but the gameplay was varied enough.
The short length?
On the short side, but not that bad compared to games today.
Pointless motion controls?
How were they pointless? Seemed like a good mix of button mashing with motion complementing it to me.
The game is good, but it is by no means great.
It's by plenty means great. Possibly not superb.

Those I can agree on. When I first "hit" a car I said "what the hell just happened?" And the framerate at times was pretty bad. The gameplay was repetitive, but thats a no brainer. The motion controls I thought was quite intuitive. Would you rather that or a wagglefest?
The main reason I love it (Not the blood and gore for my copy didnt even have it) is for the ending. Its just so wierd and ****** up.
Suda is an ARTIST. You have to look at it as an artist to enjoy this game. And you got to have a sense of humor.
It's a PARODY of GTA (witch is a parody of NY). The difference is that GTA is trying to be all cool and realistic with realistic weapons, cars and all that stuff.
But since NMH is a parody of GTA (and others) it's not trying to be cool. Travis Touchdown is trying to be cool but he's a real otaku-looser and he's crazy roaming around killing people with a laser beam sword and has totaly lost it. And that's funny. Suda made this game almost perfect. He SHOULD have fixed some minor bugs, but overall it's a art-game, just like Cho aniki and Ai cho aniki. You CAN play it and you WILL like it. But only if you got some distance.
Downer EU and Japan lost the blood. I don't know why Suda decided to drop the violence. I mean, no kids who wants to be cool plays NMH anyway. It's to unrealistic with this beam sword, humor and retro stuff. It's an artsy game and "cool 13-yrs old kids" can't stand that. They want GTA4.

It's a satire of gaming in general, not just GTA.
So far, the presentation is extremely unique, which says a lot. But I agree, the gameplay is a drag waiting to get to the boss levels.
The best way you guys have summarized it (IMO) is asking how the hell it scored higher than Metroid Prime 3, which is clearly an undeniably slick AAA game by comparison.

Actually, from what I've heard, the blood was added to the US version.

The framerate dips considerably in many spots. It's bad in the city as you cited. But it's also drops a lot when many enemies are on screen. When you kill multiple enemies at the same time, it's just plain ridiculous.
The collision detection is terrible everywhere. When you hit another car, you just stop 10 feet in front of the car. I've never seen collision detection that bad in all my years gaming. If Travis runs into something, you get the exact same effect. When I played the GTA games, I felt like I was a part of the world. When I played NMH, I felt like everything around Travis was just setpieces.
Now was the gameplay varied? The only variation was when they forced you to do all the uninteresting minigames. All the combat is the exact same thing for the whole game. You mash the buttons, swing the Wii remote in the indicated direction, and then repeat. The wrestling moves aren't even worth the effot of doing.
The game is pretty short. I beat it in only 10 hours and there was no reason to go back.
The motion controls are definately pointless. They tell you to swing in a certain direction. But you can swing in the exact opposite direction and the motion will still register. I know this is a limitation of the Wii remote but the developer should have considered this and implemented a better system.
The game has its merits such as the characters, art style, story, etc. But there's just too many negatives to call it a great game.

I don't think so, the game was designed with the U.S. in mind.
