Surprise! The rumors that all three Metroid Prime games would receive a compilation release in the US with the "Wii-applied" control scheme were true.

This might come as a blow to Metroid fans who were really looking forward to a fourth game; however, Nintendo of America makes the point that not everybody who owns a Wii owned the GameCube. They consider this a chance for everybody to get on the same Metroid page at the cost of only one game as opposed to having to shell out for Corruption and the Wii-released Prime and Echoes. And before you start flinging cans of soda and empty chip bags at your computer screen, the control scheme is actually pretty fun.

Oh, and there's multiplayer, too.

What Is It?
Metroid Prime was released for the Wii in Japan this March, while Metroid Prime 2 will be out later this year, both with new Wii controls replacing the original GameCube ones. Rather than simply porting those titles, however, Nintendo has decided to do American audiences one better by combining the Wii-released games with Metroid Prime: Corruption for a compilation release.

What We Saw
I visited Nintendo's offices to play through the very beginning of Echoes just to see how the Wii controls stacked up and then dove into four-person deathmatch multiplayer.

How Far Along Is It?
Metroid Trilogy is due out August 24, so I'd say fairly final.

What Should Change?
Nothing New, Really: Don't get me wrong - the control scheme certainly makes Prime and Echoes feel different. But there isn't any new content added to any of the games, which could be a real bummer to people who already shelled out and played through all three games.

Not A Seamless Experience: When you load up Metroid Trilogy, you can access all three games from a hub individually. You don't have to beat Prime to unlock Echoes or finish Echoes to play Corruption and what you do in one game doesn't have an impact in what you do in other games. You could even play like 20% of Echoes and then double back to Prime whenever you got bored. It's convenient, I suppose, but I think it makes the plot feel disjointed. Or, you know, unimportant since they're not trying to preserve continuity.

What Should Say The Same?
The Wii Controls: They feel good, they play well and they cut back on some of the menu selection and scan point operation tedium. For example, to select the scanner, all you have to do is hold down the minus button to pull up a heads-up display. From there, you just point at the item you want to select it and then point that item at whatever you want to scan - very painless and very quick, which is going to make it easier to absorb what story there is through scan points.

The Multiplayer: The multiplayer from Echoes is back and immediately accessible from the hub with no gameplay prerequisites. It's a little sad that it's local-only four-way-split-screen, but there is something to be said for having four people flailing around with Wii Remotes trying to shoot each other or drop bombs and bounce to safety while in ball form. Also, you can totally screen-watch to see who just picked up invincibility and thereby avoid making a tactical error in attacking them.

Myriad Tweaks: Trilogy supports 16:9 widescreen. They've added bloom lighting to all three games. Doors open faster. Loading times are faster. Samus can now do that ball-form jump where she drops a bomb and - with a well-timed Wii Remote flick - get extra air when it goes off in all three games. It might not seem like any one of these things really matters, but altogether, the tweaks go a long way toward making the games feel good and play well.

Tweaked, But Not Too Much: Nintendo says the tweaks to the control scheme don't compromise the difficulty in the game and that they've preserved the puzzle element in all the games. I believe them, because Samus' ball-form jump from Corruption could in theory wreck some jumping puzzles from Prime and Echoes. But during my hands-on time with Echoes, I didn't feel like anything had gotten easier. It just got prettier; and while that made it a little less frustrating in difficult jumping sections, it wasn't less challenging.

Collectibles Give Old Hands Stuff To Do: Throughout all three games, you can pick up different colored badges to buy collectibles like a Mii bobble head for Samus' dashboard in her ship or unlock the game's original soundtrack.

Final Thoughts
I'm pleased with Metroid Trilogy. I like multiplayer and I like getting three games for the price of one. I wish that Nintendo were using this time to make a sequel instead of remake some ****cs. But at least they're doing them well. And if nothing else, I can easily delude myself into thinking that Trilogy is just a way for Nintendo to clear its throat braving a Metroid Prime 4.Kotaku

I took out the picture of the fan-made boxart... Sorry about any confusion. ^^

You know I was just thinking about thatfor a moment before I read the thread. I think that's the way Nintendo of America will reveal the New Play control Metroid Prime games by a boxset with Metroid Prime 3 in bonus. That's why there's no dates for the NPC Metroid Prime yet. I'll get this boxset for sure if it's really true.

So they're simultaneously screwing over the people who already played 1 and 2, AND the people who already bought Corruption? Nintendo: constantly raising the bar in cash-cow milking.

Then people who already bought 3 will just have to buy the whole trilogy if they just want 1 or 2. They should just bundle the first 2.

I see what the problem is here.

Metroid Prime 3 ($50) came out in 2007, and New Play Control MP1 and MP2 would be resold at $30. This amount would be a total of $110 before tax. We're just now being informed all three are coming in one package, And now all three are going to be bundled together, and most likely a price cheaper than $110.

Admittingly, Nintendo really is screwing some people over. This is no coincidence in regards to the "convenient" timing.

Which means it'll be $60 in Canada. That means Canadians who already made the mistake of buying Corruption will be punished by Nintendo by having to pay over $124 to play all three. I am very angry at Nintendo right now.

It's 3 games in 1 for $50 and both NPC Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are in. For this price, it's bargain. Metroid Prime 3 alone is still in some place around $50. For me, I'msold.

I already bought Corruption, as did many others.

I'm not paying $50 again (or more likely, $60 more) for a game I already bought. I don't pay $100 for a game. I leave that to the Australians.

Let's see. They could offer NPC games for $20, or even $15. That would get me to buy them. Some people only want one of the older games. Many people already bought Corruption. I don't like being forced to buy a "great deal" bundle, when they could have offered them separately for cheaper.

The thing is, having the games offered as a bundle is why it is soo cheap. Separate game boxes, manuals and discs add to the final cost.

Milkage? I don't know.

It's rebooting the sales of Metroid Prime 3.
It gave the NPC Metroid Prime together not seperately.
The good price of 3 games in 1.
Metroid Prime 3 alone is still in most place at $50.

It would be milkage to see NPC Metroid Prime 1 and 2 seperately at $50 each like in Japan. If Pikmin 3 comes, I think NOA would do the same thing by putting all 3 games in 1.

BTW, I don't own Metroid Prime 3 so it's still sold to me.

I said they COULD do that. Let's be honest. What's accounting for the bulk of the price in the trilogy is Corruption, not the NPC games. So why not offer the NPC games minus the price of Corruption tacked on?

But no one's forceing you to buy it. :|

staindcoldlp
Very cute. You know very well what "forced" means in this context. It means that a consumer who plans on purchasing, say, Echoes NPC has only one possible option in front of them. This consumer is effectively being forced to pay $50 for this game, because they have no other retail options. They are forced to buy the bundle, if they want the game. It's a common way to speak of retail bundling: either the interested consumer has "options" or they are "forced" to go with the only option available.

I like this offering. I never finished Prime 1 and Prime 2. Although I spoiled the endings for myself by watching online videos. Prime 3 I already have and finished, so I won't be playing that part of the package that much. Finally, I can play aWii First Person game that has local multiplayer! There are some, but they suck! However, didn't the multiplayer from Prime 2 blow any way? What...now it's better simply do to Wii controls? Nonetheless, this package has alot to offer...I will definitely get this!

I'm about to go trade in Corruption, before Gamestop reduces the trade in value due to this Trilogy.

The total price of MP3 + Trilogy is either $113 or $124.30.

The trade-in value of MP3 was $12 on 3/13/09.

So you are willing to pay $101 to $112.30 to play 2 gamecube games with pointer controls?

[QUOTE="clicketyclick"]So they're simultaneously screwing over the people who already played 1 and 2, AND the people who already bought Corruption? Nintendo: constantly raising the bar in cash-cow milking.

Hardly screwing you over. This collection is akin to Orange Box, no one is forcing you to play these games over again, or buy the bundle. It's more for people who've not been introduced to Metroid Prime. (Remember the GC had only 20 million people, Wii has 10 times that... ok I exaggerate, but still...)

If it were akin to the Orange Box, they'd be offering the complete set for $30 and each game separately for $10-20. So no, it isn't like the Orange Box. Read my explanation of what "forced" means on the previous page. Already dealt with. You don't need to "remind" me that not everyone had a GC, because I'm one of them. I wanted to buy MP1 and MP2 with pointer controls, but I already bought MP3. I'm not buying it again.

You could most likely sell MP3 and recoup 60-70% of the cost. Then put that money towards the 3-in-1 disc. Nintendo would have sold MP1 and MP2 at the same price as the other NPC games. So whether or not MP3 is thrown in is irrelevant as far as the cost is concerned. Taking that into account, you are getting the two NPC games for a lil bit cheaper then you would have if you bought them separate.

So you rather have them offer NPC MP1 for $30 and NPC MP2 for another $30?

Blast! My impatience for obtaining greatness backfired on me here. If it wasn't for the fact that I already have Corruption, I would jump on this in a heartbeat! Corruption has been around the $50 mark since its launch, and now Nintendo's throwing the first two games in the series, Wii controls intact, to the bunch as pretty much a free bonus.

To those that have a Wii and haven't experienced Corruption, this should be the most obvious, no-brainer must-have purchase the system has seen in some time, seeing as how you're getting one of the system's best games (#2 in my opinion, behind Super Mario Galaxy) and completing the trilogy of three of the best adventure games in past eight years in one fell, average-game priced swoop! I can't help but be disappointed in the fact that I probably won't be getting this, but this is a great move on Nintendo's end.
