yeah well its not obvious to those who dont wetch e3...the casual gamer. my parents are pretty aware that it's a new generation of handhelds and they didn't even look for info on it. hell, they consider the DSi a new generation. also, do you think the so called "casual" gamers care which generation the videogame's from? and finally, when the gameboy advance came out, was evey acting as if it was just a gameboy color revamp?[QUOTE="TriniPlayer"]I thought it was obvious that it was the next gen handheld since it got it's own lineup of games.White_wolf_eye

I pretty sure most casual gamers have no Idea what a console generation is.
The exact situation:
Core Gamer: "It's a new generation, I'll buy it"
Casual Gamer: "Oo, it's new, I'll buy it"
19061980
basicly this
nintendo should show the "casual gamer" that this is another generation console, not just another DS
I think Nintendo has already said it's a brand new handheld. Only stupid people haven't figured it out yet, you know, the ones who constantly troll the forums making new threads asking the question of whether or notit's a new handheld, when really all they need to do is look at other threads that have answered this.
So Nintendo didn't do a bad job at all. The OP's got it all messed up.

That's not what I meant at all. I meant casual ganers won't care that it's a new generation. They'll buy it just because it's new and says Nintendo on it.
i.e PS2 or Xbox 360, that didn't seem to slow them down, you know PS2 only sold 120 million. Or perhaps the Gameboy to the Gameboy Color, I think they will be fine.by not showing people that it is a NEXT GEN handheld system, come on "3DS" was smart and catchy but it makes everyone think that its just the DS with 3D capabilitys, when really its not...i think they really NEED to change its name.

You know people aren't as dumb as critics and forum dwellers think they are. Just because they don't hang out on IGN everyday, doesn't mean they cant find out about a product in other ways. Yeah there are a lot of impulse buyers out there, but that's just how some people are, they buy into the hype. But most people actually know what their getting and they will know that its not just another redesign.I pretty sure most casual gamers have no Idea what a console generation is.

This. I think casuals will easily see it's a new system once they see games that are labeled DS and games that are labeled 3DS in stores.Even if some people don't catch on right away, they'll eventually see a 3DS section in stores and it'll sink in at that point.

Everyone (well, that I know of) in Dominican Republic calls every console "Nintendo." :P
Even the PS3 and XBOX360.
My parents also called my DS "gameboy" for the first few months. They eventually saw the difference between the two.
Mom is starting to realize that the 3DS is "next generation." It's probably 'cause she never experienced real 3D, so its pretty advanced for her. :P
hmmm I am not sure if I agree or not. There seems to be some confusion already, so it would be interesting to see it change its name back to gameboy something but I think 3DS is good and most of the hardcore will catch on soon and the casual wont care or will notice when they see ads and it in stores.
It'll kind of be like the difference between the Gameboy Color and the Gameboy Advance. They still had Gameboy in their names but they were totally different.
But the problem this time is that they designed the damn thing so similar to the DS that confusion is the only natural reaction. Look at Gamespot, a gaming site, they have been saying that the 3DS was another itteration all the way TO E3. But people will eventually catch on, like the guy above me...probably when they see the big red 3 added to the case.

haha I hear ya about it looking VERY VERY similar to the DS but I don't want them to change it as it looks like a DS but a bit better with some of the mods.

idk i liked psp gos design alot, my cousins thought that the psp go was like the next gen consule, and whne i told theem about the 3DS they said they werent ganna get it because it was teh same old stuff as teh normal DS, that really made me mad because they already had psp 3000's

LOL! That's funny. The design of the 3DS doesnt need to change cause its already so darn great. The PSP Go is a failure, tell your cousins that ;). I love my PS3 and Sony has been doing great lately, but the Go is just a big mistake. How would you make something like the Go have two screens? How would you use it to touch and have cameras on both sides and so on. it is just not what fits the purposes of a DS. Things should not be changed just for the sake of change.

I get ya, but I wouldnt change the next nintendo console to a crappily built console like MS's just so it is different. haha I know what you mean, but I enjoy a comfertable and versatile system that doesnt have the screen exposed to get scratched either ;).
To the casual's, this is true. Nintendo have done this before though. Gameboy Colour - Gameboy Advance. Both different, though similar names. So Nintendo will try their best to push this onto T.V screen in peoples homes and they'll have to do something that will show them its not just added a 3D display onto a DS.

The DSi XL is for people that had trouble seeing on the small DS, DS Lite, and DSi screens. It is also for people that like having people look over their shoulder when they game.[QUOTE="NaveedLife"]

just for record: i really hate the PSP's design, i can't get comfortable with it, and the Go made it even worse for me. so please no.Well, they have been working on the 3DS for 6 years now, I think it's time. Soon the 3DS will lead to new and better technology, even if the 3DS itself isn't a new system generation.
I thought it was obvious that it was the next gen handheld since it got it's own lineup of games.TriniPlayerI wouldn't have known it was a new generation. I was under the impression it was just a 3D DS with it's own line up of 3D games. It wasn't until E3, when actual games were shown with improved graphics that it was evident it was a new gen of hand held systems. I'm not a casual follower of games either, I eat up sites like this, Kotaku, NeoGAF, and Destructoid, so it was not apparent (and really still isn't to those casual followers) that it was a whole new generation.
Well the people you have experience with may be dense, but that's not reality. The mass consumer doesn't just buy whatever, if that were the case the Vii would have sold millions. Especially in this world where information is simply a click away, anyone want to know about the 3DS, all they need to do is hit the google search bar. Its not like back in the day, where gaming wasn't mainstream entertainment and the only source of info was gaming magazines and gamers themselves. People can and will find out everything they need to know, so they will know exactly what the 3DS is.not from my experience.

Yeah, the big screens are actually quite a bit more enjoyable than the smaller ones.Someone should make a thread and get it stickied, saying in the title, "The 3DS is the next gen of Nintendo Handhelds". lol seriously I can't believe the amount of confusion.
Nintendo educates it's casual gamers pretty well on it's products. There will be a load of adverts that describe the new improvements of the system in a way that will get them interested.
And most traditional gamers who are interested in the DS will be well aware that it is a new console rather than just a minor update.

lol that is reality, and the people i know are just as dense as anyone else.
You seriously care about the name? Most people don't even know what DS means. If they do, it only means Dual Screen. That fails to mention it having a microphone and a touch screen, yet everyone who sought out to buy one or has one knew that before they bought it. People won't blindly buy game consoles, they'll know what it has before buying it. Rheiken
lol alot of people that didnt buy nintendogs dont even know it has a mic, or that you dont need a headset to talk to people.
The OP is actually pretty spot-on.
You guys cant argue from the, "if you had watched E3....", or "Nintendo *said* it was next-gen", because not everybody follows video games like we do. With all the different DS's out there, you'd be hard pressed to know that this is a new generation handheld just by the name.
Its all marketing. Ideally, if everybody was knowledgeable, or had the motivation to become knowledgeable about products they have an interest in buying, there would be absolutely no need for marketing at all.
I dont think Nintendo have done a good job at all about making it known that this is not just another version of the DS. Thats evidenced by all the people that are still unaware. But to be honest, there's still plenty of time. We're probably not gonna get the 3DS til early next year, so there's 6 months+ for Nintendo to get the word out and do some better marketing for it. Nintendo is usually quite good in this area.
Yeah, I see how people could think that. I'm just saying, people knew the difference between Gameboy and Gameboy Color, as well as GBA and GBA SP. I guess there were a lot less casual gamers using handhelds back then. Anyhow, I think if anyone, Sony's in trouble with their names. If they decide on releasing a PSP2, it'll have everyone confused. PSP, PSP 2000, PSP 3000, PSP Go, now PSP 2? Don't they already have a PSP 2000, not to mention a PSP 3000? If anyone needs to rename, it should be Sony. The OP is actually pretty spot-on.
