Nintendo To Begin Charging Money For Some Online Gaming

Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service has always been entirely free of charge, but the company will soon introduce a pay-to-play service for some games, it announced at Game Developers Conference.

"Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay And Play" will let users subscribe on a game-by-game basis to certain titles. Nintendo project leader Takashi Aoyama announced the service at GDC, but did not say what upcoming games would require payment for the service, or how much they would cost.

To avoid customer confusion, Pay-And-Play games will have a red icon on the game's box that reads Pay And Play, in place of the traditional blue Wi-Fi Connection icon, which will only be used for games that are free to play.

This is a pretty big change for Nintendo, who has always been adamant about wanting online gameplay to be free. While this might attract more developers to the service with a new revenue stream, it also might confuse consumers -- and be a hassle if the payment system isn't easy. You'll use Wii Points to pay for the online gaming, so it should be interesting to see if this extends to the DS Lite or if it's just restricted to Wii.

I don't know if this is new news to any of you, but this is big to me. Hopefully if they start charging for every game they implement more features, like vocie chat and no FC's, but we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out

AndYOU

well if this really is true then well, I guess, I suppose, it might turn out to be a good thing. or not. taking out friend codes? I highly doubt that from Nintendo. and including voice chat? please. though it could happen, Nintendo doesnt want to go overboard with it's "friendly image". or does it?

in any case what would really piss us of is if Nintendo starts ripping us off and not taking out FCs as well as implementing voice chat, but instead just make us have to pay to go online. well I hope SSBB's online isnt broken

well it needs to be comparable to xbox or ps3, i mean if it is still the same barebones system they use now, its a rip, but if they somehow incorporate a friend system superior to codes, voice chat, ratings, stuff like that then we have a deal, it seems funny tho cuase nintendo has been focusing on bluring the line between hardcore and casual, this is drawing it, lol, kinda funny huh

I have a Nintendo Wii and no other game console. I enjoy the online gameplay for titles like Call of Duty Modern Warfare Reflex edition, Call of duty world at war and Super smash brothers brawl as is but not entirely. If Nintendo decides to start charging for Online gameplay I think the friend code system should be improved from adding by name like 360 or ps3. I also believe there should be some sort of communication with other players. Maybe being able to text through a keyboard or from your remote or talk through a headset like ps3 and Xbox 360. Next I think they should make the "pay to play" games with either enhanced graphics or more options of play.
