Apparently, the way EXP is given out has been slightly tweaked.
Here's a post that kinda describes it from a GameFAQs thread:
"The amount that you get, yes. If you defeat a lower leveled Pokemon, you'll get less exp than if you defeated it with a Pokemon with the same level as it. Likewise, if you defeat a higher leveled Pokemon, you get more experience.
They used it to up the challenge by making all of the trainers' Pokemon, as well as the wild ones, much higher than they used to. Now, they're usually around your levels, sometimes even higher."
This sounds great to me. It's certainly a lot better for when you've just caught a new Pokemon in an area. It'll be closer to what your current teams level would be and even if it's not, it would be easier to catch up since you're getting more exp fighting the Pokemon in the area that are the same level.
More importantly, this is gonna add a bit more challenge since you won't necessarily be that much higher than the trainers and wild Pokemon. It's really not that fun when your pretty much able to sweep through everything.
