Smash Bros Proves That "Mature" Link Was A Mistake

When you stack the "mature" Link aganst his cartoon counterpart in Smash Bros, Toon Link is clearly the superior of the two.

I think this is just the next chapter of Nintendo learning their lesson in the Zelda series and showing it's fans which version they prefer. While some people want the flash of the older Link, it's Toon Link that brings the substance.

The first step was the reemergence of the WindWaker style on the DS that was met with overwhelming praise not only from the industry but from the fans as well. It featured Toon Link and solidified his position as a key part of the Nintendo family.

Now here's Smash Bros and the two Links go head to head. While "mature" Link isn't bad he just can't hold a candle to his Toon version. Toon Link is faster then "mature" Link in every possible way which not only let's him evade and approach faster but he can also get off more attacks in the same amount of time then "mature" Link can.

"Mature" Link isn't that powerful and Toon Link doesn't trump him there but Toon Link DOES have stronger Smash attacks. Toon Link's lighter weight is compensated by his quickness and agility. "Mature" Link has some more weight on his side but doesn't have that balance on the other end.

I think Toon Link being the superior of the fighters is a way for the devs to lay claim as to who they see as the REAL Link. Which is welcome to see.

Does anyone else notice this between the two Links?

Well, in all honesty, I have had matches against people that could only beat with older Link, and matches where I could only win with Toon Link. I don't know about superior though, as older Link is indeed stronger than toon Link.

Either way, I was EXTREMELY happy when Toon Link was confirmed.

"Mature" Link FTW! Toon links rocks as well though.

Lemme put it like this: There's "Link" and there's "Toon Link." Notice how one needs a qualifier as being an alternative, while the other doesn't because it's what Nintendo is considering the standard character.

While I do agree that Toon Link is faster and more agile than Link in Brawl, I don't think he's the real Link, nor do many other people. If Toon Link was such a smash (no pun) in Wind Waker amongst fans and critics, then why wasn't TP cell-shaded? Oh yeah, that's right, LoZ die hards hated him and WW. Although Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass aren't my favorites, they are both true entries in the Legend of Zelda series. I consider myself a die hard Zelda fan, and in no way do I hate or even dislike Toon Link. I really liked the art of those games. Yeah, it's called sales. Nintendo has stated that WW nearly killed the franchise because of it's inadequate sales (even though they weren't really that bad). WW sales < TP sales. Fact. I loved WW and PH, but many people I know hated the "childish" look. A lot of hardcore fans loved it, most fans in general did not. Fact.

mature link is more marketable and has always been a big part of nintendo's franchise, hell he even crossed over into soul calibur. also if i'm not mistakened. games like ocarina of time got more praise and better reviews/ratings than wind waker I believe.

I like both. "Mature" Link isn't a mistake. I really fail to see your point in this thread. Just because Toon Link seems to be a better character in Brawl, it also seems to only be your opinion on it (although you do have some nice facts).

But the thing I fail to see is how this relates to the Zelda games and their quality. The only big thing I disagree with you is how you say "Mature" Link was a mistake. That's the part I find makes no sense whatsoever and how you somehow make it link the Zelda games.

Please, I probably missed it, but, if you would, explain to me what you're trying to say (yes I read the whole thing!). The only thing I found in the read, though, was the comparison of the two Link's in Brawl and how you like Toon Link better and how this makes "Toon" Zelda games better than the "Mature" ones.

While I personally prefer to play Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass over the others (exluding Majora's...that game rocks :P ), your argument makes little sense to me.

Nope. I'm paraphrasing a bit, not too much from what I remember, but you said "Nintendo is about to release their worst game to date." Nothing about "damaging" was said. I responded saying "You can't be talking about Brawl..." and you responded saying you were. That's also when you called it junk food as well as that you were going to be picking it up at launch. I responded by pointing out your contradiction. I don't think anything else was said...

One facter that hasn't been brought into play is that that idealistically Toon Link is lighter than Link thus making him more likely to get knocked around more. While I cannot confim this I would assume it to be true, whereas regular Link would hold his ground more.

yes, toon link's flotier than older link. but his DI is amazing, making it much easier for him to get back on the stage.

Zelda franchise has been an after thought in Japan ever since OoT and hasnt broken a million since then. Even then the franchise isnt a huge seller only two have broken 5 million, them being the original and OoT. It has and always will be a western franchise. TP outsold WW alone on the Wii, combined with the GC sales it has a good 1.5 million lead over WW. That said WW has about twice TP's sales in Japan.

Whether its something they care to change or not who knows, personally it doesnt affect my purchase but I dont see changing the franchise to appeal more to Japanese audiances will boost sales enough to justify the change which will most likely diminish western sales. Rather I think the opposite direction would be the wisest business choice. Its been said they liked the WW cell shading the most, but the game was a "failure" and fans didnt like it so they wont be returning to it on consoles at least.

Which is unfortunate because cellshading really fits the franchise, the expressions in WW were outstanding and the style doesnt have to be cartoony, games like Killer 7 and Okami prove that serious and mature games could use it just as well as cartoon styled games, a combination of WW cell shading and TP/OoT/MM realistic darker art style could really look amazing, I think much more than convential graphics that TP used.

No, that's not well known, because it's not true. If you meant to say "Most people prefer Toon Link," then perhaps you would make sense.

Big Link doesn't get an identifier because he's the default Link. However, he seems to be in solely due to the fact that he was in the first game. There would be a hissy fit from a crapload of twelve-year-olds if he got cut.ArtRat
