Well for one I thought Wind Waker was an overrated game. I think anime fans still pump it up too much just because its cell-shaded.
Mature Link is much better anyways, rather than a big egg-shaped cartoon.
[QUOTE="Jaysonguy"]Are you sure I didn't say it's the most damaging Nintendo title? I remember that
The junk food one I say all the time
Smash Bros = Pork Rind
ozzsoad
Nope. I'm paraphrasing a bit, not too much from what I remember, but you said "Nintendo is about to release their worst game to date." Nothing about "damaging" was said. I responded saying "You can't be talking about Brawl..." and you responded saying you were. That's also when you called it junk food as well as that you were going to be picking it up at launch. I responded by pointing out your contradiction. I don't think anything else was said...
Boy, if only the useless knowledge stored in my memory could put me to better use....
as i remember...
he also called it a "button masher" in one thread.
I'm not too sure about the whole Smash Bros reference because like someone already said, I highly doubt Sakurai was trying to send a message with the inclusion of Toon Link. Wnd Waker is my favorite Zelda game because it the adventure is one I would love to play. If these games were real and I got to choose which adventure I could complete, it would be Wind Waker's. Who doesn't want to like in a water world where you can sail anywhere you want and converse with the locals... and if you feel like slashin and slicin, go hit up a local dungeon. Beating Wind Waker was more fulfilling than any other Zelda game I've played - yes even OoT - and beating TP was almost a chore because it was so dang long and I was relieved to see the end. I don't necessarily prefer Toon Link over the regular Link, I just like the Toon series better than the "real" series. As a matter of fact, Four Swords - another one of my favorite Zelda games - bases it's link off the Toon one. Minish Cap also features Toon Link and that game was good too. I sure hope Brawl isn't the last game to feature Toon Link. I hope everything I said makes sense... I kinda rushed it :PZumaJones07
i forgot about four swords!!!
i loveeeee that game! it was so.... so.... so.... i dont know! i just loved it!!!

[QUOTE="Sonick54"][QUOTE="ChAlDo205"]maybe you just suck with older link, ever thought of that.the_leet_kid
it's pretty well known toon link is the definite better character though.
No, that's not well known, because it's not true. If you meant to say "Most people prefer Toon Link," then perhaps you would make sense.
No, in all the "hardcore" Smash circles that break down their rankings they have Toon Link ahead.
Toon Link is lighter but covers more distance. Mature Link is just a little bit heavier but doesn't carry as well.
Plus Toon Link has stronger Smash attacks that allow him a better chance of knocking players out over Mature Link.
The two Links are close but Toon Link has the edge
What I really think they should have done is make Link's Down+B move turn him into Wolf Link from Twilight Princess (kinda like how Zelda can switch to Shiek. That would have been badass; I was really sad that they didn't do that. As it stands right now, I find Link boring and rarely ever use him.GabuEx

anyway, i'll resume quickly. yes i agree it will depend on the skill of the actual player but a character being better than an other is still true. perfect balance in a fighting game is not possible unless all characters played the same. get it?
When you stack the "mature" Link aganst his cartoon counterpart in Smash Bros, Toon Link is clearly the superior of the two.
I think this is just the next chapter of Nintendo learning their lesson in the Zelda series and showing it's fans which version they prefer. While some people want the flash of the older Link, it's Toon Link that brings the substance.
The first step was the reemergence of the WindWaker style on the DS that was met with overwhelming praise not only from the industry but from the fans as well. It featured Toon Link and solidified his position as a key part of the Nintendo family.
Now here's Smash Bros and the two Links go head to head. While "mature" Link isn't bad he just can't hold a candle to his Toon version. Toon Link is faster then "mature" Link in every possible way which not only let's him evade and approach faster but he can also get off more attacks in the same amount of time then "mature" Link can.
"Mature" Link isn't that powerful and Toon Link doesn't trump him there but Toon Link DOES have stronger Smash attacks. Toon Link's lighter weight is compensated by his quickness and agility. "Mature" Link has some more weight on his side but doesn't have that balance on the other end.
I think Toon Link being the superior of the fighters is a way for the devs to lay claim as to who they see as the REAL Link. Which is welcome to see.
Does anyone else notice this between the two Links?

i just edited my post. you can read it again if you like.
anyway, yes it doesn't matter in the case of casual play, tourney play is a different story.
I think you're reading too much into it, Jason.
I mean, that's like saying that Nintendo likes Falco more than fox because he can jump higher and his gun does more damage. Or it's like saying that Nintendo prefers Luigi over Mario because he doesn't have FLUDD.
You can look at any character and compare them with another, but it's all subjective. On top of that, saying that Nintendo likes one character more than another is completely speculation. Sakurai made Kirby a lot stronger this time around, but does that mean that Nintendo thinks that Kirby is the best franchise?
So, you may be right, and you may be wrong, but there's no way that this opinion "proves that Mature Link was a mistake". By that logic, are they also saying that Nintendo thinks that Metroid was a mistake?

thats what i said bobby!
dude first of all its just a matter of skill I know alot of people better then toon link than the are link and vice-versa this does mean one is superior over the other for example my main is Link and I never lost to toon link even though they were good using him and this doesnt mean nintendo chooses one over the other each has teh own strengths and weakeness though some people think that just becuz a chracter is hidden the automatically have more strength then other fighters like mewtwo he was one of the most secret fighters in melee but most people think is was one of the worst fighters ever but its not that its just skillSilenceHMK
so, you're telling me, the game has perfect balance? that every character plays the same?that each has the same number of advatanges and disadvantages?
secret characters have nothing to even do with it.
keep telling yourself that. and please use punctuation next time.reading your entire run on sentence was kinda irritating no offense :?

Well to be fair as I've ranted that Samus is just a pain in the tukkus to work and not worth the effort in Smash because by the time you do the final move and get further into her character the match has been going on for SO FREAKING LONG. lol
I do think that Kirby was beefed up this time because of the developer behind it. They completely played favorites there.
As for the Links I'm sticking to my story. They could have taken some off of Toon Link and not had anyone bat an eyelash. Instead they pumped him past the Mature Link. I sense for something other then plain oversight.
You make good points though
Dude, are you serious? Adult Link looks like a warrior (not to mention he can turn into a friggin wolf). Toon Link looks like a kid whos wearing a real cheap costume.
I think it all comes down to this:
Who do you think is more of a warrior?
I say Adult Link, by far.
Who do you think is more of a warrior?
Snyder_Trigger
So you're asking me who is more of the warrior (I'm going to guess brave and gung ho and all that jazz)
Well you have an adult going on a quest slaying monsters and solving puzzles
OR
You have a kid doing all the same things
I'm going to go with the kid because he's a kid and yet he's doing everything the "adult" is doing.
But that's past the point because I'm talking about how they're represented in Smash Bros. Toon Link has attributes that are better then mature Link.
You bring up the Wolf but that doesn't rear it's head in Smash Bros, although Gabu's post....
What I really think they should have done is make Link's Down+B move turn him into Wolf Link from Twilight Princess (kinda like how Zelda can switch to Shiek). GabuEx
Makes me wish he was in the planning room when all this went down.

Wow. Really? That's all you care about?
He's not talking about the appearance of the characters.
ok...I'm covering three points all at once
Jasonguy (and almost everyone else)- The reason why Mature Link is slower is because of how overpowered whirlwind is. While most people only use it as a defensive tactic, the Whrilwind can actually drag an object back to Link, who can then greet them with a smash attack. If Mature Link were any faster, it would be feasable to send out a bomb on the whirlwind AND drag the opponent back for a smash attack. I would fear being within 6 feet in front of Mature Link.
Bob- Sakurai might have produced this game, but you are forgetting a CRITICAL addition. This game isn't a Nintendo product, it's a Game Arts product. Their main series is Grandia, a very cartoony series. Plus, from the interview with Iwata, all of the main staff had played melee and were serious about improving the characters. It makes sense that they would want a chance to develop more for the Wii...
As for the discussion. no character is a mistake. Whenever i see too many Ikes online, i switch to Jigglypuff, for Wolfs and Foxes i use Captain Falcon, for Captain Falcon i use R.O.B. Take the time to see how your opponent plays before sticking with only one character. I'm not great with everyone (heck i don't even use Marth) but don't call someone a mistake just because we haven't created advance strategies yet.
Capcom challenged us when they created Dan, then we learned that Dan can win in the right hands. Those hands probably aren't yours, but when you see someone that can, applaud them, don't critisize.
Well to be fair as I've ranted that Samus is just a pain in the tukkus to work and not worth the effort in Smash because by the time you do the final move and get further into her character the match has been going on for SO FREAKING LONG. lol
Jaysonguy
I really hope that you've taken that back by now... (This is under the assumtion that you've taken more time to use samus and realize how good of a character she really is.)
Also, "get further into her charater"?!?!?!?!?
Are you serious? Samus and ZSS are two diffrent charaters and never in the game are you forced to pick one over the other. Besides if you really prefer a certain one you can fell free to turn off all smash balls and hold R while you are pressing start (or the opposite if you like normal Samus).
And smash isn't a game that forces you to "get further into a character". You play it how you want, you are not restricted by those rules...

I know that, but lets be serious here. Adult Link is a real hero, somebody that could be a leader, a warrior, and somebody you can look up to. You cant do that with Toon Link, it just doesnt happen....
Sorry Toon Link, but I aint feelin' it dawg.

Yeah but, isnt Link really supposed to be an adult in the Wind Waker world? If so, then there really isnt anything to compare them with except appearance.
If you showed a random non-gamer a picture of Toon Link beside a pic of Adult Link, then asked which one is more of a hero, I guarantee they would choose adult link. Plus, adult link has a bigger sword. Nuff' said.

Ok, I'm not getting your whole direction with why you're picking who you are. You seem to be picking the guy who can be outdone by a child yet he looks good. So that brings in my whole style/substance point back to the forefront.
If you showed a non gamer both of them and asked who looked like more of a hero they'd probably reply with something unflattering.
It's a matter of opinion of course. Some people are good with Link, others with his Toon counterpart. The really is no "best" character in Smash.rcignoni
They're ranked differently.
On a scale of 1-10 some rank higher on the scale because of their skills and some rank lower. Mature Link ranks lower then Toon Link in just about every single one you look at. From the Prima guide to the websites devoted to Smash competition.

Link is Link. He's the definition of hero, no matter his incarnation.
He's so godly, even as a child he can kick the **** out of everyone else. He bears the triforce of courage and weilds the master sword for a reason.
Besides, the things "toon" link does make alot of video game characters(or even mythological heroes) look like chumps. Link is great, all links are great.
But, Snyder, you're being superficial. You're judging a character on looks alone. Who looks more like the real hero matters little.. does yoda look like he could beat down almost anyone else in the starwars universe? No.. but he can. Looks are decieving. Though, i do prefer TP link by a long shot.

Anyways, as to the main post of this thread... I disagree, there is no hidden statement. Link is not one of the better characters, it happens in fighting games(or anything that depends on a balance).. it sucks for us die hard link fans, but so be it. He has some great advantages still, and it really makes him alot of fun(weaknesses spice things up!). It really feels alot more rewarding beating people with link, i find.
Yeah, but Adult Link's sword is obviously bigger.
And to reply to Jason:
I choose Adult Link because he is what has made the series epic. Remember Ocarina of Time? Plus, frankly, he just looks like he could kick anybody's buttocks.
Snyder_Trigger
Link is the greatest and most bad*** character ever, not just in gaming. Anyone who denies this is a D-bag :D :D
but seriously, the sword looks different because the artstyle is different. It's still the master sword, though.

Yeah. I think it's because I grew up with the cool one, that I like him so much. =P
I really think a hero should be portrayed as a hero, not as a kid.
