Yeah I was wondering if a ban was coming. I assume someone here reported him.A very naive young man he was. I don't know what he's gonna do, he was a regular here. If he tries getting a different username he shouldn't be too hard to pick out.

I hope I don't get in trouble for talking about it.

I came back to see a mess of posts in the lounge. I come in, like snowman, and see the topics change from the holocaust to love, both involving Hip. Reading through it, I thought he had some sort of sick sense of humour and he was just having fun making random statements. But he kept sticking to it...well, it's done now so no sense in dwelling in the past. Back to studying programming...:(

Well keep in mind that he has at least two other accounts if his confession was true, both of which are unbanned and allow him easy access to the forums.

This is one of those bans where I feel like yeah, he said things that probably made people think (a lot) less of him, and some of his comments may have been trolling ("you're not really in love"), but he really didn't do anything ban worthy in my eyes. But of course, we never get the full picture... it might have been a build up of past things.... who knows.

Thinking the holocaust was deserved is pretty backwards, but it's not like he was hostile about it or resorting to personal attacks or anything else against the rules. Seeing everyone's disgust was more helpful to him than getting banned, assuming the holocaust thing was the final straw....

He wasn't making jokes I don't think, he was just stating what he believed based on his religious beliefs. THIS IS WHY WE SHOULDN'T HARP ON RELIGION SO MUCH IN HERE. No matter what someone gets offended and there are casualties.

He never said the holocaust was deserved. He said it was undeserved.

And you're right. You can't change anyone's opinion by banning them, and frankly, he was banned right in the middle of a discussion which helps no-one.Now we have no way of reaching out to this kid who's caught up in a cult and is walking around with anti-Semitic opinions fed to him by his church and his parents.

Is it supposed to be a Hanukkah present to jews to know that now another little christian boy is going to grow up to be an anti-semite because no-one will allow him to put forward the notions he's been fed and have them exposed to criticism from people outside his church? GS has probably cut off one of his most significant and earnest places of interaction with people who aren't from his church and now there's no-one to get him to think critically about the views he's been brainwashed with. Great.

There's no rule against multiple accounts... The only thing with that is when one gets suspended and you sign on with another one, it's a capital offense. Unless something's changed in the last six months...

A longstanding, upstanding member of the Offtopic Forum was banned a number of months ago for merely quoting Yahtzee Croshaw. Yahtzee said that Twilight Princess was better than OoT, and to make fun of how shocking that would sound to Nintendo fans, he also added at the very end, "And Hitler was right!". So as a joke right around when that Yahtzee review came out and was the talk of the forum, the guy jokingly wrote in one of his posts, "And Hitler was right!". He was instantly banned. The mods said it was for that. I asked if I could say something on his behalf to get him unbanned but they said it was unwise because then the admins would think I'm his alt account and ban me as well.

Definitely. I count the GS Off-topic Forum as one of the biggest influences on my life when I was in high school. I got to interact with so many different viewpoints that I would've otherwise never seen at that point, and it really helped me become a critical thinker way before I normally would have. It was like three years of supplemental education that no school could've provided for me.

How is Nazi related topics surefire bannings? I don't recall that in the TOU. I know it would be offensive, but what exactly determines HOW offensive something is if the TOU doesn't say. I think that is the TOU's biggest flaw really.

That's the problem with that rule in general. I like No More Heroes. Some mom out there is appalled by the gore and violence in the game and detests everything about it and thinks no one should play it. I say its awesome, she's offended. Should I get banned for being offensive. Anything and everything anyone says will offend someone out there which is why the whole thing is stupid.

Yes but his basis was that no one stepped up for the whole "Jesus died" event so that meant wholesale extermination of the Jewish people was warranted

We didn't really know much about what the Nazis were doing to the Jews until the end of the war. We fought them because they were conquering everyone and we couldn't have that. Then we kinda stumbled upon the Holocaust and went "oh snap these guys are evil" and subsequently made them our go to guys for villains for the rest of time.

No, it's because... the jews don't control the media... that's an anti-semitic lie... that the nazis propagated to get people to agree with their annihilation... and it's a lie that Islamic terrorist groups also use... to explain why they believe that the jews were actually in control of the Holocaust... and that the jews were responsible for the holocaust... because they control the world and all the wars that happen in it... We knew enough

We housed Nazi prisoners of war in the midwest during WW2 and before they were sent home at the end of the war they had to watch footage of the the Jewish people being exterminated and how they were pushed into mass graves with tracktors and bulldozers

How is Nazi related topics surefire bannings? I don't recall that in the TOU. I know it would be offensive, but what exactly determines HOW offensive something is if the TOU doesn't say. I think that is the TOU's biggest flaw really.

But the ToU says "PATENTLY offensive," which basically means that it's obvious. I always thought of it like the replay rule in college football. There needs to be indisputable evidence to overturn the call on the field. It seems that refs don't usually stick to that part of the rule, so I think it's a good analogy for here, too.

There's no real problem with the moderation system itself, just how it's enforced. There's a huge emphasis on "grinding the queue" and dealing with as many reports as possible. This is usually fine because most reported offenses are pretty clear cut (either they're actual offenses or they're not). But for the other stuff, mods should be taking a more hands-on approach, sending a PM to people when they think there might be something unclear, explaining what the problem was and how to avoid it in the future. Some mods will say "WE DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT" or "that's what Ask the Mods is for".... I've never bought that excuse. If you don't have time to do a voluntary job right, then don't do it. It takes all of two minutes to send a PM (unless you're PMing clickety about a rule, then it takes a dozen five-paragraph essays and two weeks... I have proof! :)).

The Unification Church probably cannot be considered "Christian" the same way Protestants and Catholics are "Christian." This is not any bashing on the Unification Church, but there are certain beliefs required to be considered Christian that the Unification Church does not believe in.

BTW like every person here at GS, your not going to change his opinion esp. since he grew up and is immersed in essentially a modern day cult. No one was going to convince him. He was not showing any signs of listening to the numerous of obvious reasons why no people deserve what happened in the Holocaust.

Here is something I like about that church as I have criticised them thoroughly and I am sorely dissappointed in their rabbid anti-semitism: They believe all Christian religions should try and find more common ground.

OMG that was so much fun! I got all the achievements! Took 2092 seconds! That was awesome. Loved the game. Very funny achievements. Would be cool if it was on PSN so I could get trophies for it.

BTW like every person here at GS, your not going to change his opinion esp. since he grew up and is immersed in essentially a modern day cult. No one was going to convince him. He was not showing any signs of listening to the numerous of obvious reasons why no people deserve what happened in the Holocaust.thedude-
I agree completely concerning this guy in particular. He has nothing even close to an attitude of serious critical thinking.... You can be a critical thinker and still come to the same conclusions as you held before you started questioning, but I don't think he was willing to even start that process. He was talking with way too much confidence for that.

But I don't think you can say he's "like every person here at GS," because that's just not true. And sometimes the debate that happens on the screen can be read by someone who doesn't even show up, and it changes that person's mind.

Bleh. I can't say I'm terribly happy about this, although it's not as if I don't understand the logic behind it.

I disagree with that. It's pure conjecture as he hadn't actually fully been through a debate so it's extremely premature to say he wouldn't change his opinion. That's like looking at the 3rd inning of baseball and being like... okay I am not good at sports analogies. Basically it's like calling the match before it's finished. You could be very wrong. It's not over till it's over. It's not over till the fat lady sings.

And I swear I was on a roll. I think we were going somewhere good when his GS life was tragically cut short.

But seriously, there's a difference between a kid parroting back what he's been taught and an adult who has taken years to become entrenched in an idea.

And for the last time, he never said the Jews deserved the holocaust. He said they didn't deserve it. This was going to be the basis for my debate with him.

I'm judging by his attitude since he's been here, not just in this one case. When he gets to talking about his religion, he shows truly blind devotion. Trust me, when teenagers are like that, there isn't much getting through that wall. College will be the battering ram. I've seen it happen many, many times. I don't think he's ready.

Yeah I have a feeling college will be somewhat of a "oh snap" in his case. He's openly against any use of alcohol or drugs and very strongly so at that and I bet once he gets to college and sees how commonplace that stuff is it'll be rather shocking. Not to mention that no one at college is going to want to hear about how they're going to hell for having sex all the time before being married and how they're not really in love since Moon didn't say so, etc. Also does anyone else find this a little odd. Hip gets banned so we talk about him, a lot. Its like a celebrity died and the media won't shut up about it (speaking of which what the hell is up with The Jack5ons tv show)

Jordan and thedude are right. There was absolutely no reason on his side. He even said that he didn't want to talk about religion any more. He doesn't even want to hear people critisize anything he believes. He just blocked out everything you said click.

My hope is that since he's not willing to listen to us, that this banning will convince him that in the real world, saying "what goes around comes around" about the holocaust is not an appropriate statement.

Hate speech is hate speech, whether the person saying is thinks it is or not. And saying that Jews "pretty much" deserved what happened is hate speech no matter which way you look at it.

Other known posters on the Wii and off-topic boards. There were a few more whose names didnt stick out, but when a member of the board gets banned they tend to get a eulogy for a week or so.

But thanks to common knowledge, it would seem oath got banned not for his love of playing games he didn't pay for, but his love of linking obscure websites to break video game news.

That might or might not have been something he picked up from me. Still scares me to know that any one of my hundreds of links can get me banned.

EDIT: Yeah I was trying to find alex's name, there are two more as well, but I think they both got banned over a year ago.

The Law of Indemnity is not all bad. It calls for extreme responsibility over your actions as it may effect the course of history and your own people. Its just superstitious and ignores the basic principles of Christian salvation. ANother reason why they are only Christian in name, but not in doctrine or practice.

You are partially right clicketyclick. He was not directly saying that the Jews deserved the Holocaust, but he was saying their ancestor's actions led to that. This is anti-semetic no matter how you slice it, its just not as bad as say Nazi anti-semetism.

The Jews nor any other people deserve to be punished for what their ancient relatives did. To even suggest that the Jews as a whole people are responsible for the death of Jesus is anti-semetic. It was only a faction and even then all carried out by Roman authority. It is quite obvious they single out the Hebrew people. They do also mention WW1 victims are getting what they deserved for past ancestors as well.

No, he said they didn't deserve it at all. He was asked if he thought they deserved it and he said "heck no" and said that was because they were innocent -- they weren't the ones who killed jesus.
