I never played an Animal Crossing game before so I'm a bit hesitant on buying City Folk. A friend recommended it to me and said it was "extremely addictive." What is Animal Crossing about? Why is it so addictive? How fun is it? Will it be worth $20?

turtlethetaffer

You just go about doing daily stuff like catch bugs, earn money, get fossils... it's like a kid friendly sim game. Not for everyone, but can be insanley addictive if you really get into it. It is definitley worth 20 bucks if you get into it. The game never really ends. It could go on forever. However maybe rent it first to see if you like it?

Go with Rune Factory Frontier, it's cheap, a life sim like Animal Crossing, but its more adult/core gamer oriented!

Not to brag, but I've got a pretty killer Wii library, so you should look at my owned games list :P I've got all the heavy hitters except the SMG duo, and a lot of the best hidden gems

I'd say Animal Crossing is worth $20.00, but if I were you I might just wait for 3D village.

Thanks for the responses! :D
I found out that my nearest Gamestop has used copies for $15 so I might pick it up on Tuesday. If I like it, I'll keep it and maybe consider buying the 3DS version. If I don't like it, then I'll return it before the week ends. :)

Well there are a lot of good Wii games, but the best ones I can remember off the top of my head would be SMG 1 and 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl

The must haves are the SMG games, Okami (if you've never played it), Brawl, the Metroid Prime Trilogy (again, if you never played it.) Twilight Princess (if you didn't play it on Gamecube) some good download titles are the Mario Virtual Console games, Chrono Trigger, Final fantasy II (on the SNES), FFIII (also on SNES) Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, the Zelda games (Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask) Paper Mario... that's off the top of my head. Some other good games are Silent Hill Shattered Memories, CoD Modern Warfare Reflex, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Red Steel 2... this is all off the top of my head, there are other great games worth playing.

Does anyone know a good platformer-style game for the Wii or Gamecube? I have Super Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy; I'm really looking for a Mario game like these two.

If you want a good 3D platformer like those, go for Epic Mickey, I'm having a blast with it :)

So guys I'm in a dire need of help. My wii has been sitting there gathering dust for quiet a while now and I need a few games to keep me company until The Last Story, Skyward sword and Pandora's tower come out. I'm looking for a few decent RPGs and action/adventure games. I only have Xenoblade and Murmasa on my list so far. =o

Unfortunately your choices are a bit limited. On the RPG side, there's Tales of Symphonia 2, Arc Rise Fantasia, Fragile Dreams, which fall into the mediocre category, and Little King's Story, Rune Factory, Fire Emblem, and Chocobo's Dungeon, which are all very niche.

With action adventures there's Okami (Amazing), the Prince Of Persia series, which is more puzzle than adventure, Final Fantasy Crystal Bearers (Very mediocre), Silent Hill Shattered Memories (Survival horror), Epic Mickey (a platformer) and the Metroid games. And obviously there is Twilight Princess.

I've probably missed a few, and most of these aren't RPG's or action adventures in the strictest sense.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a great Mario platformer as well, unless you don't like sidescrolling platformers.

Hows Mega Man X for VC? I hear great things about it and want to give it a go, but I'm just wondering how hard it is, (since I could never beat Mega Man 1)

My kids want to buy me a game for Christmas, preferably one they can play with me in coop. I was thinking one of the following

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns - Wii
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Wii
  • Kirby's Return to Dreamland - Wii (if it'll get here in time)
  • Lego Pirates of the Carribean

What do you think?

My kids are 3 and 5 so keep in mind it has to be something they can play with me.

My son (3) doesn't play much but I'm sure that'll change. My daughter (5) loves Mario 64 on her DS although she doesn't really play the elevs as such, just runs around looking at things. I'm thinking Super Mario Galaxy 2 might be out as they never play #1. We did have fun playing New Super Mario Bros but my daughter spent a lot of time in the bubble "cheating" her way thru obstacles :). They both loved Kirby's Epic Yarn and enjoyed Lego Harry Potter although, for the Lego games, they tend to just run around smashing stuff up instead of playing the actual game.

Have you considered New Super Mario Wii, Mario Galaxy 2, Muramasa, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn (VERY easy to finish)?

I only have Xenoblade and Murmasa on my list so far. =oiAzure94
Have you played those yet? They are some seriously kickass titles and will definitely keep you buys until the others are released.

It sounds to me like Kirby would be the best choice. If you leave another player behind, he'll be teleported back to the main player automatically rather than dying. From what I've seen, it looks like the main player (who has to be Kirby) is the focus, while the other characters are just there for support, unlike NSMB Wii where all players have equal stature.

DKCR is a really hard game, so I don't think that's a good choice.

SMG2's co-op probably isn't involved enough to keep your five-year old occupied, unless you let her be Mario and you be the pointer. But if they never really play the first one, then yeah, it isn't the best choice (but you should get it for yourself anyway ;)).

I haven't played any of the Lego games, so I can't comment on those.

Thanks Jordan. Good to hear about DK complexity. It's really hard finding decent games for kids... as in games that kids can play. Funnily enough reviews aren't really written with them in mind :)

I think Dreamland's gonna be the go. It's just a case of seeing if I can get it in time. It's released on the 2nd of Dec but it'll take me about 2-3 weeks to import it from the UK (I'm in Aus). Anyway, enough rambling. Thanks for the feedback.

Its weird when you put it like that. Wii has lots of games that don't regular genres.

Hello,

I have never bought a CoD game before. I want to buy one for the wii, but not sure which would be better for me. I like the co-op offline mode in World at War, but like the overall presentation of Black Ops more. and i don't know about modern warfare...What would you suggest?

It would be best to get the most recent one, if you don't want to shell out the $60 for MW3 then pick up Black Ops.

Studio_Ghibli

Reflex has less modes and active players + more hackers, as every game does after its been on the market for a while.

Meanwhile, MW3 has everything + a lot more content, with spec ops and survival modes. Its just the best bet :)

Best for mindless fun between the COD's or best mindless fun game in general..? If in general, definitely No More heroes.

Got my son a Wii for Christmas, I have always been a Playstation kind of gamer. I'm looking forward to getting him into gaming, but have no idea about Wii games. I got him the wheel as he loves racing, but I'm looking for an open world off road game where he can just drive around until his hearts content without having to worry about going backwards or off the track. Any recommendations for something like that? THANKS!!

My son loved the first Cars game. He played when he was 5, and didn't want to race, so just spent hours driving all over the town and surrounding roads and countryside.

I set my little brother up on Time Trials in Mario Kart Wii, there are no opponents so he is able to just drive around as long as he wants unabated. Sure it takes him upwards 40 minutes to complete a single track. But he enjoys it. :P

You could get a good 50-100 hours of gameplay from the single player alone. It is a very good experience alone, but the online is better in just about every way.

It all depends on your preferences. I see alot of platformers on that list, is that one of your preferred genres?

I do love them, but I wouldn't say they're my preferred genre. I suppose I prefer something lots of exploration in an overworld (adventure game I suppose), or a really great story (rpg?).

I kept the games I have played and enjoyed. (I'm sure the others you mentioned are great as well, I just can't reccomend them because I haven't played them.) If you want a fantastic story, get Silent Hill. Also, RPG wise, Xenoblade is being released in North America eventually, that looks awesome. And adventure wise, try out the two Zelda games (Twilight Princess and Skyward sword) as well as Okami. All awesome.

I'm surprised that this thread isn't stickied anymore. Updates would be nice also. Here's 1 link.

I think I still have the files saved on my computer from when i tried to update it a year or so ago. GS post character limits make it a huge hassle though, and since it is no longer stickied I'm guessing it's not worth bothering with anymore anyway.

Most people found this thread through Google anyway, so the sticky didn't matter except as a visible indication that other recommendation threads weren't allowed. And that hasn't been a problem for years.....

And the Wii has maybe three more games on the way that would be worth including.

And! It's definitely a gigantic hassle.

Okay guys, just got my sister to give me her Wii considering she hasn't used it in months if not years. I was wondering what some great must have games I should get? I don't have the motion plus yet so I can't get LoZSS until i get one but what are some other great games? I like everything really but a good RPG or something compelling is what I'm looking for, thanks in advance!

What region are you in? Xenoblade Chronicles is a must have, as its one of the defining games of the system, and one of the best JRPG's this gen, however it doesn't come out in the U.S. until April, its out in the UK already.

The Last Story is another coming out soon in the US that has been reviewed well, already out in the UK.

Monster Hunter Tri is a really good Action-RPG out already, one of the best games on the Wii overall.

Silent Hill: Shattered memories isn't an RPG but is one of the most compelling games I've ever played, its simply brilliant. It IS on the short side however, but has a lot of replayability, and is dirt cheap in price now.
