Oh ya, that really worked for Dead Space Extraction, Little King's Story, Madworld, and No More Heroes.
Being a great game doesn't translate into having great sales, especially on Wii.
And if someone mentions advertisement one more time, I'll scream. First of all, the people these games are marketed to are already aware of these games and a number of these poor-selling good wii games were advertised on game sites and game news sites, which is where the target audience most likely is.
Second of all, I've never seen advertisements either on tv or online for many of the games that sell like hotcakes on Wii.
Third of all, I haven't seen tv advertisements for quite a number of pretty big games that sold well on PS360.
Fourth of all, the marketing budget is determined by how well the audience responds. If it doesn't get a good response, they pull advertisement so as to cut their losses and maximise profits - selling more doesn't necessarily translate into more profits.
What you have seen and what is could be much different.http://www.vgchartz.com/games/index.php?&results=50&name=&console=Wii&keyword=&publisher=&genre=&order=Sales&boxart=Both&showdeleted=®ion=All&alphasort=
Most of the million sellers on there have had some sort of marketing campaign with the exception of a few. Besides that Wii may need more mainstream marketing than the whole industry realizes.
They keep thinking that plastering their work on game websites will help let softcore gamers who really only find out about games through television and their local gamestop and 40+ year old individuals who certainly need regular advertisement. Most of the games that have not done well have missed a huge piece in the success formula. If there is good marketing, the game lacks polish, or the whole game concept is too niche to even grab a million buyers.
