Super Mario Galaxy. The space theme was a brilliant idea, but I don't know what Nintendo was thinking when they stripped Mario of the FLUDD - a major innovation that helped to add immeasurable depth to the simplistic Mario 64 formula. Mario Galaxy, unlike its innovative predecessors, was a major step BACK for the series.

Alright, Mario Galaxy was far from the worst title on the Wii, but the sheer caliber of the Mario name makes Galaxy's failures more noteworthy than the hopelessly awful (e.g. Carnival Games, NinjaBread Man).

As we know, a good sequel builds upon - or at least retains what makes its predecessors great. Sunshine, like any good sequel, moved the series forward by taking the solid though shallow gameplay of Mario 64 and adding the versatile water cannon, creating an abundance of new abilities and gameplay elements, and in effect making the Nintendo 64 ****c primitive in comparison.

Mario Galaxy, however, innovated little and, worse yet, failed to even retain the elements that made it's predecessor, Sunshine, stand out in the first place. Sure, Mario Galaxy had some impressive visuals and catchy beats, but the removal of the water pack that made Sunshine so much deeper and dynamic than its predecessors pulled Mario back into the dark ages.

I haven't played any of the shovelware games, like Anubis 2 or Ninjabread Man, so I don't know how awful they are.

The worst one I've played is Prince of Persia, though. That game was horrible.

In Mario 64, all Mario could do was jump. In Sunshine, however, the introduction of the water pack allowed him to jump, hover, fly, glide across water, and even go into an over-the-shoulder perspective and shoot things Resident Evil 4 style.

FLUDD is NOT like the spin or costumes. The spin and costumes played a very small role in the game (punch or kick could have easliy replaced spin, nothing could replace FLUDD)

FLUDD made the whole game feel like a completely new experience, while mario galaxy felt like just another platformer using the mario license. It was fun, but not perfect like everyone says it is.

At least somebody has some sense around here. I also thank you for bringing up a topic that I forgot to mention, the suits, which further demonstrate the massive leap backwards which Galaxy took. Not only did Galaxy fail to retain all of the new abilities introduced by Sunshine, Nintendo decided to instead reintroduce the suits... THE SUITS FROM A 2-D MARIO. Galaxy didn't fall back, kilometers, light-years, or even galaxies. It leaped an entire dimension back in time.

SMG innovates more than SMS. SMS added the FLUDD, cool idea, more gimmicky than anything. SMG made you rethink platform dynamics by adding gravity and different physics for each planet. The slight wiimote IR stuff was a great addition too. Not to mention, the space theme works a lot more than the tropical theme.

The tropical theme is just that -- tropical. The space theme allowed nintendo to branch out into a space/ice theme world, or a space/lava world.

SMS wasnt a bad game, but its inferior to SMG.

Like I said, the space idea was neat, but I would much rather see Sunshine's beautiful locales broken up into miniature planetoids between which the player could travel with the water pack.

Wow, have that many people here really had the misfortune to play Anubis II? Or are you guys just parroting?

Worst that I have played or seen in person was probably Transformers. Rented it for my 9 year old, but he got frustrated and gave up on it after about 30 minutes. Just a broken mess. Worst that I actually bought would be Mario & Sonic Olympics. It isn't terrible, but it isn't terribly good either.

sunshine was a huge dissapointment for me and galaxy was a step in the right direction. sunshine didnt even feel like a mario game. galaxy had the gravity mixed with 2d platforming and wiimote it gave me the experience that was lacking in sunshine.

I've never played the notoriously awful Wii games, but from what I collect, Balls of Fury and Cruis'n appear to be the worst ones not by Data Design. As for the Data Design games (based on IGN, the only place to submit themselves to most of them), London Taxi: Rush Hour appears to be the very worst of them all. The Kidz Sports series is supposed to be torture too.

New Super Mario Bros. was nothing but an exhibit of Nintendo's laziness. The DS could easily run a good 3-D Mario while using the touch screen in some innovative ways. Imagine a 3-D isometric Mario with Phantom Hourglass controls, allowing you to tap a location on the screen to spray it with water.

While it may not be obvious, Sunshine did leave some lasting impressions on the industry. Game of the Year winner Resident Evil 4 drew a noteworthy amount of inspiration from Mario Sunshine, as the over-the-shoulder aiming system one uses when firing a gun originates from the similar systen used to aim the FLUDD in Sunshine.
