It is a party game and it's definitely not hardcore. It purports to be hardcore because of the inclusion of some horribly geeky Nintendo characters, but it's still a button mashing party brawler.

It is aimed to a casual audience. But it has a ton of depth for dedicated ones to master.

My thoughts exactly.

If you enjoy the game and have fun don't worry if it's "hardcore" or not. It's the fun factor that matters above all anyways.

I just don't get how a game can be labeled as hardcore or casual. Those are gaming moods. It's like calling a book "sleepy" because that's how you felt while you were reading it, regardless of the content of the book.

Some people are really hardcore about Brawl and can kick my ass in three seconds because I play it very casually. I haven't taken the time to master it because I enjoy it just enough to laugh at the craziness in short bursts. And I'm sure the no-items-in-Final-Destination players can turn on items and play on a crazy level every once in awhile just for the fun of it.

Much like the rest of Nintendo's games library, it's a game that appeals to the masses yet still pleases core users. Much like any other fighter with accessible controls, like Street Fighter IV. You could label that game as a casual title because its easy to play by anyone - yet its hard to master, much like the smash games are.

I guess you have not received the memo. Fighting games need to have complex button presses, a health bar, and hard to pull off combos, to be hardcore.

It can be enjoyed by people of practically any skill level, and the series is widely loved. Hardcore isn't exactly the first word I'd use to describe it.

So the people who say no are saying that anyone has around the same shot as winning because it has no learning curve because it's a casual game? Well then you're wrong.

It isn't hardcore, you could call melee hardcore but definately not SSBB. Its a great game and I played a lot but its not competitive at all. They totally dumbed down the gameplay and made it way to slow and floaty and you get knocked out of the map way too easily. Also the online is useless.

ya i wish they didnt decide to do that with the game speed and gravity, brawl would have been perfect if it were like melee...

but hey come on, it is slightly competitve, not as much as melee though, and dont forget the cheapness that is melee ;).

SSBB is like, say Mario and Zelda. Both sides can enjoy both games equally. There is not line between. LOL at anyone who says you can button mash in SSBB though

I don't understand how you can say that. It just doesn't make sense. If there was no depth, and it was simple as people claim, then it doesn't explain how one who is dedicated to the game will beat others who don't play as much. That shows that there is skill to the game. You have to learn how to jump, where to jump, when to jump, what attack to use and when to use it, what items to use and when to use them.

When I play my mates I would win every time with 20+ kills (we play 10 live stocks with 4 players), and my mates aren't casual noobs, we play regularly and they know what they're doing too. If it was just casual with no skill then I wouldn't win so consistently.

Alright, then tell me about this "depth". In Brawl you've got 2 attack buttons, and a shield.

In SF4 you've got 6 attack buttons, blocking, focus attacks, cancelling, super combos, ultra combos, EX moves, armor breaks, and I could go on forever.

Obsessively. I don't know enough about Farmville to describe what that looks like, but there are definitely people who are hardcore about Farmville. We all probably know at least one.

The funny thing is that the average hardcore Farmville player probably isn't a hardcore gamer at all. "Hardcore" just means you're really into something, really dedicated to it and all about it. So a hardcore gamer is really dedicated to video games in general. A hardcore SSBB player is really dedicated to SSBB. It should just be that simple, but gamers (and the industry in general) have started applying that term to individual games, which obviously doesn't make sense given its traditional definition. So now it has this new definition that nobody can really put into words which leads to endless debates like this thread.

I'm just gonna throw this Sakurai quote in here to see what everybody thinks:

Kirby's Dream Land was the first game I ever made, but I had no intention of making it a mainstream game. I really narrowed down the audience to beginners only. That's because, at the time, no matter how much fun the Super Mario Bros. games were, they were still too tough for normal people and kids. I could feel people drifting away from games, and it bothered me. In the midst of making Kirby, a lot of the team started wondering if we were maybe making it too simple. But I think it was necessary for us to consider people who hadn't played a game before, and I think doing that earned us fans that wouldn't have been around otherwise. That's the same creative approach I take with Smash Bros. It hasn't changed at all today.Sakurai

Every fighting game has combos, every fighting game has tiers, bair dair is just jumping in certain directions and attacking which is also very simple and also in every other fighting game, and ledge grabbing I guess its something but its still all very basic stuff. Trust me, I've put many hours into Brawl and I think its a great game but there really isn't much depth.

I've also been playing the Smash Bros. series for several years. Around seven years for Melee and Brawl since it came out at launch. I also own Street Fighter IV/Super Street Fighter IV and Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

I also disagree with you. Super Smash Bros. Brawl isas deep of a fighter as Street Fighter IV is. Brawl and SFIV both have a lot in common, actually. Both are easy to pick up and play but tough to master. At least, that's how I see it.
