[QUOTE="geoffmehoff"][QUOTE="radnasty"]Seriously? How old are you? If you think the combat system in A Link To The Past is lacking, Kid Icarus isn't going to blow your mind. I ask how old you are because if you weren't "around" to play SNES or NES games in the 80's and early 90's, you're probably wasting your time downloading anything on the VC. sk8ter33157exactly .The game ruled nothing else said about it People are so ignorant. It really, truly is sad. They formulated this stone-clad opinion in their mind and any notion of opposition to their ideas are immediatly insulted and discarded. No mater how good an argument against something is, nothing can sway these peoples thoughts.
The sad part is, you're doing the same thing.

I am completely open to ANYBODY's argument. Nobody has provided me with anything but "stop whining," "you suck" etc. If somone were to be civilized and offer me a proper version of their opinion then fine. I thought the point of a forum was to DISCUSS. If anything "sacred' is discussed...a flame-fest starts. The fact of the matter is that I can't see these flaws being tolerated even in the 80's when it was released. And to Viewtiful-Gamer: So I didint state that I liekd the graphics in my first post. Ok so then don't make assumptions that I judged based on the graphics. If you are to make judgements at least make sure you are right.Ugh. I downloaded The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past off the VC expecting it to be incredible. People praise it so greatly I was almost positive I would love it. Wrong. How can this stinker even hold a candle to Ocarina, Majora's, Wind Waker, or Twilight Princess? There are so many problems with this game:
1) The combat system: This is truly awful. Fighting enemies is so tedious and hard. When you get close enogh to slash an enemy they just charge you. This is made worse by the fact that Link moves like a snail while swinging his sword. And then once you get hit...you FREAKIN TURN INVISIBLE! WTF is up with that?! So you get hit and then you can't see where you are. This leads to the enemy just annihilating you. It's ridiculous
2) The horrible overworld: The map sucks. The world sucks. On the map it's impossible to see if your desired route is blocked by trees and this leads to wandering. Lots of wandering. The freakin trees create mazes that are extremely frustrating to navigate. There are so many other needless obstacles like rocks and poles.
3) It is so uncompelling: Why do I want to druge through this agony? To encounter even more frustrating gameplay and bad story/dialouge? The puzzles are easy; the real challenge is navigating the overworld. And the story is a complete bore. So Link gets a message in a dream and then suddenly rushes off to save the princess (that COULD have been just a dream), putting his own life in danger? And there is absolutely no backstory. You go save the princess and then WOOSH your a hero. You think people would be a little more secrective with revealing the location of the Pendants (or medallions or w/e) and the Master Sword.
A complete waste of money. I should have bought Kid Icarus or Kirby

It's been a long while since I played this game, but I'll try to reply intelligently. I think the biggest problem you have with it, though, is you're playing it for the first time in the year 2007...
1) Yes, the combat is more difficult than in 3D Zelda games. Most games back then were harder than games today. When the enemies charge at you, move out of the way and hit them from the side. Or try to shoot them from a distance. As for the turning invisible thing, I'm not 100% what you mean because it's been so long for me, but does Link flash? If so then that was a common thing back in the day. It means you are briefly invincible, so you have a chance to escape an enemy's attacks and not die. If it weren't for that, the combat would be even more difficult!
2) It's an adventure game, man. In the current Zeldas, the map doesn't tell you if the path is blocked by a boulder that you need bombs to blow up, or if a door is going to be locked, or whatever. You don't find out until you get there. This isn't unique to ALttP, it's in every Zelda game. As for the "maze of trees" issue, well, that's how the 2D Zeldas worked. The only reason this has disappeared is because they can't block you path with trees in 3D, since you could just... walk between them. You may get annoyed with the trees, but again, that's just how Zelda games were back then. I, for one, like it. Zelda games are all about exploration. I don't want my map to tell me everything. Go there, discover it for yourself, and you'll gradually find yourself memorizing the lay of the land.
3) Decent stories are a relatively new feature for videogames, honestly. If you think ALttP's story is bad, go play the original Zelda for NES. I think you'd drop dead. But seriously, again, this isn't so much a flaw as a sign of the times. The puzzles, I thought, were pretty good. Some of them. But they obviously can't compare to the complexity of puzzles in three dimensions.
Basically, everything you're complaining about is due to times changing, and expectations rising. You want intuitive, forgiving combat. You want a clear, unobstructed view of where you're going. You want an enthralling story. You want complex puzzles. Essentially, you want a modern game. Well, you aren't going to find any modern games on the Virtual Console. Either appreciate it for what it is (the best Zelda game for its time), or you will be disappointed. That's the best I can explain it.
God, why do you people just make fun of him and say he's not a real gamer and that he sucks? Everyone has a valid opinion, and you shouldn't say they're a horrible person because they don't like a game.
I think A Link To The Past is very overrated, but it's still a good game. I have the Game Boy Advance version, and I really like it. The only problem is that it saves my game about half the time. Does this happen in the Virtual Console version, because that could make or break me buying it. Someone answer that question too.

Wow thanks. An intelligent post. I see your point.  I would have suggested that this was simply a trolling issue, however on further inspection buddy gave Marvel Nemisis: Rise of the Imperfects for PSP a perfect 10 review. So lets get this straight, MN:RotI for PSP= 10.0/ ZaLttP = 4.9 or lower as 5.0 is an average game. Hmmm. Are your mittens attached to your sleeves? Perhaps you might have more fun with a good game like Superman64, maybe the green fog and hovering rings might not own you as hard as the 16bit, 4 direction walking enemies of yore.bubnuxI didn't rate that. I logged onto Gamespot at a friends house and didnt sign out. He f'ed around and rated Marvel a 10.0

That's your typical top down fight sequence, not much has changed when it comes to that. But if you're trying to compare this to a 3d Zelda, it's not going to happen.
They spent a lot of time on Ocarina, based on what ALTTP set up.
Backstory? 1.)at that time, they didn't have back stories. Check whatever game you want, not much story too it. The story evolved through dialogue and pretty much the gameplay.
2.)Enemies? Really? The game isn't that hard, I mean you're going to die, but by all means the game isn't difficult.Â
3.)The map is actually pretty good for the time, you can zoom in and look around, one of the best maps of the time. I mean it was nothing crazy, but an option of a map was wow.
4.) Graphics at the time were top knotch, and still look good for a top down kind of game.
Look, ALTTP isn't one of my favorite Zelda's, but then again Majora's Mask is hated by lots, and I love that. But the fact is don't get your back up. Your argument by all means isn't the greatest, it sounds like your frustrated because you're not used to old school days of gaming. Games were a lot harder then than they are now. Your complaints are what anyone can say about any game. I don't need to defend the game, but I am going to tear apart your argument. I understand where you're coming from, but at the same time, I think all your points is simply because you expected too much from an old game in this day and age.

[QUOTE="TacoJelly"]When I played OOT (back in 98) I was really dissapointed... Why? BECAUSE I PLAYED THIS MASTERPIECE FIRST!Guys, keep rolling with the insults and ill keep the moderation notices coming if you tell people you are reporting them its going to get you suspended... its happened to me when I told a spammer I reported them.
Seriously, if you can pull your head out of your @ss and consider the limitations they had to work with back in... what was it? 1993? You can trully appreciate what a marvelous work Nintendo did. OOT copied the linear yet not linear design and they have not swayed from it since (except for Majoras Mask, which I loved though not my favorite). The score is fantastic and forbidden>sk8ter33157

People don't seem to get that I dont have a problem with the difficulty. I dont die all the time...i just lose alot of hearts from the obnoxious enemies. And I DONT NEED A WALKTHROUGH. I EVEN SAID THE PUZZLES AND DUNGEONS ARE TOO EASY.That's your typical top down fight sequence, not much has changed when it comes to that. But if you're trying to compare this to a 3d Zelda, it's not going to happen.

I'm not going to quote your post cause its ginormous but I may have to give the KH series a try... its for gamecube correct?XBSHXNope. PS2. I realize that might present some problems for some (fanboys,) but it is really worth a try. It isn't kiddy at all. Kingdom Hearts 1 deals with longing to explore and live free, inner-darkness, corruption, greed, and lust. Kingdom Hearts 2 focuses mroe on wanting to feel "whole." Kingdom hearts 2 got a 10 in EGM and is better than KH1...but you should play the first one first for story reasons.
