you're talking about the cornerstone of the entire Zelda franchise. Almost every aspect that makes these games fun was truely perfected in LTTP. If you have a problem with the game play.....MAYBE JUST MAYBE IT'S YOU. Thousands upon thousands of other gamers love this little gem....myself included.

I recommend just really giving it a solid playthrough. I suspect once you get used to the 2-Dish controls you may think differently.

Ugh. I downloaded The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past off the VC expecting it to be incredible. People praise it so greatly I was almost positive I would love it. Wrong. How can this stinker even hold a candle to Ocarina, Majora's, Wind Waker, or Twilight Princess? There are so many problems with this game:

1) The combat system: This is truly awful. Fighting enemies is so tedious and hard. When you get close enogh to slash an enemy they just charge you. This is made worse by the fact that Link moves like a snail while swinging his sword. And then once you get hit...you FREAKIN TURN INVISIBLE! WTF is up with that?! So you get hit and then you can't see where you are. This leads to the enemy just annihilating you. It's ridiculous

2) The horrible overworld: The map sucks. The world sucks. On the map it's impossible to see if your desired route is blocked by trees and this leads to wandering. Lots of wandering. The freakin trees create mazes that are extremely frustrating to navigate. There are so many other needless obstacles like rocks and poles.

3) It is so uncompelling: Why do I want to druge through this agony? To encounter even more frustrating gameplay and bad story/dialouge? The puzzles are easy; the real challenge is navigating the overworld. And the story is a complete bore. So Link gets a message in a dream and then suddenly rushes off to save the princess (that COULD have been just a dream), putting his own life in danger? And there is absolutely no backstory. You go save the princess and then WOOSH your a hero. You think people would be a little more secrective with revealing the location of the Pendants (or medallions or w/e) and the Master Sword.

A complete waste of money. I should have bought Kid Icarus or Kirby

Yeah...it's very rewarding.

Its amazing, even if it is over a decade old. The story is still more original than most of the stuff that is recycled every year.

My point is that Halo 2 is one of the most overrated games of all time. it is far from being one of the greatest games of all time. there are so many better fpss that halo 2 its not even funny. it just scored critical success for being one of the only good games for the xbox. true it is a very good game but not one of the best of all time.

Seriously? How old are you? If you think the combat system in A Link To The Past is lacking, Kid Icarus isn't going to blow your mind. I ask how old you are because if you weren't "around" to play SNES or NES games in the 80's and early 90's, you're probably wasting your time downloading anything on the VC. radnasty

As others have suggested, the game feels terrible to you because you are spoiled by standards of modern Zelda games...

Also, the best advice I can give you is that you need to play, if nothing else, The Legend of Zelda (NES), whether it be through means of virtual console, GBA, GCN or NES (I am talking about the original and first title in the series).

Trust and believe, after having couple of hours with it, if nothing else, you will apperiate The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past little more for steps into evolution into took almost every sense of the idea from its original origins.....

Edit: If all of that fails, I do not why else to say......as the old saying goes, "you cannnot win them all."

I never particularly liked A Link To The Past but I wouldn't call it a terrible game. I think your opinion on it mostly depends on when you first played it. It's almost a generational thing - for people who got into Zelda before Ocarina of Time came out it's usually their favourite and they still swear by it being the best Zelda game period. People who started with the 64 Zeldas are more likely to find this game 'terrible'.

But yeah, it hasn't aged well.

A link to the past was an amazing game, when it originaly came out I avoided it due to the screen shots on the box, it looked dated even then. But during a spell where I had nothing else to play I gave it a go and must say it was one of the most addictve games I have played, I even skived work to play it.

But that was then and this is now.... It would suck now I agree.. VC sucks, no need for retro gaming... as a child I loved frogger, pac man, space invaders but now they all suck... all the games on VC are available free via certain emulators (illegaly I may add) but even when you dont pay for them they still suck... or should I say would imagine they suck... :)

Notice how I made no mention of 'Dated Graphics." Actually I really like the style and look of the game. And about the combat system: I am not expecting a huge, deep combat system. But at least give me something adequate. Enemies can pwn you so easily. And the turning invisible thing is a huge flaw. And I do appreciate many games form the VC, even though I was born in the 90's. You were born in the 90's..... you have no oppinion, of all of the Zelda games this one holds up best today, OOT is so broken it hurts to play now, MM is even worse, after playing TP WW isn't fun anymore, ALTTP has the best holding value because you can always go back to it as a solid game for something like Gameboy Advance, you'll find nothing you like on the VC, so just give up.

I wouldn't bash ALttP, but I would bash the original Zelda. It doesn't hold up at all today. I agree with the original poster that the 2D Mario games have aged MUCH better than the 2D Zelda games.
