So here I am, 18 years old, and still don't have my driver's license. When I was 14 I was absolutely stoked to be driving in a year and a half. When I was 15 and got my driver's permit I started practicing right away. But then I realized I had a problem. When driving I become anxious, and can't focus on the road as well I should be. When I was 17 I took driver's ed through my school (cost $450) so I could learn properly and not be so nervous. I got by with a B, and didn't even take my finals driver's test (I felt sick, so I skipped it, and my instructor said I was a good enough driver that he just gave me a B on it). But at this point I didn't own a car. My aunt is about to sell me her 96 Chevy Blazer for $2,000. It's in good condition and has a black leather interior so I'm excited for it. But I haven't driven in a year and I'm nervous to get back on the road.

Does anyone else have this problem? I guess why I'm nervous is because I like to space out, and I'm afraid of making a mistake on the road which will cost me money, or cause someone else harm.

I sort of feel the same way right now, but I just started driving. I'm sure if I practise enough though I'll feel more comfortable driving.

Just take it easy, and you'll have no problem. Most of the time people are the cause of their own mistakes because they're purposefully doing something stupid.

Driving made me very nervous at first too...like, ridiculously so. I guess getting into an accident my first time driving certainly did not help those feelings. Even now I feel pretty nervous while driving. I can never completely relax. I think you just need to relax, make yourself focus, and drive a lot. Once you do it more often, it'll become easier.

i waited till i was 18 and it was honestly the best decision of my life because i got to see my friends get it at the 16 1/2 and how they were out of control and immature about driving. When your 18 you feel a lot more responsible than you do when your 16. Honestly once you start it will be like 2nd nature and as someone stated above it is relaxing.

I got mine when I was 18, I should have gotten it earlier. When I first started driving I was nervous, but after I got comfortable (like a few weeks after I got my license) it wasn't a big deal.

Depends on the area in Spokane where I grew up I'm fine, but here in Seattle driving makes me nervous because its so crowded and different from what I'm used to. I love driving in general though especially at night its really relaxing.

No. Driving is mind-numbingly easy.

The only thing to be scared of is other drivers. They're insane.

Then again, I don't have your problem TC. I always stay focused when I'm driving.

I think everyone, when they first ever start driving, feel nervous at first. But don't let those feelings intimidate you. The more you drive, the more natural you will feel towards it. I remember when I first started driving, I was slightly nervous as well, but I never gave up on it. Today, I drive without even thinking of it. The activity just comes off natural now and there isn't anything to worry about. You will feel the same too the more you drive.

ok ok, i own a 2002. just be careful with them they dont sit on a wide stance so they lean quite a bit, theyre sensitive, and theyre terrible in the rain with stock tires.

if you get it get a lowering kit it makes it a lot more stable for weaving in and out of lanes

Thank you for the advice. Since you seem to know a bit about cars, do you think I'm getting a good deal? White Chevy Blazer '96, has no major problems, 120k mileage, has AC, Stereo, and CD Player, black leather interior, for $2000. Only downside I can think of besides it being used with 120k miles is that my aunt is a smoker so the interior is stained with a smoke smell. My aunt says I can even make an offer if I feel the price is unfair. What do you think I should do?

i would pass you will never get that smell out and its about the price of the truck to redo everything and if you try to trade it in youll be royally screwed on the resale. the most known issue with the 96 is the crappy transmission on the 4wd. how does it look from the outside does is it loud when it runs? se if you can talk her down to 1500$

Practice makes perfect. If you want to drive just get the car and do it, you may be nervous at first, but after a while you will probably be able to relax.

The feeling will most definitely go away - you'll soon find that the fear of you doing something wrong will be replaced with paranoia about all the other drivers on the road doing something stupid. :P But in truth, all it takes is some time at the wheel - then it'll be second nature.

I didn't get it until 20, i just made sure to get a car with a good safety rating. If you want go for a truck or SUV that's made a bit tougher so you won't be so scared.

I'm not scared of driving, more irritated and bored by it.

Edit:Though, I am scared of the interstate because we live in N.Kentucky. As in there are allot of Ohio drivers (more like kamikazes on wheels).

Having an Ohio driver fly by you going 100+ miles mph partly in your lane is ******** annoying.

I turned 16 in February and I'm still a little nervous, but not as much as before. I spaced out when I 1st started driving but then I learned how to drive stick and it's a lot easier to focus because you really don't have much of a choice.

Yea, I can relate.. I'm actually terrible at decision making in roads.. I rather drive a tank to be honest. I'm going on 22, I've had my license since 18 and I've never driven outside of learning and the exam.

Nah. I had to slam on the brakes and swerve into other lanes three times in the past two days, and I'm still as cool as a cucumber. 8) It would be nice if the people in my area could drive though..

Nah driving is alright. The only time I get nervous is when I have to sit in the passenger seat while my brother drives like hes in NASCAR :P. I know he has more experience and all, but I get nervous.

I have never had an interest in driving, and have not driven by myself once, despite being a year past the image limit, but I can agree to an extent. Whenever I am in a car I sometimes feel anxious about the driver crashing; I've seen many images of the results of car crashes and I do not want to end up like that. ;___;

18 here been driving consistently since i was 16 and daily since 17. nervous at first man cant lie but damn, its like second nature to me now, chronic speeder here, 120-140 on highways all the time and slow drivers (people who actually go the limit) really get on my nerves. its not biggie after you drive for a bit but you will be nervous the first time for sure.

Im 16 and getting my permit soon, i couldnt get it because i had to get my birth certif. even when im not the one driving i still do all the things as if i were driving, looking both ways turning, shifting lanes i always look behind me, try this out i think it will help, and noticing the mistakes other people make, not using signals etc, i do this mainly because im sketched out from my parents driving, (tbh i KNOW i could drive better then my mom) she swerves a little bit, and whenever shes talking she always looks at me, ive had to tell her countless times to focus on the damn road, lol women drivers no survivors.

Spacing out isn't all that bad while driving. That's what I'm doing if I'm not focusing on my music. Might sound bad but it's really not... Then again driving is second nature for me. :| Talking on the phone... Different story... Especially when my vehicle has bad alignment.

▲ I'll be getting my license soon too. I take the test august 30th. I'm still learning and practising a lot with my parents. The thing I hate the most are the other drivers riding my butt all the time. Apparently they have a problem with other drivers going the speed limit. ▲
