Despite some of the controversies, and the partisan lean of the network and criticism by many, including President Obama himself, 2009 was the best year ever for the Fox News Network. Fox handily defeated CNN and MSNBC in the ratings, and is 3rd in popularity among all cable channels. On top of this, a recent Gallup Poll placed Glenn Beck in fourth place in a ranking of men most revered by Americans, just behind Nelson Mandela.

Thoughts?

Well, that list isn't as bad as I thought. The biggest problem I have with it doesn't have to do with Beck, it's the fact that W. is more revered than Mandela. That's a pretty bad list all around though.

Since it's only among Americans though, I can see why our politicians would rank above foreign figures.

It is kind of like Fox's pointing to their ratings as some sort of dilapidation of their political point of view.... that seems to have no connection to actual politics.

FOX News is popular because it is entertaining and conservitive.

Hell, I watch FOX News simply because I like to hear all the crazy stuff they say. I get laughs out of it.

Fox News is not, however, popular because of its credibility or new reporting, which is kind of ironic

I was a little surprised at Obama getting 30% of that vote.

Otherwise, why is Glenn Beck even in that list? :? Come'on, even Bush did something worth noticing, but Glenn Beck, really?

Because a news channel where the agenda is dictated by radical right wingers is so much better.

Uh, if it balances out the leftist extremism on all the other networks, yes it is. The media are supposed to be the watchdogs. They're supposed to test our politicians and public figures, and force them to defend their initiatives and exercise a little honesty. Since Obama took office, Fox News is the only channel that has done that. ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN have bowed over to the Obama administration and failed to fairly evaluate or look critically at any of the Democratic policy initiatives. The fact that Fox News presents the opposing point of view is a positive thing, even if you don't agree with it very often. A one-sided media in any nation just paves the way for tyranny of the majority and/or dictatorship.

Yeah, that's why the internet is much better when it comes to ad-free reporting. Sure, you'll have to wade through a lot of useless chatter but at least its not a hopeless search like it is with TV or newspapers.

Fox News has been doing what it always has done, appeal to a certain crowed to secure ratings, money, and popularity -- this is not indicitive of a working, honest press, and it's a shame people even watch Fox News or MSNBC or CNN or any of them. None of them ask the unpopular questions, and all the questions they do ask fit within a certain spectrum of acceptable questions and acceptable answers. These news corporations portray only two sides to an issue, regardless of the subject, and irrespective of the reality that there are always almost more than two sides to an issue.

Yes because you'll find radical leftists owning news companies.

General Electric owns NBC. Disney owns ABC. Westinghouse Electric owns CBS. Time Warner owns CNN. All four of those corporations are controlled by the left. That's pretty common knowledge in the private sector. I'm not sure why it's so hard to understand that the left likes corporations too, as long as they push a leftist agenda.

I said no such thing.

My point being their ratings do not indicate what Fox itself presents, as some sort of justification or actual political movement. Their ratings have been strong when the right has been strong, and strong when the right was on the way out of office in epic numbers.

They're just a tool to set advert pricing.

Fox is doing the same thing every other news station is doing; telling people what they should think and how they should feel about what's going on in the world. The only difference is they answer to a different group of rich *** holes.

Does the network as a whole appeal to leftist politics or do certain MSNBC personalities appeal to leftist politics? Yes, Olbermann and Maddow are liberals (they are really the only two liberals who have their own shows on cable news), but I wouldn't say that the news division is promoting a liberal agenda, and let's not forget that Joe Scarborough has a 3 hour show every weekday morning.

MSNBC is obviously liberal/left wing, but theyre not radical.

I can understand why some might feel Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann come off as radicals, but that is about as far as it goes.

Hell, even Rachel pisses me off sometimes...she is like the liberal counter to Anne Coulter.

But, to sum up, you do not see the anchors on MSNBC publishing books about how conservatives are the devil, ruining America, and should be locked up, nor do you see them bashing gays, minorities (specifically Hispanics), etc.

You see all of that on FOX News though and their anchors do that.

In short, if anyone is radical, its the neoconservatives at FOX...I really wish they would go back to old conservatism.

I don't know that MSNBC is radical by any measure, but they certainly appeal to leftist politics.

Just out of curiosity, what does Maddow do in your opinion that warrants a comparison to Anne Coulter?

I hate Glenn Beck because his views are different than mine, and anyone with a different view or thought needs to be despised and hated. That's the only way we'll achieve bi-partisanship and learn to live together as a community, when we hate those that are different than us. Oh, and if we don't pass a stimulous bill immediately our economy will sink into depression and everyone will be out of work and starving to death. Not to mention that if we don't immediately reform healthcare and have a government take over the health system will collapse and everyone will die from H1N1. But yeah, Glenn is a fear monger and I hate him for that.

I don't know that MSNBC is radical by any measure, but they certainly appeal to leftist politics.

Their news reporting is no different than any other news station that I've watched, including Fox, but the majority of the channel is filled with commentators who appeal to the left, including Morning Joe. I watched a segment recently when they had Hitchens on to discuss Obama's winning the Nobel Peace Prize, and all of them, excluding Chris, were defending Obama's winning the prize, saying that he deserved it because he represented change.

Also, Chris Matthews is pretty liberal, along with some of the others who fill in for Matthews and Scarborough when they are absent.
