Interesting. I'm not Muslim, but one thing I personally find annoying is that a lot of people don't seem to know that not all Muslims are non-white. Too many people don't get that Islam is a religion, not a race.

Thats fantastic. My brother converted to being Muslim, though Im agnostic myself. I think its great that people open their eyes a little bit, people are stereotyping being Muslim and their lifestyle by what they see on the news. Its sad indeed.

I hate when people think Muslims=Arab, and that they talk like Muslim is a Language, when its not at all.

It really shows how ignorant people are of a very famous religion

Islam Rules.

I actually did know all that...well, except the "only 20% are arab" part. I know a lot of South Pacific places are muslim, and there are plenty of muslims in the US and Canada I'd wager.

Either way, its refreshing to read that stuff again. Despite how it is being misused and portrayed, Islam really is the religion of peace.

So according to this "articles" reasoning because women are not required to wear a burqua Islam doesn't hate women?

And because Islam had rules protecting innocents (which are superseded by the koran telling muslims to kill "infidels") they are a peaceful religion.

I could go on but I'll just say this article is a bs.

I didn't really know about the first one too much, but everything else I kind of assumed was true already. Besides, Saladin was actually a pretty cool guy, and his line in "Kingdom of Heaven" gets me every time. It's the scene where
Orlando Bloom's character tells Saladin that Christians murdered everyone within the city streets, and Saladin swore he wouldn't, claiming "I am not those men." Awesome. :D
I'm Christian btw, but I have deepfound respect for Islam. After all, we're both 'religions of the book.'

A lot of that article is silly. 1. Muslim contributions to science and math have been exagerrated, seeing as they conquered places with a vast collection of knowledge, then adapted the knowledge themselves. The article also fails to mention how Islamic society fell after embracing the idea that all knowledge came from the Quran. The poll about Muslims and evolution is a US poll, which isn't so surprising since American Muslims tend to be educated. A poll in a Muslims country would be a better gauge of things. Thirdly, I don't think anyone (who isn't an idiot) claims that the West and Christianity has always been better and more humane than the Muslim world, just that it's better and more humane now.

muslims actually burned most of the knowledge they got from conquering places coz the knowledge was far more than what they could understand so if anything islam had a major negative affect on science.

Didn't Muslims preserve much knowledge that it led to Renaissance in Europe, which was a rediscovery of Greek and Roman culture?

Muslims preserved the Antique classic philosophies and sciences when Christian Europe was burning a lot of things before Constantine, labeling them as pagan thoughts.

Ideally the religion is peaceful. But it is not in today's world. There isn't anything about suicide bombings in the Quaran but they still use it to gain followers for such acts.

5) True the mandate of the burqa is something that is not directly stated in the quran. however, the quran is extremely misogynistic with verses like these

http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/quran/women/long.html

4) I have yet to hear any secular critics that cite the founding fathers when discussing the topic of islam. straw man much? or do you just get all your examples of criticism from tea-partiers?

3) once again, this is a straw man. only rednecks and 12 year old trolls make this equation

2) not even Pat Condell (who I do actually admire, despite his extreme nature) has made such a statement. No one has said that in the past, western culture has proven to be more humane than Islamic culture. Those were barbaric times for pretty much every culture. The point that people make is that Islamic countries today are far more violent and suppressive than western (and most oriental) cultures today. Good job, once again, attacking an argument that doesnt exist. so far we have 3 straw men and one half truth.

And this section is especially absurd considering that Muhammad killed countless non-combatants and conquered the entire Arabic peninsula during his own life-time. The key word there is Conquered. one does not conquer in defense. There is plenty of evidence to show that Muhammad and his men killed many, many noncombatants.

And whether or not the people he killed were combatants is irrelevant here. the combatants who he killed were simply defending their homeland, family, and property from plundering, rapacious invaders. these were brothers, fathers, uncles, sons, who were simply defending their home from outside invaders. The mass pillaging, raping, and murdering that Muhammadcommitted was not acceptable simply because he mostly killed people who fought back (in defense I might add). The fact that this article brushesaside the horrific violence that the very founder of Islam committed, shows a stunning amount of intellectual dishonesty.

1) for a time, the Islamic world was the capital of scientific advancement. that was until Muslim "scholars" such as Hamid Ghazahli came along (around 1000-1100) and flung the islamic world into a scientific dark age from where it has yet to emerge. the scientific contributions from the Islamic world since the eleventh century have been abysmal.

Again, this is a sort of straw man. not many people claim that the middle east has never produced a single contribution to science. The point people make is that these theocratic hell holes produce next to nothing today (and that this pattern has been consistent for the past 8 centuries).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnEeTBuPQuo

Regardless, one must ask themself "should islam be credited with the scientific discoveries of the time?" well, should the accomplishments of every scientific endeavour of the western world be attributed to Christianity? I think that would be an unreasonable assumption. especially how both books are rife with scientific inaccuracy

http://www.faithfreedom.org/Articles/SKM/contradictions.htm

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Scientific_errors_in_the_bible

---------------------------

this article is disingenuous, apologetic nonsense and it has more straw men than Iowa.

Apparently he didn't read the word probability, and must insist that he must promote atheism by bashing other religions. Really though....
