Considering that USA has it's hands in so many countries and tries to tell people how to live and how to govern, it shouldn't come as a surprise that we have bred so much hatred from the people of other countries.

We try to exert too much control in too many countries that don't want us there, where we also end up waging wars (with dubious reasons) that get innocent people killed.

I'm not saying the 9/11 attacks were justified, I'm saying America should wake up to the reality that not everyone wants us controlling them.

Imperalism at this day in age is ftl...

I agree with TC. We need to stop spreading our "goodness" to other countries overseas.

Yeah the US does some questionable things. Imagine if all the effort and money spent on overseas war were used to make things better back home. Hell, if instead of spending the money in Iraq fighting a war and trying to secure an oil supply we used the money on research, we probably could've found alternative sources of energy.

there are plenty of countries that have people suffering that the United States offers no support to. what's the difference with these countries you're referring to that we do offer support?

You can say the government and policy makers had it coming, but I dont think you can ever state that innocent civilians "had it coming". Almost all of the people killed that day were people that were just trying to live their lives. Many of them probably disagreed with a lot of US foreign policy. Many of them were foreign born or foreigners who just happened to be working there that day.

No way, 9/11 happened because they hate our freedom and want to impose sharia law on us.

That sounds much more plausible then blaming it on imperialistic meddling in Middle Eastern/Islamic affairs.

did we have a retaliatory strike against us coming? Maybe...

but 9/11? Stop trying to justify it, that was a barbaric attack targeted at civilians to cause panic, terror, and worse.

This. To say Americans had it coming is not correct.....the citizens of the country had nothing to do with the government decisions. Not to mention those that were not even American.

Perhaps, doesn't justify it though. Many countries may dislike that the US tend to stick their fingers into matters that aren't really their business or do so without it being accepted beforehand, it doesn't give anyone the right to attack that country's civilans though.

I of course don't condone the death of innocents, but 9/11 is a drop in the ocean compared to what the US gets up to abroad.

Where does one start? The 800,000+ civilians killed in Iraq? The 1.5 million injured? Maybe the deformed babies from the use of depleted uranium rounds?

To say that America's response was disproportionate is a considerable understatement. And all this is going to breed whole new generations of people who would love for a chance to inflict a 9/11 style event on America and their allies.

Do you ever consider the amount of innocent civilians who were killed in the 1940s? How many? I would say about 20 million. 911 is a piece of cake compared.

Yeah. America had the same reaction on 9/11 as they did in 41. I don't understand why you brought it up, though.

It isn't the year 1800... This is a global world... Problems anywhere in the world are US problems... To think our nation as it is can function by withdrawing from all oversea interests and become isolationist, ignoring the rest of the world... Is completely and utterly ignorant...

Likewise US problems are world problems... There is no "US economy" or "Chinese economy" anymore... There is a world economy... Look at the economic issues around the ENTIRE WORLD... Caused primarily by sub-prime mortgage lending to poor people in the United States and the banking collapse caused by it...

This is the 21st century... You can yell about how it is none of our business what happens in the Middle East all you want, but it is ridiculous... It is 2011, not 670... Whether your religious text says it or not in today's world it is unnacceptable to marry three nine year old girls... It is unnacceptable to ban women from driving or having an education... To think that is acceptable and none of our concern is entirely ignorant.

------

OP, I bet you are one of those people who complains when the US doesn't intervene in Darfur... Despite raving that we shouldn't involve ourselves in foreign affairs...

When did I mention wars at all? How do the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have anything to do with what I said in the slightest bit? And what are you talking about when you mention trading... I SAID that we ARE trading and that our economies are so intertwined at this point that WE CAN'T back out of it and whether we want to or not, OUR INFLUENCE IS THERE AND IT ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE...

The point is we get hated if we do act and hated if we don't. We are going to be hated no matter what we do, we can defend them, sanction them, trade with them...all leads to the same hate. We have to act, just with common sense.

If their real beef is with meddling, I have to wonder why they didn't direct more of their anger toward the British, French, or Italians who, unlike the US, were legit imperial powers and actually had colonies and spheres of influence in the Islamic world. Or toward the Turks, who ruled over most of the region for like 400 years.

The US is at a no win situation when it comes to foreign affairs. If we help, we'll be bashed for sticking our nose in other people's buisness, and if we don't help and something bad happens the world will be like "Why didn't America help?"

Oh make no mistake, the US has over history probably the largest amount of "frags", Afterall the US has essentially been in nearly every war and armed conflict since it got it's independence. And while it is a shame, you're mostly likely right that the next generations will be just as resentful towards the US, if not more as a result.

Telling somebody how to live is enough cause to kill thousands of civilians around the world?

These cowards target civilians. Why would anybody defend a person like that?

This is the crux.

I'm not saying we were right to stick our nose where it didn't belong, but people complain that we don't do enough for oppressed regimes as is. What would they say if we stopped completely, removed all of our bases, except in places wherethe country wants us? They would say we aren't doing enough, they would call us barbaricfor not intervening. It doesn't seem like we can win with anything we do.

We don't usually run the countries.....we leave them to their own leaders once the country is stable. Unlike how other countries do it....
