I asked him if he was pretty religious and he said yeah. Thats pretty weird, because God is against homosexuality...

1 Corinthians Chapter 6 verse 9: What! Do you not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God's Kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men...

I just wanted to clear this up too, because Ive been hearing a lot of people say that God has nothing against homosexuality.

Do you guys think I should show my co worker this scripture tomorrow or what??

Anamosa41

WHERE does it say any of these thing besides the last one! And the last one was for Jews! You guys are so... uninformed!

Oh?
Kill your family if they worship another god(Deuteronomy 13:6-10)
People who are uncircumsized are to be cast out from the community and are sinners(Gen 17:14)
Pork is a sin to eat(DE 14: 8 )
Women were created as creatures for mans amusement(Gen 3:16)

1.I follow the NT, and I don't take everything in the OT literally....

2. Yeah? So? God said it was a sin to be uncircumsized, that seems normal to me...

3. For JEWS! JEWS!

4. WTH! How do you get that from it saying a woman will have pain in childbirth and to be sumbmissive to their husbands!

Am I argueing with your religion? Nope. Didn't think so. I'm talking about the man in question's religion and it's not been specified. As for number 4,in the context it could easily be assumed that man is better than woman, therefore they are our possessions.

how does the context demonstrate women to be possessions of men?

Oh noes! No seriously, who cares? He can read the bible, it seems fundies like to preach that God hates gays, Bis, and lezzes(If that comes off as mean for someone, it's not, just a cute name), when it seems he really doesn't(In the event that he's real I mean).

Do you enjoy judging other people? I have no problem with people following their own codes in their own lives, but I have a problem when you judge others based on your own contrived beliefs. Do you honestly believe that everyone who doesn't follow a ridiculously rigid set of rules in a 2500 year old book is going to suffer eternally?

As I drive to class everyday I always drive passed a church and this church has a billboard thing near the parking lot entrance. For the past 2 weeks it has said "If you love Jesus come on in."

As far as I know this Jesus person was a guy so if I were to love him would'nt that make me gay And any guys who go to that church love him to wouldnt that make them gay So obviously christianity is not against homosexuality.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Reread what you quoted and noticed that basically anyone having premarital sex is in the same boat.;)Jaks_Secret

And as everyone knows, abstinence is wrong.

But anyways, you can't tell that God is against homosexuality. Three of many reasons why; (1) The Bible wasn't written by God, so we can't tell (2) There's a chance Jesus could have been homosexual, and God wouldn't hate his own son if he has the capacity to love everyone (3) God must be fine with homosexualitry because if he created everything, then he made humans be able to love each other. So it can't be that wrong.

Shazam. Religion fails again.

1. He told us to multiply in Genesis. We just have to be married.

2. Everyone will sin.

3. No. We all are born into sin but, for example, if a baby dies that baby will surely go to heaven since it hasn't sinned yet. Being born into sin and sinning are different things.

I'm not sure where you get that from,as woman is specificly referenced as being ruled. Not having rules laid down. Either way it's clear that women are considered lesser to men, accorcding to the bible. A point reitterated in Timothy 2:12

"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."

you have to look at the historical and cultural context of when the book was written to see what the author was trying to communicate, and if this applies to me and if so, how.

[QUOTE="Wetall_basic"]*Sigh* The bible also says you should kill your family if they follow a different religion. It also say that women were created to be amusement for men and that it's a sin to eat pork. I can't really take much of what the bible say seriously.Wetall_basic

The NKJV's rendering of the latter half of Genesis 3:16 is typical of many translations: "Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." From this we can see that the two clauses cannot be parallels. Instead, they form a statement of action and reaction. Because the woman "desires" her husband, he will "rule over" her.

Yet this does not make much sense as a curse. Why should a woman's desire for her husband cause him to dominate her? Most men would gladly accept his wife's desires for him, causing him to treat her more gently rather than roughly, as is implied in this verse. How are we to understand this?

The key is in the word "desire," translated from the Hebrew tesuqah, which the Brown, Driver and Briggs lexicon calls "unusual and striking" (p. 1003). It occurs only three times in the Old Testament: here, Genesis 4:7, and Song 7:10. It can carry the sense of sexual longing (as in the Song of Songs), but its usage in Genesis 4:7 shows another side, that of a desire to overcome or defeat another: "[Sin's] desire is for you, but you should rule over it." This latter meaning fits Genesis 3:16 better than the former.

Thus, God is saying that a woman's desire will be to gain the upper hand over her husband, but because she is the weaker vessel, her husband will put her down by force, if need be. The curse is that, in the main, women will lose the battle of the sexes. History bears this out. Until the advent of women's rights movements, women were virtually their husband's property, treated as heir-producing machines, given little freedom, and forced to serve their husband's every whim. In many cultures, men bought and sold women like cattle. Some cultures maintain this custom even today.

Only where true Christianity flourishes is there any real easing of this curse. Ephesians 5:22-33 teaches how we can decrease its effects within our marriages—by emulating the virtues of Christ's relationship with the church. Thus, wives are told to submit rather than contend, and husbands are commanded to love rather than dominate. It takes conscious effort to overcome the evil, ingrained habits of 6,000 years of misguided practice.

Not really. You see, if he chose not to marry he wouldn't be sinning.

Do not say that I judge people! I don't. God Almighty will. I do help people understand God and His laws better though. To answer your last question, I believe it with all my heart, soul, and mind.

What? That is the same thing but in different words... That is just downright sexist.

How old do you figure the Jewish faith is? Culture was very different back then...actually, sexism still exists today.;)

Of course it does. I just had a problem with that post because notconspiracy made it sound like he was defending the idea...

Oh noes! No seriously, who cares? He can read the bible, it seems fundies like to preach that God hates gays, Bis, and lezzes(If that comes off as mean for someone, it's not, just a cute name), when it seems he really doesn't(In the event that he's real I mean).
wemhim

How do you know God doesn't hate homosexuals?

Also some people in this thread are conflating religion and culture. Religion =/= culture. Religion is applicable for all of time, regardless of what the majority of the time may think. So if God said homosexuality is wrong, as a divine message it is applicable to all of time. That is how God wanted mankind to live and abide by. Mankind has no right to overrule this. Remember the people of Lot, the culture at that place and time was one of perversion, God's law was still applicable and right.

But that depends on whether you believe in the first place.

how does the context demonstrate women to be possessions of men?notconspiracy

"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee."

I can't see how that possibly could be misconstrued that way...

he rules over the household, as in makes the rules for the woman and family to follow. the woman isn't a posession of his

How does the latter passage relate to modern times? And 'if this applies to me'? Is it really ok to just pick some parts of the bible and claim them law and turn away others as 'outdated'?

This is getting completely off the ogrinal topic though.

you were affirming that since the epistle to Timothy says that women should not teach or talk in churches, then the bible is sexist, and therefore my god is sexist. I am negating this resolution by pointing out the reality that you must understand the historical and cultural context of the verse.
