Seriously, I'm getting pretty sick of getting point loss and ban moderations due to this "Offensive Posting". I'm mean just about ANYTHING you say these days is offensive in one way or another to someone else, especially if you happen to prove said person wrong.

No matter how clean I try to keep my posts, I get a daily message telling me I offended someone. I'm about 90% sure I posted once yesterday and got a message for point loss. It was probably one of my cleanest messages ever.

"Offensive" is too open for debate. They need to be more specific. Racist, censor bypassing, etc. Because offensive could simply be me saying just about ANYTHING that I hold as my own opinion.

Either this or the post in question NEEDS to be shown to the person being moderated. I would LOVE to know what exactly I say that offend people here. But I'm 100% sure that most people just send a moderation request and either the mods just do it because they're too lazy to read through every single report. Or the mods don't even have to do anything and it's just built into the forums, whenever soemone hits the "file a report" button, it just does it. No questions asked.

Actually... none of your moderations recently have fallen under the "offensive" subject line, more trolling and disruptive posting. The TOU (which you agreed to when you joined this site) define those things pretty clearly. And no, we read every report that comes through the queue. Every single one.

Also, the "post in question" IS shown to the person being moderated... you see it before you hit that nice little reply button. :)

Then is there a way to see these "disruptive posts" Seems like every day I get one of these, almost as though the mods are just scrolling through dead threads and moderating just for the fun of it.

as I said I think i may have posted once yesterday...if at all. and popped in just to browse the forums and, of course, my daily moderation for disruptive or offensive posting was in there.

Yes, they can be seen in your moderation history. It's on your profile in the left hand menu, at the bottom I believe.

Why would I reply to a PM saying I got modded? I just take it and figure, meh, some tool reported me for nothing again. So if I reply to this PM, regardless of whether or not I send the message I will be able to see the post in question?

The PMs are sent automatically by the computer when you get moderated, so replying to them does nothing--you aren't replying to anyone. You can see your post that was moderated in your mod history, like I said.

Maybe you should watch what you say sometimes. Whenever I post I don't tend to get moderated, and if I do then I usually know why.

That's what the left side of my posting history page looks like. Need to be more specific as to where I can see these posts. Although from the light reading I did in ask the mods it seems as though we'll always be wrong about moderations anyways...I did see a few that were obviously meant for bans, of course those people will always be in there.

Don't troll as much then. I don't get moderated very often (any more), but I still manage to post what I'm thinking. Calm it down a bit. For your moderation history, go to the Forums page, and on the 'report card' thing in the top-right corner, it says "My Inbox | My Posting History | | My Moderation History"

 Read the post and understand I'm not complaining about trolling. I'm comlaining about the term "offensive" as it's too easy to offend people these days.

Of course, you probably find this offensive as I infer that you can't understand simple english.

You should be able to post on here without offending anyone. Obviously, you're so incapable of doing so, that you've had to make a thread about it - which, of course, makes the whole situation that much better. I know the mods on here can be strict at times. But a bit of common sense is usually enough to curb the possibility of getting modded. As Skyline said, you agreed to the ToS when you joined. If you don't like the way offensive posts aren't allowed, you're free to join another website.

Calm down, mods don't have life in general, can you imagine a mod trying to delete your post on weekends? Sometimes it's a good thing...but mostly it's a sign of getting rejected by the opposite sex. Don't take it seriously....just chill :D

Ah mate, I'd rather not try to fight for my bloody rights on GS. It won't prove anything, just get into more trouble. This is the most.."strictest" website I have ever been to. But as you know, everyone has a different opinion for everything. We can't all agree that something is or isn't offensive.

I hear you mate, and I do get frustrated with something I find funny at the time labeled offensive - I mean, I'm ex-military, Australian, and a fan of gross-out humour, so I get pretty peeved with the lesser end of things getting deemed offensive. But at the same time, I wouldn't rail against someone whose house I was in because they ask me to stop swearing. Their house, their rules. So if the rules of this place are to refrain from that sort of behaviour, my options are abide or leave. Get mad, voice your displeasure, and move on.

You said what I want to say.

Its weird to me that people complain of the TOU when they do not have any obligation to stay here at GS.

I like the jobs the Moderators are doing...keeps the forums nice and functional

If it was nothing, then the mods would have ignored it. Chances are, (and judging from this thread) he's so used to offensive/disruptive posting, that it seems like nothing to him. As D3nny said, its not your website.

The only thing I want is to see which Mod did it to me. So if need be I can ask the mod who did the moderation straight instead of asking a random one. Not that I do that often, I don't. I also learned complaining about moderations and the rules does no good. Only worked for me once.

We're not asking you to change your opinions; we're just asking that you exercise a little respect when expressing them. There is no point to which people become more receptive if you tell them that they "fail" and are "dumb". On the contrary, behavior like that tends to have the pronounced effect of ensuring that no one you talk to will actually take what you say into serious consideration.

All we ask from our users is a little restraint and amicability. If that's too much to ask, then there's not much more to say.

Is it okay to slap people?

Recently, I slapped two TCs. It was a joke, but could be construed as offensive.

example:

We have a Young Turk here, watch this space  I pretty much agree with your basic statement, TC. If someone gets offended they should just take it on the chin or cry in a hole somewhere. But this ain't RL anyway, I don't come here with the intent of insulting people, but if you dislike someone's post there are ways to get your point across that are better, e.g. pointing out their contradictions or supplying evidence to undermine their point. The problem is that some people treat arguements like a competition with "sides" and "winners", that sets diplomacy back 1000 years right off the bat.

Considering the sort of stuff on the internet the offensive section needs to stay. All it needs is clarifying so less is up to interpretation, then you know where you stand and can decide to stay or leave based on that information. I know the TOS ain't easy to change but perhaps the mods could make up a guide to understanding the offensive section in a sticky rules thread, still following the TOS but just explaaining what you exactly mean by the terms.

The only change that need be made is the loose interpretation of posts that are allowed. IE intending to annoy. Anyone can get offended over any little comment. Doesn't mean it should be a moderation. And if the moderator has to decide intent then I think it should be no actioned.

Most of the moderation done on this site is pretty subjective. But, we're human, so basicly there is nothing we can do about this. People will always make personal choices when making conclusions on what is or is not acceptable. This is one of the reasons I find being human so intollerable.

Eh, no. :? For a start, the ToU uses the word offensive in its definition of offensive.

And it's not by any means defined clearly. What constitutes 'graphic'? It's subjective. There's no absolute, well-defined borderline for the word. In the end it comes down to the sensibilities of the person reading it.

I think she meant the definition of disruptive posting and trolling which i seem to remember are explained quite well.

Again, only if you're an ass about it. I've been in a ton of religious threads--made a few--and while I have been moderated a few times, it was never for "just arguing the TC's point" or saying I'm right.

I totally agree with Llama that definitions are too vague and cause excess moderations due to discrepencies in what the ToU say and what the actual moderator's interpretation is. I will say to the TC that there has been and I think continues to be an on-going discussion about this, although I don't think there's any forseeable change in the immediate future. I also will say to th TC that you're not going about things in a manner that tends to get you anywhere and I'm pretty surprised the mods haven't locked this thread, sent you to ATM, and/or deleted some of your posts. You'd be surprised how far basic courtesy and respect gets you in talking with people, especially mods, and just coming out in a self-righteous and antagonistic manner is not going to get you anywhere with them.

Yeah I get point loss all the time because I "So Called" offended someone. I don't think of it as that because I enver mean to offend anyone. I don't know but sometimes this site is a bit too strict if you ask me.

[QUOTE="Brainkiller05"]I try my hardest to avoid religious threads but I always get sucked it, just debating the TC's point is enough to get you moderated a lot of the time :|Theokhoth

Again, only if you're an ass about it. I've been in a ton of religious threads--made a few--and while I have been moderated a few times, it was never for "just arguing the TC's point" or saying I'm right.

Well I guess there's different ways of going about it, though the one I'm thinking of (was actually a valid point) I compared religion to fairy tales and I got moderated for being offensive, though if someone makes a topic saying "I believe in God and this is why..." ANY post which debates him and says God doesn't exist is going to be offensive to him.

To a religious moderator it'd be considered offensive = moderated.

To an athiest moderator it'd be common sense = not moderated.

I've wondered if the mods religious beliefs or lack of would affect moderation (or non modertation) in religious topics.

I agree about how everything can be offensive to someone.

I find religious debate to be impossible. Too scared to get modded so I just avoid those topics now.

Theokhoth

That's probably wise given that you can now be modded for claiming that you're right on a matter of religion. >_>

Only if you're an ass about it.

Several CWU topics have been locked simply because in the OP Crush claimed that he was right, and he's not an ass about it in his OPs.

They've been locked because they're nothing but evangelism topics.

That wasn't the reason given by the mods, and subsequent CWU threads which haven't been locked have been careful to add a 'but others have different opinions etc.' disclaimer but still explicitly announced in the OP that they're evangelism topics.
