It's all in how you word things...and no their beliefs don't seem to be a determining cause.I've wondered if the mods religious beliefs or lack of would affect moderation (or non modertation) in religious topics.

Nah, the only thing that needs to happen is the ToU needs an overhaul in which none of the rules are left open to moderator discretion... because what is "offensive" to one person won't be offensive to another. So its like convicting criminals based on a judges personal morals instead of the state's law. Its really stupid and only getting worse.
[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]It's all in how you word things...and no their beliefs don't seem to be a determining cause.I think they may sometimes be given that what you find offensive is influenced by your personal beliefs.Well it's more in reference to modding merely because they believe differently than the one they mod. I don't believe that is true. You know how many religious debates I've been in? My estimate of the moderation crew would be that more are nonreligious than religious. Not one of my opinions has been modded. Not one.[QUOTE="FamiBox"]

Oddly enough i almost never get modded. And i can be downright insulting to people. Then again i insult the people who are rude to others and make them look like they have the intelligence of a animal cracker but that besides the point. My posts at those times are very offensive and i dont ever get modded. It seems if your point is justified or you take care of a rude or offensive person yourself they wont mod you at all.
As for the religion topics i dont get modded there either.
You all are right though and since so many people are mentioning sticky threads with the TOU and some light moderation of it, it should be done.I kinda figured they would get the point by now.

How bout being insulting to someone who insulted someone else?
And since no one reports me for it, then i guess i shut them up pretty good.Otherise i would of been reported alot of times by now.

Well, you know some people take those "no snitching" rules pretty serious *insert gang sign hither* Seriously though, some people just don't get offended all that easily, or they would rather try to argue back rather than report. Tbh, moderations depend more so on the context and personality of the user rather than what is actually said.No that means no one reported you. Eh, crap. I meant to say that you don't have a reputation among the mods as a user who doesn't abide the ToU, then I decided to simplify it to 'you have a reputation among the mods as a user who abides the ToU', and evidently I didn't finish the job. :PAnyway, most of the modded posts haven't been due to me getting pissed off; they're due to me simply not thinking that the post would be in danger of getting modded. After all, I have no way of anticipating whether the mod who sees it will have a gut feeling that I'm trolling.

Tbh, moderations depend more so on the context and personality of the user rather than what is actually said.Yeah, and it's the people who don't report who get modded, and then when they go to ask the mods to get an explanation as to why they get modded for responding to someone who insulted them that they get scolded fornot reporting. I don't abide by any, "no snitching," rule, I just think that if it is possible to respond intelligently then that should be preferable to reporting, that and I have a pretty thick skin so unless they're making some kind of slur I just brush it off and keep going with the discussion. But apparantly that's a less acceptable practice than posting flamebait and then reporting someone when they respond.

A petition won't change anything. The way things are run here are and will continue to be flawed, at best.
yea i just got banned for "overly graphic" which i thought was funny
and now i see a thread about a guy customizes himself with nail clippers if the mods wanna be fair everyone in that thread should be banned only to be fair across the board :I

Banned or suspened? You don't want to get the two mixed up. The mods act first and ask questions later, so you could be permanently banned for saying you have been banned in the past.

A long time ago I was modded for something that I said that could of offended someone. Well, in that same topic I told the moderator that what he also said in his post could of possibly offended me. Well, he just re-worded what he said and that was it. We dont get that pleasure, we just get straight up modded or suspended. I think they use their personal opinions too much on what should and shouldn't be modded. They all need to be on the same page. Another subject, was my previous sig which I had for a long time was a gif. jessica alba was removed by one mod who apparently though it was too sexually explicit. So now I have a pic of ben stiller. Figure if its a guy in my sig no one will think its too sexual, even though he is lookin pretty sexy as zoolander.

QFT... if you don't like the way the Gamespot forums are moderated, you've just got to respect the house rules. I don't like the way they're moderated, which is why I, personally, have been spending less time here than I used to.
That being said, I just wish they'd hand out less "Trolling" mods. If you post anything in the Wii Forums apart from "NINTENDO IS TEH GENIOUS!!1!" then you're going to get moderated for "Trolling" regardless of whether or not you own a Wii and several games, as I do.
How do you define hate speech?Hating on a group of course. I don't think anyone believe white supermicists don't have issues with groups of people now do they?I don't like to defend white supremacists, but all the same, I don't think it necessarily implies hating non-whites. Also I hate plenty of people - murderers, racists, paedophiles, etc. - but I'm not going to get modded for saying this.[QUOTE="Funky_Llama"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]Er I think it has to do with hate speech...

Refrain from using inappropriate language, including language that may look, sound like, stand for, hint at, abbreviate, or insinuate profanity, hate speech (including but not limited to racial, ethnic, or religious slurs), illegal drugs/controlled substances or illegal activities. Gamespot TOUSo basically, if you're a racist/white supremacist you are not allowed to state your opinions on race openly on Gamespot. It's been in the TOU for a very long time now, and when we signed up, we all agreed to follow that TOU. Anyone who doesn't like it, is free to go to another gaming site. And I of course apologize if that offends anyone. :P
Out of curiosity, does anyone who's saying "it should be re-written so it's not up to moderator discretion one bit" have a version of the ToU they would like to propose that would accomplish that but which would still account for all of the things that the bigwigs at CBS would like to keep off of their forums?
American laws don't leave anything up to interpretation - and that's why bills are thousands upon thousands of pages long and are not read by anyone, ever. If we were to define "trolling" such that there was nothing left up to interpretation, then the Terms of Use would basically be like your standard end-user license agreement (more pages than people who've actually read it), and rather than claiming "moderator discretion" as the reason why they felt their moderation was invalid, they'd instead invoke the defense that the Terms of Use is so long that nobody can realistically be expected to read it.
