it'll never happen. the good people of /b/ will crush this treaty like a bug if it ever has a chance to threaten their hang-out.

Are you serious? Those people have no power. They are nothing but thugs on the internet.

Hackers will always prevail when the time comes....:P

Considering the serious among them have gotten radio shows off the air, pedo's and animal killers to justice, and managed to get into a vice-presidential candidates email, I'd put money on them being a pretty solid oposition.

If this comes into effect in the US I will fly all the way over to DC and storm the white house, the house of reps, and senate and hunt down all responsible for letting this BS legislation pass.

They better ban and outlaw firearms to people before they pass this because I am pretty sure, I would hope, that if it does, Gun and ammo sales will go up. Its about time we have another revolution.

Are you kidding me? The second this thing is actually passed and the government try to start this thing is the moment free speech dies.

Hopefully those old white politics die already D:

Why do I somehow feel this will mean very little in the long run and nothing will change very much? Maybe that has something to do with the fact I've seen this kind of stuff again and again and again. Yet nothing ever seems to change dramatically.

Not to mention the successes they've been having with Project Greenwave. They've managed to shut down or at least crash sites run by the Iranian government that show pictures of protestors in an effort to identify and hunt them down.

I'd wager the individual countries to follow any joint agreement as well as they have followed other agreements in the past, which is to say, barely at all.

I was waiting for someone to say this. The key here is enforcement. If any of you know anything about law, it is the enforcement of laws, agreements, and rulings that makes the difference. There are probably hundreds of thousands of laws in this world, in every country big or small, that are on the books, but aren't enforced, either out of a lack of feasibility or just a general rejection of what is written down. It's even worse for international agreements, which are at best very ineffective. That is why I am hardly surprised there is still so much strife on the international level, when nearly every country is a member of the United Nations. Every country is going to do whatever they want or can. We can see with all of this Iran nuclear program business how difficult it is just to negotiate with one country and solve a potentially dangerous international conflict through purely negotiation and economic threats. Why do you think something of this magnitude is going to come anywhere close to being enforced as it was intended?

Not gonna´ happen, atleast not in any effectively uniform way. Too difficult to enforce, if not borderline impossible. Blast it with piss tbh.

This international policies will strict most users from the world to access the internet. By the way, if this policy that is full of crap is accepted in my country, sure 100000000% I wont allowed!!!!!! The biggest impact will be the biggest riots that invaded all over the world and they want to get the rights back to access the internet without silly acts and policies. The internet is OUR MINE, NOT THEIRS! So, they don't have their rights to stop us from accessing the internet.

The problem is, once a government's signed onto this treaty, they have the legal right to selectively enforce it. It's not too hard to imagine them using the law to quell speech which they deem to be a threat. Further, international treaties supercede domestic laws. Even if your government doesn't strictly enforce the legislation in the treaty, a foreign corporation has the legal right to step in and sue you right into the poorhouse. A simple look into what Monsanto has done to farmers in Canada and Mexico under the guise of NAFTA regulations is all the cautionary tale you need.

Don't think for a second that this is about "copyright protection". This is about controlling people's thoughts by axing the only free major form of media. Without the internet we are all seriously vulnerable. If this happened I would certainly protest. In the mean time we all should do whatever in our power to make sure this doesn't ever happen. This is the realization of what started in 2001 when half the world started revving up the engines of the police state, suprised it took this long.

The government can already do that, and has been doing that for a long, long time. If anything we should be glad that they're switching to a Windows based setup.
