I will try to not make this a generic relationship thread. What do you personally think about age gaps? What is your limit? Age gaps seem to mean more when you are in your teens and less when you get older. I also notice that in a lot of relationships, but guy is older than the woman. I don't know about my limits since I havent actually had a relationship yet.

I generally believe that if one of the people in the relationship is under, say 22, the age gap DEFINITELY should not exceed more than 2-4 years.

Once you're both over 22 though idgaf. Personally I would happily go out with a man 20 years my senior. I dislike going out with guys younger than me but that's just a personal preference.

Seeing youngish girls with older guys and vice versa doesn't wig me out at all.

Also nice to see you around TC.

Personally, I think age gaps are okay as long as the younger person is mature enough to be in a relationship. A 60-year-old and an 18-year-old is totally fine in my books. However, a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old is wrong on many levels. I have known of some people who did that and they were every bit as disgusting and stupid. How immature are you to be on the same level as someone that young? I know some smart people who were mature for their age when they were 12 but admitted they were still stupid as they had no life experience.

And although a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old is a leagl combination in England, it's still wrong, let alone socially unacceptable.

Cheers good sir:P I knew a girl in high school who dated an 18 year old when she was 14, and that did kind of creep me out. However I am 20 and have noticed a 30 year old seems to be expressing interest in me, but I'm not sure if that is too large of an age gap. I never approach situations with women expecting anything. I just think of it as hanging out with someone I get along with. If something happens, I wouldn't complain but it's not my main priority.

I use to say I wouldn't date anyone more than 4 years younger or older than me. Then I hooked up with this woman who is 9 years older than me. We're still together after 6 years and married now. The age difference has pretty much been a non-issue in our relationship.

Any time Madam :P Yeah basically any sort of relationship involving teens who aren't going out with people in the same year as them or whatever freaks me out completely. I knew a chap who at 24 still went after 16 year olds, the pervert, I seriously don't understand that on any level if only because most 16 year olds I know are as annoying as f***. But in this situation if the older woman has her eye on you then give it a go for a while! She's probably way more open-minded and willing to experiment in certain areas than a 20 year old in all honesty. I wouldn't go in it for the long term though because at any minute she'll want babies and things and at your age that might not be something you'd be willing to get into.

I don't generally care about age in relationships. As long as she's attractive, not a child, and has a good deal in common with me, I'm fine.

age gaps can be detrimental to a relationship for sure. People have to be in the same stage of life to really have a good chance imo. what could a 20 year old and a 40/50 year old have in common? even 5 years apart can cause issues.

Any 16-year-old is still limited in life experience so they will never really be mature enough to date someone much older, regardless of their intelligence. This only leaves one thing: a 20-year-old who's too immature to date anyone their age so goes for dating 16's because they're impressionable. I have NEVER heard of a healthy relationship bewteen anyone of this age.

I can only come to the conclusion that the 20-year-old in such a situation is utterly pathetic and not that their relationship is "special" in any way.

Personally, if it's within a reasonable number. Double digits is certainly pushing it. However, my lady and I are only 2 months apart... so my view may be narrow.

my grandparents had a 22 year age gap and were together for 60 years.

good thing too because my grandfather lived to be 106.

he needed to have someone that much younger so he didn't outlive her by 20 years.

I see no moral dilemma. I was in a *very* similar situation as you once. When I was 25, this ridiculously hot 17-year-old girl kept hitting on me and wouldn't take no for an answer. The key difference of course being that one crucial year that makes it go from "Lucky you!", to "Why don't you have a seat over there?" To make a long story short and vague, let's just say we still spent some quality time together while remaining within the confines of the law. Technically.

I've recently gone back to school and from all observations and interactions: despite what the may think or claim, most 20 year olds really arn't much more mature than 16 year olds.

What do I think? I don't see why it should bother anyone. I always see comments such as "Oh there should only be 3-4 years difference" and it really annoys me. Age means nothing, if the two people involved get on, have things in common and generally like eachother then who cares what the difference is? Obviously it needs to be legal, but I couldn't care less if a 16 year old (legal here in the UK) was going out with a 40 year old.

See this is exactly what I mean, why in gods name should two people "definitely" not be together just because of a 2-4 year difference..it makes no sense.

Okay, so that's an exception and I'll correct part of my post to say "I rarely hear of a healthy relation between anyone of this age." Because your case is almost isolated. My personal experience just says something completely different so I still stand by what I said.

You know the great thing about anecdotal evidence? It can always be crushed by someone else's anecdotal evidence. Especially when you use your anecdotal evident to make blanket statements.

half your age plus 7 is the general rule for how young you can go, but i know a girl going nout with a guy twice her age, yes they are "in love" but its kinda dumb. Guess you cant help who you fall for.

You're right, and I blundered. I still think what I said applies in most cases and I will still make pre-judgements based on it, but I could have given myself more credit if I didn't make a blanket statement.

Gotta admit that that rankles me slightly, not for any real reason, other than it's just a bit strange. I mean 7 years ago you were 20, actively engaging in a lot of interests and such, and meanwhile she was only 11 years old. There are a lot of things I value when in a relationship with someone which is along the lines of sharing memories of certain events or old TV shows/bands whatever. I realise that if you were 47 and she were 28 that lack of a similar time-line would still be there, but I just think someone aged 28 will have established their tastes and interests etc and generally know who they 'are', whereas an 18 year old's horizons are usually limited and somewhat self-centred. The fact of the matter is that people - especially girls - have another maturing 'brain growth spurt' somewhere between 20 - 25 usually and personally I wouldn't consider anyone younger than 20 to have any real idea of who they are or what they want. Being in a relationship with an 18 year old seems like hard work to me. But I'm not one for stopping happiness or whatever, if it's working for you and since she's legal, rock on I guess. I'd put money on her saying something like 'IF YOU LOVED ME YOU'D KNOW!' at some point though.

Yes, and I also said that people at the age of 16 generally aren't mature enough. I won't make a blanket statement and I'll say that it's not like that in all cases as I already got shot down for this. My other point was that it's not the 16-year-old who's pathetic, it's the 20-year-old. In the vast majority of these relationships, it is the 20-year-old taking advantage of the 16-year-old because they're too pathetic to date anyone their own age. For this reason, I can't shake it off just because they are a few exceptions.

In my last relationship, I was older by three years and nineteen days. It lasted a good eleven months. She was 18 and I was 21.

[QUOTE="Spitfirer"]And although a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old is a leagl combination in England, it's still wrong, let alone socially unacceptable.

Spitfirer

You're contradicting yourself just slightly, you say it's okay as long as the younger person is mature enough yet you think being with a 20 year old is somehow wrong.

Their own age? It's only 4 years difference, why should he give up a person he likes just because of the few people who would frown upon their relationship?

As long as we're talking about adults I don't see an issue. My last two GF's were both around 9 years younger than me, I'm 33, they were 24. I was even 5 years older than my exwife.

Well it's a MASSIVE maturity gap from 16 to 18.

Always stick to the formula:

Age of Yonger >= Age of Older / 2 + 7

I have a history of dating girls older then me because younger girls seem...immature to me...So this problem does not apply to me...

That's subjective.

MissLibrarian

This im 27 even low I look a lot younger when i was 18 it was 2 years either way baring a few incidents, now if im happy with some one and have a lot in common age don't really come into it as much .

But perception is also based on a person's mental capacity.

Ag = (T - 18 ) Agegap is equal to my age(T) less 18 years, this formula only works once a person reaches adulthood. when im old i might be mating with someone ancient or 18.

If one person is a minor, the other person better not be more than 2 years ahead of them. Other than that, have at 'er I guess. Relationships between two adults are fine at whatever age. It's a little gross when it's a 20 year old woman and an 80 year old man, but regardless, they're adults.

Though the "age of consent" is 16 here, I wouldn't date anyone under 18. I need someone I can go to the bar with. Anything more than maybe 3 years or so seems like too much of a difference.
