Found this article about all this Airbender racism controversy while browsing Google News.
Personally I find all this controversy stupid. It is a Hollywood movie after all, you should expect a big chunk of the main actors to be white.

good old affirmative actionUnknownmuncherWhat? The problem is with the number of white actors and last time I checked that wasn't "good old affirmative action"...
[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]This is what I've been saying the whole time. :lol:scorch-62Wait, what? The whole racism issue with this movie. I always point out the fact that only a small chunk of the cast is white--only two characters, in fact--yet nobody seems to listen.
You can prove they were the same people?I find it strange that people get angry at the people complaining in this situation, yet also get angry when there was the potential for a black actor to play Spiderman.

Thats different. In the series there is no definite race it was all up to speculation. It's clear who peter parker is. I have to tell you as a black man myself I prefer my white super heroes white. There are plenty of cool black super heroes they could have that guy play. On topic most of the complainers about the last air bender seems to believe light skin = white.I find it strange that people get angry at the people complaining in this situation, yet also get angry when there was the potential for a black actor to play Spiderman.

no its the same thing, people dont want mythos of something they are passionate about to get warped. Most black people who are spiderman fans wouldnt feel too great about about a black spiderman, and as an Avatar LAB fan making aang, katara and sokka white is kinda annoying...because they are not supposed to beI find it strange that people get angry at the people complaining in this situation, yet also get angry when there was the potential for a black actor to play Spiderman.

Who the hell gives a flying **** about the race of actors in whatever movie this is? O_O
I swear to God, race gets more ****ing annoying with each passing day.

That would be true if the majority were complaining that the main character was white because of the fact he wasn't in the cartoon for the sake of accuracy. However from what i've seen, the vast majority are blaming racism and hidden agenda's that created an "entirely white cast" even though there is only what 3 white characters? It's silly.

There are no real world races in Avatar.[QUOTE="SgtKevali"]

Where were these people when Gerard Butler was cast as King Leonidas, despite the fact that he doesn't look Greek in the slightest? Where were these people when, in Steven Spielberg's The Terminal, the janitor character named Gupta -- a north Indian name -- claims to be from Chennai -- a south Indian city. Where were these people? Nowhere. Because they only get angry about things that are convenient for them, things that don't require a lot of thought, such as "hey, the people in this cartoon are yellowish, but the people in the movie are white"! Any goddamn three year old can make that basic observation.
[QUOTE="funsohng"]I wouldn't say it's racism (I mean, the director is a freaking Asian himself), but I do believe the abundance of white people in a movie based on Asian mythology is quite absurd. or I think Avatar WAS based on Asian Mythology. It is, right?TheokhothThere are TWO WHITE CHARACTERS. Two. It's not an "abundance."
Avatar had a lot of Asian themes and influences, but the story itself has nothing to do with Asian mythology.

Well the big difference would be that Spider-Man is an iconic figure that has been around almost 50 years and is very familar to people all around the world from all walks of life. Whereas Avatar - The Last Airbender has only been around 5 years which mainly has a core following and not only has it adapted its own mythology and world setting, but it's a cartoon that has adapted an anime style which tends to make race somewhat ambiguous. Much like Speed Racer (who is supposed to be Japanese) most people lightly viewing the show are likely to be unaware as to anyone's particular race.
But really the main difference comes down to the fact that Spider-Man, like Batman and Superman, he is a hugely iconic figure so changing his race is a pretty big deal that a lot of people may be put off by, whereas lesser characters such as when they made Kingpin black in Daredevil just because they felt they had a good actor that fit the role despite his race, people really didn't have an issues with that -- the actual movie he was in was the only objectional thing. >_>
