I think the most depressing part of this whole debacle is the fact that those claiming racism are basically saying that the singular most important part of each character in the anime is their race.

Which is probably the most racist thing anyone here has actually done.

GabuEx

Then, using the comparison from before, are those who don't want a black Peter Parker also stating that the most important part of his character is his race? No one is stating that at all, and I don't know how you came to that conclusion. People just want the characters to have accuracy to the show. And personally I don't find it racist, I just wish the film was more accurate.

I agree it is pretty stupid. Anime (and anime like animation, Avatar) tends to have a neutral ethnicity.

Heck, look at Naruto. It is in a Japanese setting, but the main character has blond hair and blue eyes.

Well, obviously Shyamalan does not particularly care about that particular aspect of the show, and obviously neither would someone who cast a black person to play Peter Parker. Nor have many other people cared about accuracy to their source material - Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are not exactly faithful to Batman in its original form.

If someone disliked a black Peter Parker, would he claim that the person who cast a black person into that role was racist? I highly doubt it. Complaining about a lack of accuracy is one thing; levelling the accusation of racism as an explanation for that lack of accuracy is entirely another thing.

Then the use of Traditional Chinese throughout the show, admitted by the creators, and other very obvious Chinese cultural aspects are not meant to convey they are Chinese?

[QUOTE="Deihjan"] X-men Origins killed Deadpool tocool340

At least they didn't kill gambit. I would have been absolutely PISSED if they killed him...

They didn't give him his french accent. The rest about him my mind blocked automatically. And to all those who say that Atla is Chinese, get it right. The bending types are inspired by martial arts from Asia, the clothes, the nations and the people in the nations are inspired by mostly asian cultures. Look at a map from Atla with the four nations represented, and look at an old nautical map of the world. Place the four nations where they would be on a real life map, and bam, there's where you need to get actors from(or nearby, because no one lives on the south or north pole..)

I was talking about the Fire Nation specifically and the use of Indian-American actors to represent them, instead of East Asian actors. That was my main qualm with the casting.

Do these people complaining about racism even realize that the director isn't white? :?JML897
People complained about the latest Star Wars having too many Mexicans... The guy is from New Zealand and is a Maori. Most people who shout "RACIST RACIST!" are the people who ARE racist. Whereas most of us see a person, they see black person, white person, and then count... omg...there's 3 white people and 1 black person in that scene... RACIST!!!!

They aren't baselessat least from where I come from.I won't go into why, that's a sure fire moderation and possibly ban.

Casting actors does not equal to racism....

I am not saying it's racism however I'm just going to say I'm not surprised the main cast is mostly white even though the characters from source material aren't.

The director being a minority, is not a excuse.. The directors arn't the ends all of who plays what role those are the producers and executive producers.. Furthermore can you really blame them? People are going to use familiar actors that they know, this automatically means that whites and blacks predominately will be chosen.. The only thing people should be complaining about is why havn't countries like Japan made a movement like Hollywood in being able to rival it in overall cinema.. India has been trying to do this for years already with their own version of Hollywood.

A lot of the time when this sort of stuff happens, the people have bare minimum info they got through hearsay. When Christians were protesting Dogma, the director, Kevin Smith, participated in the protest against his own film and no-one was the wiser.

US animation can be good, for all the complaining people due about Disney their animation if freaking awesome. Heck, from what I have seen of it Avatar the last air bender seems to have great are (missed the show as I was never into Nick toons, I ******** hate Sponge Bob). Its just US TV animation has gotten bad. Family Guy and its spin offs, south park, and adult swims comedy shows (metalocaplist and Aqua Team) art styl e is just awful.

I miss the good old days of US animation. You know 90's golden era Disney, peak Simpsons, and King of the Hill.:(

I don't see any issues with the movie. I think he did a great job explaining his stance, so to still complain and claim racism is futile at this point.

Whether the characters are Asian or not, Asians don't really have a lot of starring role potential in Hollywood except for those who have spent decades making a name for themselves in Asia.

The main difference now and back then with Disney is they don't draw it by hand 100%, so sad D: The art in most western shows are either heavily influenced by generic anime/manga art, and it makes me a bit sad to see giant eyes in western cartoons. Sure, some shows, like Avatar, pulls it off great. I recommend watching it, because it's well made and funny. If only it was slightly more adult, it'd been even better :3

Lol, yeah, it's a bit of a pressure xD And I said the same thing to myself with The Golden Compass "You're going to watch it, because you're a big fan of the books. Who knows, they might just do it right". We shall see, we shall see. I might change my view on the Atla movie when it's finished.

I never watch the show and I don't know specifics, but in general most adaptations from books/animations/video games to movies are done with a certain degree of "untruthfulness". Directors want to put in their own stroke, actors want to portrait the characters they play in a certain way, scripts are somewhat improvise and we have an end product that doesn't quite capture the true spirit of the original work.

But all these fuss about M. Night being a racist should still be good for the movie itself, some people might feel compel to see it simply because of the bad (or good) press it received. Not saying M. Night is in this case, but even if he did try to cast more Caucasians in the movie than necessary I still wouldn't blame the guy. He has to maximize the movie commercial appeal and one way to do it is to build a cast that many consider mainstream society, he needs to make darn sure people will line up to see his movie. He wouldn't be a director if he cannot even accomplish that, no movie studio will hire a guy that couldn't sell tickets
